x-post: Webpage on Functional Behavioral Assessments

2008-02-29 20:34:00

I came across this, and I think it's a good, succinct page for learning about
conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments. Just wanted to share it.

workbook sheet protectors?

2008-02-29 09:16:48

Has anyone ever come across any good techniques for protecting workbook
sheets?

I use math workbooks to practice math skills with my child and it gets expensive
to keep replacing the books. In the past I have slipped plastic sheet protectors
over the page, use a dry-erase marker and reuse the page but it is often
difficult to get the marks off of the plastic sheet cover.  Are there any
good worksheet or workbook protectors or other tricks out there? I need a
side-loading protector since the pages are in the workbook and not loose
pages.  Thanks a bunch!

USED ABLLS OR ABLLS-R FOR SALE ?

2008-02-28 21:53:18

Dear Members,
I would love to acquire the ABLLS or ABLLS-R . I wondered whether any
of the members knew where I could obtain it second-hand or would any
members have an edition that they would wish to sell. I am aware that
it is available from certain US websites but I thought I would try
asking whether any of the members could help in any way before going
ahead and ordering a rather expensive first hand copy. I would dearly
like to obtain a Spanish version since that is my first language but
that is probably asking too much! By the way we live in the United
Kingdom but I would be happy to pay any carriage charges,
Yours Faithfully,
Lilian

stimming

2008-02-27 22:47:51

Hi-
Research has demonstrated that self-stimulatory behavior is intrinsically
reinforcing. That is, that there's no purposeful intent to the behavior... it's
not to get attention, it's not to get out of something else. The behavior
provides some pleasure to the person that is engaging in it. Lovaas conducted
many studies on self-stimulatory behavior, and the extinction thereof. He found
that even when painful electric shock was applied as a consequence of stimming,
the stimming continued. If a subject was prevented from stimming, they would
just double up on it when they could; as if the subjects had to get a certain
amount of stim time in... a quota.
My son (age 12) has adopted and, subsequently abandoned, several methods of
stimming over the years. His current, and longest lived method, is a
wrist-to-wrist rapid extension and contraction of all of his fingers. If he is
in an intense stim, his palms actually smack together, making a pretty loud
sound. He was a second grader, in General Ed. with a one-to-one aide, when I
read the data on self-stimulatory behavior. Most of the kids had gotten over the
curiosity and just ignored his stimming. I had it written in his I.E.P. that
his stimming would not be addressed by school personnel... it would simply be
ignored. Since it wasn't too distracting, and wasn't hurting him, or anyone
else, I figured he didn't need to be dogged for a behavior that had no
discernable function. My contention was that if they were going to intervene, or
redirect, my son when he demonstrated such behavior, then they had to do so for
every nail biting, lip licking, hair twirling, knee bouncing, eraser chewing kid
in his class, as well. So, when it was time to work and he was stimming, the
aide simply said, "Time to get to work." And, when it was story time, or a
movie, he could stim to his heart's content.
Low and behold, by the time he was half-way through the fourth grade his
teacher and principal announced that he no longer had any self-stimulatory
behavior. "He never does any of that any more." LOL!!! I said, you want to
bet? The second he get's the car , after school, I can hear his palms slapping
together, over my shoulder. Once we get home, he's still gettin' with it for the
next hour or so.... hard time! I guess he had noticed that no one else was doing
it, or the pace was so busy that he just couldn't get to the stimming during the
school day. And, consistent with the Lovaas research, he made up for that lost
time.
We don't know why they do it, or what it does for them. My son is
non-verbal. He used to stick his index fingers in his ears and pop them out at
an angle, so that the vacuum he'd created made a "pop" sound as he withdrew his
fingers from the ear canal. For months, I thought he was just stimming. Turns
out he had a great deal of fluid, and pressure, in his ear drums, behind the
tympanic membrane... but no visible infection. The world must have sounded like
he was under water... so he was trying to relieve the pressure, himself. Once he
was tubed, he never did the ear pop again. It's very difficult, and almost
unfair, to address a behavior when we don't know the function of it.
For whatever it's worth... fighting autism is war... pick your battles wisely -
love unconditionally!

Verbal Behavior Program and Asking Academic Questions

2008-02-27 02:56:08

Everyone:
We have started a verbal behavior program with our child in a typical
2nd grade classroom. The goal is that he has to ask at least 100
academic questions per day. Those 100 questions are to be divided
across all the 2nd grade subjects. The teachers would like to know
what questions are considered academic. Our educational consultant has
given some examples - but I wanted to know if anyone had a list. If
the teachers saw the questions that needed to be asked then contriving
the situations would be a great deal easier. Can anyone help with this?
Thanks Leanne

Wii sports game package

2008-02-24 18:51:51

I had to teach my son with autsim, many years ago, how to play a video game. He
always wanted to watch others play but couldn't do it by himself. His siblings
did not have the patience to teach him so I spent 15 minutes each morning one
summer learning how to play Toy Story on the Sega (obviously this was a long
time ago & you can imagine my chagrin when one of my older ones, who had been
away at college, commented wryly that he now knew how I spent my time....) The
Wii is so much easier...I would choose one game and do it with him hand over
hand for one minute and then two...building to independence and endurance.
Hope this helps,
Mary in MD

