Susan (F.)

My advice to you is: GO FOR IT!! Life is too short for missed opportunities and regrets. It does the soul wonders to get away from the family, even for just a few days. I, myself, am leaving for a trip to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, with my best girlfriend this Sunday. We go away a couple times a year, no kids, no husbands. And you know what? They do survive without us!! As far as Ryan is concerned, I know it will be hard to leave him because he is so little yet, but it will also be very healthy for him. He will learn an important life lesson, that Mommy can go away, but she will always return to take care of him. I urge you to go!!!! Let us know what you decide. We will be there for you! Take care. Laurie

BIG DECISION!!

Susan,
Speaking as a 49 year old mother of two daughters (20 and 23), YOU MUST GO!!
I was a stay at home mom for about 18 years and lost myself along the way.
I'm not saying I wasn't a good mom (I was) and I'm not saying my kids were
spoiled (they weren't...well, ok, maybe a little<smile
I know I did myself AND my kids a disservice by not putting myself first at
least some of the time. You're thinking that you're indispensable in this
family for even a few days...you're not. Let them learn that they can
manage without you sometimes...they'll be proud of themselves and will
respect you more. Ok, end of speech.
In a nutshell, my advice would be to GO!

Mickey,
I don't mind at all...he had thyroid cancer (papillary carcinoma to be exact).
He had his entire thyroid removed and then 2 radioactive iodine treatments.
This past September he had a check up and they spotted another lump in his
thyroid region, but after some testing they believe it is scar tissue. We are
on a wait and see mode right now and hoping as always for the best. It's really
hard to sit back and trust what the Dr.'s are telling you, but sometimes you
have no other choice.

Hi Susan and Hi All,

Hi Susan and Hi All,
I made it back safely from an excellent vacation. I've spent the past day and
a half reading all of your posts.
Susan, you sound like my twin in life. My kids are 11 and 6 and I still have a
hard time leaving. I really try to weigh what I am leaving them for and whether
it is worth it. I can tell you that when my son was 2 1/2 I probably would not

Roxanne, we stayed on 24th street...so close. The weather was great and we had
a really good time.
Jackie, I don't know why my PVC's stopped. I really believe mine are
associated with the vagal nerve and specifically with bowel movements. If I
keep them moving I seem to be fine. (sorry for the way too personal info). The
day we traveled to the beach I was all out of whack and of course started with
PVC's non-stop. I had them so badly at night that I really thought about

I forget who mentioned it but I can make them happen with my posture. Raising
my left arm over my head, bending forward to swiftly, turning quickly, etc. I
only get one or two and then they're gone. Weird.
My prayers are with all of you experiencing health problems in your family.

I have signed Kathryn up for a quilting retreat the last part of September
and a choir retreat in October. She is going with a good friend of ours to
the quilting retreat (who just happens to be a cardio nurse) and I am
cooking at the choir retreat (as if that matters). It sounds to me that you
need to go. A retreat, without the pressure of family will do wonders for
you. Don't be afraid to go - remember that your family (and your Doctors)

BIG DECISION!!

2008-05-29 10:04:13

Hi everyone!
I have been having an EXTREMELY hard time making a decision. There is a 5
day/4 night retreat in mid-Sept. with an author/speaker I very much admire,
about 3 hrs away in Connecticut. I signed up in January and have come down
to the LAST minute in deciding if I am going. I have gotten to the point
where I think I can deal with any heart problems that may (or MAY NOT) come
up. The final problem is, I feel guilty leaving my 2 and 1/2 yr old son!!
My older two (9 and 11yrs), though I'd miss them, will be OK. I've been a
fulltime mom since Ryan's birth, breast fed him a long time and therefore
haven't been away from him very much. He looks for me when he's tired. hurt,
going to bed, etc.(You moms know what I mean!) My mom and husband would take
care of the kids while I was gone and Ryan has a great relationship with both
of them, but I am struggling with leaving him. A large part of me really
wants to go and thinks it would be a good move in reclaiming some of my life
back. But the other part of me feels so GUILTY! He'll be looking for me and
I won't be there! My husband is supportive of me going - it's just me!!
Ultimately I know I have to make the decision, but I thought I'd put it out
there for any thoughts/ideas!! Thanks!!

2008-05-29 06:25:49

Laurie, Home for me is southern Georgia - I still have a small farm down there (370 acres) - one of my cousins keeps 40 acres in cultivation for me (enough to pay the taxes - he has a large farm next to mine - 890 acres) - the balance of mine is in timber - some of which has not been harvested since about 1870 or so. We live in central Virginia, about 45 miles south of Richmond. Kathryn is from Virginia (Newport News) which is why we have stayed here.

