Re: [PeoplewithPVCs] Laurie

Hi Laurie, I take it you are a nurse! Sorry to see you have had a crappy
weekend. I noticed in your post you mentioned it could be after years of
tacycardia thats brought on these latest symptoms. I also have tacycardia but
my cardio at the hospital says its very rare he treats patients with
medications only if the tacy is troublesome! what's your views on this?
meds/no meds?
Leanne.

    Leanne,

I have had tachycardia for years. Without meds, my heart rate runs in the 130s when I am doing absolutely nothing. I also had high blood pressure for 13 years. So I have been on beta-blockers for many years. I don't have any problem taking what my doc prescribes. I trust him implicitly. You really only need medication for tachycardia if it is symptomatic, which mine is. This past weekend, even on the Toprol, it just went totally out of control, causing the fluid accumulation in the lungs, the shortness of breath, and the swelling in the legs. I also have another problem called left ventricular hypertrophy, caused by the years of high BP. This simply means that the left ventricle of the heart, which is the one that pumps the freshly oxygenated out to your body and brain, gets overgrown, which makes it weaker than normal and can't pump as efficiently, also contributing to the symptoms. And yes, I am a nurse, an RN. I used to work in an ICU/CCU, but am now a
supervisor in a nursing home. My experience in the CCU gave me a lot of knowledge about the heart, but sometimes it's just very scary to know too much!! Hope I answered your questions. Laurie

hi Laurie, I am sorry to see you are going through this bad time and as a
nurse it must be pretty scary knowing what's happening, sometimes I feel a
little knowledge is a pretty scary thing, but they do say better to be
prepared I am sure everything will go well with you and at least you are
getting it all sorted out. It worries me too that I like yourself have had
v-tach for 4 years and this is a possibility that could happen to me too so I
watch your progress with great interest. The SVT what does this mean? I really
did not know there was so many different medical names for things that go
wrong with the heart I just presumed that PVCs and v-tach etc. were all the
    same!
    Take care, Leanne.

    Leanne,

I want to try and clear up some misunderstandings for you. First of all, V-tach and SVT are not the same thing. (I have a history of both, but the v-tach only happened once to me as a side effect of some asthma meds). V-tach is a run of pvcs with no regular beat between them. It starts and stops by itself. SVT is supraventricular tachycardia, which simply means that the fast heart rate arises from an impulse in the atrium (upper chamber of the heart), rather than the ventricle (as in v-tach). This new problem that I have, the heart failure, is not caused by either of them, but simply from years of high blood pressure and a fast heart rate. Without meds to control my heart rate, it runs in the 130s just resting. It makes your heart work too hard. Episodes of svt come on suddenly and end suddenly, and can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

In your email to Christine, you mentioned that you thought you were symptomatic with the v-tach because you can feel the irregular beats. That does not mean you are symptomatic. Symptomatic means you get bad effects from the irregularity, like shortness of breath, dizzy, lightheaded, nauseaus, etc. I hope I have helped you to understand all this a little better. I know, it is very confusing. I will keep you posted with updates as I get them. I have to go to my primary doctor tomorrow. I am hoping he will let me go back to work!! Will keep you posted. Take care. Laurie

Hi Laurie, Many thanks for clearing up my very confused questions on v-tach!
I think I will keep your post somewhere I can reach it just incase I forget
    and start rambling! LOL
Take care of yourself and please keep me updated with your news also.
    Leanne.

It comes and goes. Right now I feel ok. Drained but ok. I can not
remember if I said but I went to the dentist on Halloween and I was supposed
to take antibiotics before but forgot to get any. They still cleaned my
teeth just not under the gums but I got a real bad stabbing pain in my left
ear and then my throat hurt and now my gums are swollen. So, I called the
cardio and told them I made a boo-boo and he has me on antibiotics and I
,also, go back Monday for the Holter Monitior again. We will see. Thanks
    for asking.

Hi Laurie, Before I start to "ramble" I hope you are well and that things may
    be a little calmer!
You helped me greatly with my question the other day regarding what does
    symptomatic mean.
So, the way I see it is I must be symptomatic because I get what you
say:-Lightheadedness, dizzy, confused, etc. Is this what you mean?
    Take care laurie.
    Leanne.