Yes it is warm (Kathryn says no - it's HOT) - but I grew up in this kind of weather - working outside all the time. For me, it feels good, especially after working inside on computers all day long. Anyway, if you are not used to this type of weather, you need to stay inside. Extreme changes (just like coming in from being outside) is hard on your system. A heart that is already having problems is put under a lot of extra stress with the environment changes.

Please take care of yourself and try to stay comfortable.

Derrick,

So good to hear from you again. I am glad to hear that Kathryn is doing better, hope it continues to go well for your entire family. I just have one question for you........you said the heat in the south reminds you of home. So........where is home??? I live in upstate New York, and the humidity here at times is just unbearable. I have a hard time leaving the house (and the air conditioning!!) when it's so humid, but that is more related to my asthma and breathing problems rather than the pvcs.

God Bless. Laurie

"Young, Derrick" <youngd@...

Well folks,
She is home (for a little while) - she has been going back for more tests 2
or 3 days each week. They have finally changed the diagnosis to heart
failure. The PVCs and PACs are still there but with the other problems -
this is something that they are having to address and fix.
Kathryn has made a turn for the better. She is taking a long time to start
recovery this time around. She is still having a lot of problems with PVCs
& PACs. She has an implanted defibulator/pacemaker and it is pacing her
heart about 80% of the time. The doctors are "playing" (that is my term -
not theirs) with her meds attempting to balance everything and attempt to
get things under control - that is why I have not posted her meds list - it
is changing - daily.
I have been following the comments on the heat. Me, I love it warm (and
this is warm). Yesterday it reached 101 with humidity of 95% (plus). When
I got home, I worked outside until about 8 and then hung drywall till about
10. Kathryn is not able to handle the heat - she stays inside. Our 4 year
old is getting real good at washing dishes and helping me hang laundry - oh
well - by the way - this is Virginia - part of the sunny south - well sunny
it is - but the humidity - well it reminds me of home.
When Kathryn's meds settle down, I will send out a list. It seems that
every time a doctor looks at what she is taking, they all comment that she
is taking too many pills (don't we know that!) - anyway they attempt to cut
down and then they add something else. Hummmm....
I hope that everyone is able to deal with the heat - and more importantly
that each of you has a good, PVC free day. Take each day, one hour at a
time. Relax, take a deep breath, exhale slowly. Spend some time in prayer
and meditation. That always has a wonderful calming affect on everyone
around you.

LA Lakers Boss - PVC's?

2008-05-26 11:20:51

Non-basketball fans and non-US folks who might wonder what the hell
I'm talking about bear with me, but today on the news I heard that
Jerry West, ex-basketball star and LA Lakers boss, decided to quit
his job because of "irregular heartbeat" brought on by stress. Which
I assume to be PVC's. I guess during the playoffs last year when his
team won the championship, he was so bothered by them that he didn't
attend any of the games. Guess it just points out that regardless of
a person's wealth, celebrity status, and athletic conditioning, the
psychological effects of PVC's are just as significant. Just thought
it was an interesting story.................
On another note, after 2 months of basically no PVC's, I had a bout
of them for two days (I'm talking thousands per day), now they've
disappeared again...... All I did was eat the buffet at
"Ponderosa's" with my dad (his favorite place; non-US folks, this is
a franchise food chain here). I wonder if they dump MSG all over
their food. I wonder if that was it?

think i was taking enough so ive increased it from 300mg daily to 450mg daily
still seems a little on the light side but i thought i would do it gradually.
I think my next step is to increase to 600mg then perhaps keep at that for
two/three weeks and see if theres a difference. I dont actually take anything
else but have been wondering about the coq10 ? people say its good for the
heart muscles. Whats your views on this ?

Hi Jackie,
When I exercise (walking usually), I feel great, but on those days I
inevitably get some skips during the evening. However, my doctor DOES
recommend exercise as a good way to ward off palpitations because it rids
your body of excess adrenelin. It's just so hard to exercise here when it's
above 100 every day. If I go early in the morning, I knock myself out for
the rest of the day. (Ohmigosh, what a lame excuse THAT one was. LOL)
Suzy<----queen of lame excuses AND pill wuss

val t/banannas

2008-05-24 21:18:57

Hi,
What you said about having no palpitations whilst doing the gardening (and
therefore making your heart work harder) should reassure you a bit, don't you
think? I mean think about it - if there was anything seriously wrong with
your heart surely they'd get worse on exertion, not better? I know it's
something that has only recently occurred to me - when mine are bad, the only
way I can get a respite from them is if I exercise - I find that comforting,
strangely! I mean the damn things come back again when I sit down but it's a
break at least!
Liz
PS I'd stick with the magnesium too - I had to drop to 800mg a day , as
1000mg was giving me stomach cramps but I swear they're better - MUCH less.