    Hi Leanne,

I'm glad to know I helped you understand this stuff a little better. Yes, if you are feeling lightheaded, dizzy, etc with the pvcs then you are symptomatic. That is what it means. As for me, I am doing okay these days. I am not able to work for a couple more weeks at least, so just staying home relaxing and catching up on some needlework. I try not to think too much about all the testing that's coming up. Just taking it one day at a time right now. Group----I really appreciate all of the good thoughts and prayers that you have all sent my way. You are a wonderful bunch of supportive people and I don't know what I would do without you!! Will keep you all updated. Thanks!! Love, Laurie

    Hi Laurie,

Glad you're doing ok. Get yourself hooked on Court TV and your troubles will seem so trivial. While I'm looking for a job and doing housework, I've been watching these trials and they're so fascinating. Anyway, hang in there and you're still on my prayer list until you tell us you're doing terrific!!

    Love,

    Suzy

Thanks Suzy! I will do that. I love the shows on TLC and Discovery about Justice Files and The New Detectives, so Court TV is right up my alley!! Love, Laurie

    Hi Sharon,

I had that test done yesterday. Will hopefully get the results today. Thanks for the info. Laurie

    Sharon Penner <tspkell@...

    Laurie,
I just read your post about your primary doc thinking you might be a diabetic. There is a test that they can do that shows your average blood sugar over the last three months. It is a blood test.....another needle....but a very worthwhile test. Mine showed my blood sugar average for the three months to be 104 which showed I was not a diabetic. You might mention this test to your doctor. Good luck...

    Leanne,
Where do you live? You always seem to be online when I am awake MUCH too
late here in Texas! Do you live overseas? Surely no one else is
continuously awake at 1:00am like I am!!!!

    Hi Leanne,

I am doing fine right now. Remember, "No news is good news"!! Just waiting for more tests and dr appointments. Will let you know how they go. Thanks for asking! Laurie

Hi Laurie, I see from your post you are having Ablation done. Just think
after this you may well wonder what you ever worried about! you will be your
old self, have bags of energy, hopefully no PVC's, and be thinking happy you
had it done. I know you are worried so would I be but the result at the end
will be a positive one, a good one and well worth it.I have also been
thinking just lately of Ablation and what I would do if my cardio recommends
it, I too think I would be scared out of my head but I think YES I would have
it if it were to make me better, and I am the one who has no trust in docs or
    meds! LOL
Don't with until you have had the operation to let us know how you are
Laurie, keep in touch always we all care for you and know how you must feel.
But remember, good times are ahead you are getting "fixed"
    Love Leanne.

Hi Laurie, On the note of quivers, Its a good thing you don't get this as
well, you have enough to keep you going! so don't be greedy LOL. Just joking!
I am glad you have posted I was beginning to worry what was happening with
you. Hope things are going well.
    Love Leanne.
Ps, as you are a nurse could you explain this one? :-
I went to see my cardio yesterday for a check up type appointment and I
thought right, its question time I am sick of being fobbed off with no
    answers!
I asked out right, do I have v-tack? as my home doctor says I do. He replied
no you have ectopic beats but your other cardio did mention something about
v-tach, and something else related, I shall have to see him about that! What
kind of answer is that, I am still no wiser, am I ?
Hope you may be able to answer where no other can ! LOL
    Leanne.

  17. esmeralda_1000 on 2008-11-28 05:48:34.753014

    Hi Leanne,

Well, I am baffled. I don't think the doctor gave you a very straight answer. If that was me, I would still be wanting to know for sure if I had v-tach, as he really didn't answer the question. Now, I wonder if he really will speak to the other cardiologist and get his opinion! Let me know. Laurie

Hi Laurie, I was wondering a few days ago when your ablation was going ahead.
Now I see it's the 17th of this month. No doubt I will "speak" to you before
this but I will be thinking of you. I hope you benefit from this operation
and look forward to being well!!
    Love, Leanne.

    hi Laurie
have been thinking about you a lot over the past few days. Sorry I haven't
    had time to post.