Re: val t/banannas

2008-05-24 18:57:19

Hi Jackie,
You know, I have found that my palps almost always go away with
exercise, but very often, even on a virtually palp-free day, they
return at night. I've heard many others on this board say the very
same thing. According to my cardiologist, it's a good thing when
they go away during exercise. He told me that you have fewer palps
when your heart rate is up. Believe it or not, after all my testing
was done, and everything was "normal," he even encouraged me to start
running!!! No thank you - I'm sticking to my speed walking:)) My
best friend, who gets palps, but doesn't get them often, ONLY gets
them when she lays down at night. Same thing with my sister-in-law
and my mother. So..........relax (or try to) - you're in good
company. Keep on gardening and eating those bananas, girlfriend:))))

Eating bananas on a regular basis has always been a HUGE help for
my palpitations. I always keep them on hand. When my palps get
really bad, I'll have a banana and a glass of orange juice, and the
combination almost always makes them go away. As you probably know,
both orange juice and bananas are high in potassium. So glad you're
feeling better:))))

Re: Palp woes val t

2008-05-22 19:31:33

Hi Jackie!
Klonopin is just an anti-anxiety drug in the benzodiazepam group
(like Xanax, among others). It's the only drug I've ever found,
besides Xanax, that seems to really help my palpitations go away,
without any nasty side effects (remember, I'm the second pill wuss on
that board) :)) I used to take Xanax, but my ob/gyn, who prescribes
it, switched me to Klonopin because he said it was a little less
addicitive, but longer acting. I tell you what though, he still
doesn't give me a whole lot, so I make sure I only take them when I'm
going through a pretty bad spell. The only actual heart drug I ever
tried was Inderal, and my cardiologist gave me that on an "as needed"
basis too. He said if the palps were bothering me really bad and I
went to the ER, that's what they'd give me anyway, so he just gave
them to me in advance (this was after all my tests had come out fine -
over and over again). He said I didn't really need to be on it, but
it might put my mind at ease to have a "tool" to handle them myself.
It may have been in my imagination, but the Inderal sometimes seemed
to make the PVCs either worse, or different.
I was glad to read in one of your posts that your palps eased
off, and you had no problems with them while cutting your grass.
During my walks yesterday I noticed that EVERYONE here was cutting
their grass. I live on the east coast of the US, and we've had so
much rain people literally run out with their mowers whenever the sun
peaks out:))) Hope you have a wonderful, palp-free Sunday.
Luv,

In their defense, I remain hopeful that the whole concert wasn't lip
synched! I think it was just that last song, with the logistics of the other
two singers up on the second floor balconies of the Denver
(dome/whatever/venue). I think it might have been to hard for the 3 singers
timing to be together when they were so far apart, a technical challenge for
the sound guys?? or gals, I guess!

Palp woes

2008-05-21 06:17:17

Hello everyone,
Boy was I stupid today. My palpitations had eased off, and what
do you think I did? I drank THREE cups of coffee!!! Usually I drink
two and I'm fine. It would probably not have bothered me, but it's
that lovely time of the month, and I suppose that makes me more
sensitive to the caffeine. Oh well, I just took a Klonopin, so
hopefully they will ease off so that I can get to sleep. Hope the
rest of you are having a palpitation free night:)

One time I applied for a job right next to a Hostess bakery back in Chicago.
The lady who was interviewing me said that every day it smelled like a
different hostess treat...depending on what they were baking that day. They
would have a "Twinkie day"...then a "HoHo day"....etc. I think I was there
on a HoHo day 'cuz it sure smelled good.

Hi, I wondered if it was possible to have PVC's along with VT ! that is just
the symptoms that i told my cadio that i get from time to time and when you
get the quiver, boy ! it hits big time, I get PVC's every single day but the
feelings you describe ie:- the feeling of not beating but of a quivering
feeling are the ones that get to me most. All the docs seem to say is I have
eptopic beats !
How would they know, at the time of my monitor tests and ive had 4 long ones,
the quivering feeling wasn't there, but it has got worse and thats the
feeling i was trying to describe ! thanks !

Mickey, my best friend saw the Dixie Chicks in Denver last night. They
closed the show with Goodbye Earl, and "the dark haired one" was on a
platform right next to my girlfriend up in the balcony for that last song.
My friend said she felt like she was right in the spotlight too, staring at
her kneecap, as she was. It was kind of weird because she lip-synched and
air-guitared (the dixie chick, not my friend) through the song. It is a
great song, & coincidentally my girlfriend is getting divorced too!
Just thought I'd throw that in...

things in the way that you put them only until today i did not let the PVC's
rule me infact i was quite strong and always said that if they continued to
be with me then they would have to fit in with me ! and not me bending to
them ! I think i got up this morning feeling just out of it (not with the

Re: Lots of PVCs val

2008-05-17 17:07:21

Hi Jackie :))
I agree with you. I'm the same way when it comes to
my "hubbie's cure." Sometimes it takes the palps right away (if I'm
having them), and sometimes it doesn't. Only once or twice has being
together actually brought the palps on, but I can tell you that it is
scary when that happens. Probably more scary for him since he knows
that I tend to avoid anything that I think may have even a remote
chance of bringing them on! :)))
I've been reading your posts about magnesium, potassium, etc...
Back when I was first diagnosed with palps, I was a general
practioner who did some blood work on me. I don't remember the
actual numerical level of my potassium, but it was low enought that
she put me on potassium supplements. As I recall though, she didn't
keep me on them for very long, and there were all kinds of
precautions, so I definitely wouldn't take extra potassium w/o a
doctor's input. The potassium supplements didn't completely cure the
palps anyway. Then some ten years down the road, when they were
really kicking in again, and starting to affect the quality of my
life (i.e, drive me crazy!), I went to a cardiologist. Once again,
he did a complete blood work-up and EVERYTHING was fine, including my
potassium, magnesium, etc... levels. I think your best bet is to try
and eat a healthy diet and take an extra-strength mulitvitamin,
multimineral supplement. That's what I do now, and I go through long
stretches w/o PVCs (although my premenstrual time almost ALWAYS sets
them off and there seems to be not much I can do to stop that).
Frankly, though, I am like Suzy who called herself a "pill wuss." At
least I think it was Suzy:)) I am allergic to all caines - any
medication that has that word in it will literally cause me to go
immediately into cardiac arrest. I stopped breathing at the age of 4
when my dentist gave me an injection of novacaine. He didn't know
what to do, so my Mom grabbed me up and gave me mouth to mouth. She
hadn't even had any training - she just did what she's seen done on
TV shows:)) Naturally I survived, but even now they refuse to test
me even under controlled conditions because my reaction was so
severe. That is probably the root of my fear of medicine. The only
thing I take now is Klonopin, and that is only on an "as needed"
basis. Good luck with your efforts to find something that works for
you. I truly sympathize with what you are going through.

Re: [PeoplewithPVCs]ANYONE !!!!

2008-05-17 13:08:13

Hello, I have just had the results of my magnesium and potassium tests, I
feel as though the bottom of my world has dropped out, I fully expected the
tests to show low on both counts but they were fine ! so now it leaves me
thinking why the hell i am taking mag ! i feel so down ! its as though its
all for nothing. (again )
So can anyone tell me :-
Do you take mag in anycase even if mag levels are ok ?
And does it do any use to take it being as mine is ok ?
I know ive only been taking it for 1 week but i thought the longer i took it
the more chance i had in it helping my palps. So even though my levels are ok
do you think it could still help in the long run ?
I know we grasp at straws but i really DONT want to start taking drugs
again, I dont want to end up in hospital I just want to help myself in any
way i can.
So the big question is will the mag be ok to keep taking (its my last hope).
sorry for the rambling ! I dont normally do this its just I feel so down !
thanks all for listening to me i know i can be a pain in the butt at times !

RE: [PeoplewithPVCs] Anxiety, etc.

2008-05-15 09:46:13

Lisa....yup, sometimes life just sucks big time. But then other times, life
is incredibly sweet and precious. With God in my heart, I am seeing more
and more of the sweet and precious side of life. Regarding your life story,
Lisa...you have enough to keep Freud busy for a lifetime, kiddo. You must
have an INCREDIBLY strong spirit to have prevailed through all that.
Especially having your mom die and dad reject you....makes we want to reach
through this computer and give you a huge hug.
Regarding anxiety: yes, I have always been afraid that people in my life
would drop dead....after all, it happened twice when I was little (my dad
and my uncle). Then I get "the gift of PVC's" and of course, I start
worrying that I will drop dead suddenly. How perfect.<g
was a newlywed (the first time<smile
if my husband was breathing. I even took his pulse sometimes when he was
sleeping. Now how dysfunctional is THAT!! His father and brother both
dropped dead from heart attacks in their early 40's and so starting at about
age 30 until I divorced him when he was 51, I worried about that. Actually
(and I hope you all don't think I'm HORRIBLE to say this) near the end of
our really bad marriage, I was sometimes kind of disappointed when I heard
him breathing. Ohmigosh, that sounds awful. I'm really a nice
person...really I am. :-) Just glad to have him out of my life. Whew.
Suzy who really IS nice...just very honest<smile

Anxiety, etc.

2008-05-15 06:30:39

I think I was skimming but caught the drift of something... Suzy, we have
alot in common (besides thinking you are funny... hehe) as I too have a big
fear that people close to me will up & die. I'm better at this than when I
was an adolescent or college student (hmmm, that's when the PVC's started!
Coincidence?) My parents split up (messy messy) when I was 5 in 1963, then
my mom (only single parent in the whole grade school) got cancer and died
when I was 13. I had to go live with my Dad & Stepmonster, who said after 6
months "Either SHE goes, or I GO!" My dad said "She goes." (ME... who was
not a bad kid!) They put me in an orphanage for wards of the state(!) and I
was the only kid with "parents" paying for me to be there. (It was the
cheapest "boarding school" my miserly father could find.) I was racially in
the minority and got picked on, beat up, and had things stolen and school
projects ruined in the middle of the night because I was pretty & had nice
clothes... I can still remember my stepmonster hissing "The trick, Lisa, is
to come out of a place like this smelling like a rose!" on the rainy
September night they dropped me off... Eeek la beek.
Anyway, when I would fly to Minnesota from Illinois to stay with my grandpa
on the holidays in high school & college, I would lay in bed listening to
him breathe in the other room, petrified that he would snore his last with
ME alone there. (He lived to be 93 and died peacefully in his sleep at a
HOSPITAL.) My friends in school and even my husband to this day shake their
heads and laugh at me for the things I conjure up to worry about. My old
boyfriend used to say, in an ominous voice: "She imagines the WORST... and
it SCARES her....!" (The things I would envision when on the back of his
motorcycle! Argh!) It's true, I can get right into a near panic just
thinking up all the worst-case scenarios for situations. It's pathetic!
Luckily that kind of brain can also be used positively, in a creative way. I
try to turn those energies the right direction and am better and better at
it as I get older. (Note to Susan, I can't WAIT to go through menopause
too!) I am terrible when people are sick, especially my husband. And
hospitals? Don't even get me started. I just emotionally shut down like a
switch. When my husband had an emergency appendectomy in February
(ruptured!) he said dryly, "Lisa? She was a regular Florence Nightengale."
NOT.) I even think my mom added to her cancer and illnesses by worrying and
being full of anxiety and guilt instead of peace. Again, I AM getting better
as time goes on. My life is good and I am very fortunate to be blessed with
my family and my closest friends. I never aspired to climb a corporate
ladder, just to have the kind of family I never did. And now I have it, and
we are living in the town I grew up in, when my mom died! (How's that for
full circle & healing chances...) I know my faith in God has become stronger
and is one thing I can count on when I need a wave of reassurance.
Hey Suze, you thought YOU were long winded! Thanks for "listening",
xox Lisa
PS: I used to love roller coasters but with 4 kids and MY imagination, l say
at this point, life is scary enough, why PAY to be terrified! Bungee? NEVER

Hi Tammy,
I talked with Aaron yesterday. He's way behind on
answering email, so I thought I'd give you an update.
Verapamil is still working well for him. He's one of
the lucky ones who has had no side affects at all.
As well as PVCs, he occasionally gets ventricular
tachycardia. I forgot to ask if the Verapamil helped
with his VT, but I'm guessing it mostly helps the
PVCs.
Which doctor at Arrhythmia Associates do you use? Do
you think all of them would prescribe Verapamil if
called for? For reasons I don't totally understand,
my cardio is opposed to Verapamil.
Rob

Message to Aaron Levine

2008-05-14 19:55:20

Hi Aaron -- I read your message about the Verapamil. I'm glad there is
someone else out there taking it. I thought I was the only one and it has
helped me 99% as well. So are you doing ok on it. Just wondering, kind of
personal here but, do you have any problems with constipation? I've been on
it for 4 months and except for that 1% (maybe once or twice a month, a few
here and there) it has been working. Did you cardio say how long you could
stay on it and if there were any long term side effects?
Thanks for your help in advance....

Hello to everyone and I wish everyone good PVC free lives. I posted the
other day about Hawthorn Berry and prayer and someone requested more info on
the herb. I
had 10,000 PVC's daily with lots of runs of tri's and bi's that no meds ever
helped. I did the mag/calc/etc stuff--you name it I tried it. Then a
wellness pharmacist told me about Hawthorn, I looked it up online and at
health food stores and decided to give it a try. I take Jarrow Formulas 500
mg out of Los Angeles and I started out taking 2 in the morning and 1 in the
afternoon. After about 6 weeks I noticed less of them and after about 3
months hardly any at all. It has remained that way now for about 1 year. I
now only take 1 daily. I know that it has to build up in your system over a
period of weeks before it has an effect. Anyway, I hope that helps the
person that requested more info. Don't forget prayer too--it's a super
combination. Good luck and God bless. Also, will someone tell me again how
to get off of the mailing list?

Thanx for the web address, i'll look it up when i get some free time ! and
thanx for the info on magnesium intake, i myself thought i was not taking
enough i mean, 300mg per day is not such a great dose compared to what ive
heard others are taking and if its not enough it wont work ! like you say i
think i'll pop another one today making it 3 times per day making my intake
450mg, try that for a couple of days and if nothing changes i'll increase it
once more.
Do you take your mag with food ?
Or is it ok to take anytime ?
re:- calcium, do you mean to take supplements (pills) like the mag ?(health
store)
Anyhow, my heart is now doing a lovely drum rhythm, so i think i'll rock
along with it ! perhaps a little sing song ! boom, boo, gone, gone, gone,
boom BOOM , oh well i'll never make it big but i will beat the palps ! lol

Hi Suzy!
Yes - I find myself looking forward to menopause too:))
Unfortunately my Mom tells me the women in our family have tended to
go into menopause rather late (and I'm only 37), so I guess I
better "grin and bear it." :)))
You're right too about the power of our thoughts. Have you
heard of RET (rational emotive therapy)? I learned it many years
back when I was struggling with severe panic attacks AND PVCs. It
really helped me out a lot, and I still use it. I guess it's a
matter of training our minds to work FOR us, not against us:)) My
friend (Annie) is quite the optimist, and is as sweet as she can be.
She's helped me though many a night of heavy duty palps. From
reading your posts, I picture you as being a lot like her (except
maybe the part about enjoying the feeling of her palps <lol
My PVCs have calmed a bit tonight, but I'm afraid to try and go
to bed because I figure they'll probably return full force. I don't
know about everyone else, but I usually just get up and read or go on
the computer when that happens. For me, they just get worse if I lay
in bed trying to go to sleep. My husband, of course, has the ideal
cure. Can you guess what it is? HaHaHa!!! And me busy worrying
about keeling over in the middle of it! As my 13 year old would
say, "Too much information," huh?? :))) Back to my book. Good
night everyone.

RE: [PeoplewithPVCs] Lots of PVCs

Val....I think your friend is nuts.<smile
to have that attitude? It just shows that so much of this is ATTITUDE. You
and your friend have the same heart palps and she ENJOYS them and you (and
I) FEAR them. Boy, just shows that if we change our attitudes, we've got it
made! Thanks for sharing that!
Regarding extra palps around your period, I get that too. I haven't
discovered a magic cure for that but I do think it comes a lot from the
extra anxiety that comes naturally with that hormonal storm going on in my
body. During those days I describe myself as feeling like I want to jump
out of my skin. Sound familiar?? I'm 49 and am waiting impatiently for
menopause to finally get here. I'm gonna enjoy it immensely!

Lots of PVCs

2008-05-13 11:45:28

Hello All,
Boy am I tired of these things. Knowing that they're always
worse around the time of my period is a comfort, but I still HATE the
stupid things. They've been with me pretty constantly the last
couple of days. Have any of you ladies found any remedies to make
the palps a little better during your premenstrual time? If so, I'd
appreciate hearing from you.
One thing that I do is keep a journal - not just of my PVCs, but
other stuff too. I find it helpful to be able to look back and see
that I've "conquered" lots of fears and that some of the scary
feelings I get I've had before. The journal has also helped me
uncover patterns as far as when I get the PVCs, and what things set
them off. Keeping the journal gives me a sense of control over the
blasted things.
You all will love this - I have a friend who gets palps
occasionally, and she says she thinks they're kind of neat. She
likes to sit in bed and feel the neat rhythms emitted by her
palpitating heart. I wish I could think that way, but I don't think
that's ever going to be in the cards for me, no matter how far I come
in accepting them.
I forget who sent in the little song sung to the tune
of "Mickey," but I LOVED it. This is a creative group of people:)))
Take care all....
Luv ya,

Why don't you try medical transcription? That's what I do, I work
out of my home, make my own hours, the pay is great. I only have to
run into town once a day to pick up and drop off work. Plus, I have
had jobs in doctors offices where, when I was feeling my worse with
PVC's, could talk to a doctor or nurse anytime I needed to.
To Everyone: I am getting ready to "Face the Dragon" on my

Also, alcohol is poison to me, it is a known irritant and stimulant
to the heart. After two beers I can count on PVC's, and it makes my

making any difference just now however, ive only been taking it for 5 days.
I wondered should I up the dose a little ?
I take it 1 in the morning 150 mg and 150 mg in the afternoon.
Am i taking it at the correct times ?
thanks, jackie.

Good for you, Steve!

Congratulations on facing the dragon so successfully:)) I loved your
quotes too! I bit the bullet last summer and flew to Utah, hiked in
Moab, took the Amtrak to San Francisco, and then flew from San
Francisco back to Maryland (where I live). My husband, my daughter

Thanks to all of your encouragement and support, I got my ass on that
airplane and made the trip to my reunion. Fact is, I had a few
PVC's, but no more than usual. In fact halfway through the weekend,
my mind was so far away from PVCs that I don't think I had as many.
I would encourage all of you to "face the dragon"...

Hi and thanks for your reply on the potassium tests. Are you actually taking
magnesium then ?
if so, why ? if your levels are ok ? does it do anything for you ?(if you
take it)

Hi again, yes ive also read somewhere that too much potassium isnt too good
for the heart and can cause palps, i wondered if there was any way in
checking mag and potassium levels ?

Re: [PeoplewithPVCs] liz

Thanks for the info on getting my potassium levels checked. I too am in the
uk so I know no what to ask for ! its a shame we have to let our docs know
what the tests are for ! given that they are theones handing out the drugs
you would think they would know that !!

Hi and thanx for your reply on your views on the potassium.
Its funny you should say have a banana with my mag because ive been having a
banana after my main meal or perhaps when i feel peckish mid morning AND ive
noticed the palps seem to go away for a while or at least seem to be more
settled !
SO its on with the mag and also with the nanas !!! LOL

What a cool idea - writing a book. I LOVE to read. As a matter
of fact I just got back from Atlantic Book Warehouse, where I bought
FIVE paperbacks. What a splurge:))) I don't get to read for
pleasure very much during the school year. Too busy writing lesson
plans and IEPs! Happy writing:))

Re: Feeling blah

2008-05-08 12:59:06

Dear Susan,
Thanks:) I thought getting back on track with my eating,
exercise, water, vitamins, etc.. would take care of the PVCs, but I'm
having a fair amount of them today. I just remembered that they are
probably kicking in because I'm getting ready to start my period. IT
always makes me feel better if I can find some "rhyme and reason" for
them.
Yes! I defintely live on the East Coast - a little place called
Allen, Maryland. I'm about 30 minutes from Ocean City, MD. The
humidity has been awful, hasn't it? I wonder if we'll ever have a
week of nothing but sun ever again? :))) SOmetimes it seems like
it's going to clear up, but then it goes right back to the same old,
same old. Oh, well - fall will be here soon enough! Take care, and
thanks for your response.
Oh, by the way, I can't usually tolerate alcohol either. It
often causes my heart to speed up, which bothers me even more than
the palpitations, which I'm used to! Whether it bothers me or not
seems to depend on where I am in my cycle. Isn't that ridiculous?!?
Take care...

Re: Getting a job jitters

2008-05-07 22:25:02

Suzy
Perhaps you could 'train' for a new career (even part time) at college
or night school. That way you would meet like minded people, make new
friends, learn new skills and hopefully have a new career at the end
of it.
I have an 'A' level in psychology, have studied french for one year
and did a computer course. I am now contempleting a course in
homeopathy (an interest of mine). I might add these were all gained
after the age of 40.
Choose an interest which will lead to a job you enjoy. I feel life is
too short to work at something you hate just for the money. However I
do appreciate the worries financial problems can bring. Lack of money
is not much fun but then again neither is a job one hates...and I
know all about that!!
Hope this helps
love Gill xx

Re: [PeoplewithPVCs] Feeling blah

You did not get me down. You have a lot on your mind and wanted to share it
with us. That is great. Because not only are we here for the PVC's but we
are here for the other areas of our lives too. I have to take Klonopin
twice a day or I am nuts. They have had me on numerous other stuff and it
does not help. It would be great to only pop one if you needed to but I can
not and have not been able to since April. I have to completely stop this
weekend for 48 hours so if they want to put me in the hospital then I will
not be drugged. That is when I need my army, right?

Re: [PeoplewithPVCs] anyone ?

2008-05-07 20:17:20

Hi all, ive just heard somewhere that your body cannot keep magnesium if your
body is short on potassium ! is that correct ?
if thats so i was wondering is it possible that because of lack of potassium
no magnesium or very little is stored making the heart beat irregular !!!
sounds like a link there ! lol
well, ive started the mag and yesterday i was not too bad although i was
tired and was wondering also if it was due to the fact of fewer palps and
less anxiety making me sleep.
Ive also started using oil burners with lavender sandalwood etc, anything
rather than take what the doctor ordered (flaicanide) thanx but no thanx !!!!
let nature take its course !
I was also thinking of taking a potassium supplement, anyone got any views on
this ?
jackie.

Feeling blah

2008-05-07 10:47:53

Hi All,
This is one of those nights when I'm feeling sort of
discouraged. I've had very few palps lately, but last night, they
were really bad. I ended up taking a Klonopin, which I always sort
of look at as a defeat, but I just didn't feel like dealing with
them. It's tough to get them back when you've been going through a
stretch w/o them. The good news is I think I figured out why I had
them, because they are gone again today:) I've been doing the Weight
Watchers program since July 6th, and that's pretty much when the PVCs
let up. However, when I went away to PA this weekend, I pretty much
ditched all of the healthy things I've been doing. In other words, I
ate some rich foods, didn't take my multivitamin or drink lots of
water, didn't get much exercise or sleep, etc... Today I got right
back on track and I've had no palps so far. That should cheer me up,
but for some reason I've still got the blahs. Hmmmmmmmm...wonder if
it's because my period is due to start in 4 or 5 days??? Also -
we've had such lousy weather. Rain, rain, clouds, humidity, etc...
I guess I'm also worrying about Mom's upcoming surgery. Enough
already. I don't want to bring anyone else down. It helps to get it
out of my system though. Hubby and I aren't on the same wave length
at the moment. No biggie - just a bit of a dry spell. Tends to
happen when I'm fretting. Take care all, and thanks for listening.
You all are SUPER:)))))))))

Hi. yes it is some help however, on mentioning stomach cramps thats what i
have ben getting for a day or two since starting the mag but with me only

with the stomach !
its the palps thats the problem ! lol

Hi Everybody,

Re: [PeoplewithPVCs]Weird night.....

2008-05-06 11:05:43

Last night, while laying in bed, I was having the usual skips off and on,
but then I had a run of them, followed by my heart accelerating
dramatically. I was fully relaxed during the whole thing, didn't experience
any sweating, dizziness, etc and just coughed to get back into a normal beat
sequence....
Wasn't till this morning that I started worrying about it. I know that
after one of the Holter tests I was diagnosed with PSVT, though the
cardiologist I saw didn't think it was true tachycardia.....
Has anyone else had this ?
It was like my heart was detached...it was racing away, I could feel it, but
only in my chest, I didn't feel it pounding, just going really fast.......it
was really weird.
Maybe I'm the only one in the entire universe....hehehe
Please help, I'm going slowly mental here :)

Thanx for the info on the intake of magnesium, i'm taking the chelated form
so i thought i might up it a little from 300mg per day to perhaps 450mg and
see what happens ! taking it at intervals throughout the day.
I still dont think this will be enough but i have not got any corrects
guidelines on just how much would be enough !
jackie.

2008-05-05 22:32:39

Hi Everybody,
I just got back from a weekend trip to PA. I tried to post a
message before I left, but it didn't go through for some reason.
Hopefully I'll have better luck with this one!
Roxanne and Jennifer - I live about 30 minutes away from Ocean
City! It has been an unusually rainy summer for us. I feel bad for
people who come down for a whole week when the weather is like that.
One or two days aren't bad because there's plenty of indoor stuff to
do, but after that it gets old quick.
Mickey - I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I am also going
through some tough times with both of my parents. My Mom is having
surgery Aug. 10th, and my Dad has a progressive lung disorder. Up
until last December, they were both in perfect health. I will be
praying for you and your Dad.
Take care everyone.......

off with my last initial too) :)))

Re: [PeoplewithPVCs]magnesium

Hi everyone, can you all let me know how much magnesium you take ?
I have been taking over the last three days = 150mg twice per day.
I have not felt any different and wondered if i am not taking enough !
also, should i take the mag all at once = 300mg or spread it to twice daily ?
jackie.

Hi, ive just read about your successes with magnesium, I too have just
started taking the mag but, I have been advised by my gp to only take 150mg
twice per day =300mg. I have not felt ANY difference at all, do you perhaps
think i am not taking enough ? if mine is only 300mg and yours is a total of
1000mg per day mine seams a little weak !
anyone else reading this, can you give us your details :- how much mag you
all take per day ?
AND do you take it all at once or at different intervals throughout the day ?
jackie.

Re: [PeoplewithPVCs] Welcome to all Newcomers

2008-05-04 20:13:32

Hi!
My name is Susan and I am new to this group. Holter monitor testing has
shown that I have PACs, though the test never picked up any of my worst
episodes. I assume that our experiences are similar. I started all this at
a time of high stress seven years ago. I can have a heavy "thud" or a slight
"thud". My worst ones feel like an engine stalling and last several seconds
(VERY scary to me-I keep wondering when it will "stall" for good!) And on
the other end, I can be slightly aware of them - I weird sensation in my
chest- and can tell I'm having many in succession by checking my pulse.
Sometimes I have a weird sensation in my chest and have a panic-attack
reaction. Does anyone have experiences that vary this much?! My
cardiologist keeps telling me I'll be fine. I've learned to try to just go
with them - except for the "engine stalling" ones - they still scare me big
time! The one test I haven't done is the stress-test. My cardio would do
it, but, honestly, I have been afraid of doing the test!! Thanks in advance
for your input!!
Susan

still work out no matter how BIG they seem. I felt like I was gonna be the
first to go with my heart and chest pains, but everything took a break ....