Wii game recommendation for 7 yr old

2008-02-24 18:51:15

We, too are Wii fans. We have two sons on the spectrum, and the one has a
difficult time with Wii Sports as well.
One game we've found fun for all of us to participate with is Smarty Pants.
The questions are geared to age of players, and when we play with the kids,
we play as a family unit instead of competing. Our kids love it, and I've
even found it fun to play with my 15 year old niece (she's asked questions
relative to her, me to a 37 year olds!) My husband and I have fun playing
each other as well when the kids are in bed, it gets quite competitive when
we play!
We love the Wii and tend to only play it as a family. We had a Wii bowling
party for my Dad's 75th birthday and had everyone bowling! So far we've had
no issues with overusage of the Wii, so that's been nice.

Subject: ABAI Education Conference: Call for Posters
Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2008 17:34:08 -0400
On behalf of the Association for Behavior Analysis International Executive
Council, we are excited to announce the Call for Posters for the 2008 ABAI
Education Conference: "Evidence-Based Practice, Scientifically-Based
Instruction, and Educational Effectiveness." The event will take place Friday,
September 5 through Sunday, September 7, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Reston in
Reston, Virginia near Washington, D.C.
In addition to an exciting line up of professionals and researchers working on
evidence-based education in the federal, public, and private sectors, we will
hold a poster session showcasing effective educational practices and evaluating
evidence standards.
We invite you to participate by submitting a poster on the Web at
http://www.abainternational.org/educonf/callforposters.asp
Space is limited, so we encourage you to submit as soon as possible. The
deadline for poster submissions is Thursday, April 24th.
Please note that a person may be listed as the primary (presenting) author for
only ONE poster.
Posters may include information on existing effective empirically-based
practices; how effective programs are designed, developed, tested, and
implemented; standards of evidence; and the application of scientific research
methods to evaluate effectiveness. Descriptions of programs (private and
public), products, or procedures that use evidence-based practices to achieve
measurably superior student outcomes are welcome. Poster presenters are
encouraged to bring handouts, resource materials, and/or other information that
will allow attendees to learn more about their presentation topic.
This exciting program will provide attendees a forum to learn about
evidence-based education, legislation issues and advocacy for the adoption of
effective practice in schools, and information on the work in evidence-based
education being accomplished by ABAI practitioners, scholars, and researchers.
To provide the most current information regarding evidence-based education we
have assembled an esteemed group of speakers, including:
Anthony Biglan, Ph.D., Oregon Research Institute
Ronnie Detrich, Ph.D., The Wing Institute
"Evidence-based Education: Can We Get There from Here?"

x-post/FYI: National Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health

National Survey of Children with Special Health Needs
Federally funded Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health Web site
http://www.childhealthdata.org/content/Default.aspx
New child health data show state-to-state differences in quality of care
A new government survey reveals children with special health care needs, such
as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and asthma, don't
consistently get the care that is federally recommended and that there are vast
state-to-state differences. This is the first time standardized data at the
national and state level has been available to the media and families in an
easily accessible way.
"Parents of children with special health care needs often have obstacles in
getting the information they need," said Christina Bethell, Ph.D., director of
the Data Resource Center and associate professor of pediatrics in the Oregon
Health & Science University School of Medicine. "The Maternal and Child Health
Bureau, which designed and sponsored this survey, is committed to making this
data available to the public, parents and media through the Data Resource
Center, where you can find specific information about how your state fares in an
easy-to-use Web site."
The survey is especially significant because it finds that more than 10 million
American children have a special health care need -- that amounts to one in five
households with children younger than 18. While states perform well in specific
areas, NO STATE is providing ALL of the recommended care to the majority of
their children with special health care needs.
These differences found between states are cause for concern. For instance, in
Kansas, just 28 percent of children younger than 12 with special health needs
receive care that meets all five of the performance measures recommended by the
federal government. By contrast, in Montana, only 13 percent of children with
special health care needs meet all five of these measures. For adolescents, the
best-performing state was New Hampshire and the worst was Mississippi.
In addition to state-by-state comparisons, the Data Resource Center Web site
housed at OHSU allows media and families to search by other factors such as
income or race/ethnicity.
The public and others are encouraged to take advantage of the federally funded
Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health Web site at
http://www.childhealthdata.org/content/Default.aspx

Saturday Dates April 5 & 12, May 3,10,17 & 31, June 7 and 14)
Brothers and sisters are too important to ignore, if for only these
reasons:
Siblings will be in the lives of family members with special needs
longer than anyone. Brothers and sisters will be there after parents
are gone and special education services are a distant memory. If they
are provided with support and information, they can help their sibs
live dignified lives from childhood to their senior years.
Throughout their lives, brothers and sisters share many of the
concerns that parents of children with special needs experience,
including isolation, a need for information, guilt, concerns about
the future, and care giving demands. Brothers and sisters also face
issues that are uniquely theirs including resentment, peer issues,
embarrassment, and pressure to achieve.
No classmate in an inclusive classroom will have a greater impact on
the social development of a child with a disability than brothers and
sisters will. They will be their siblings' life-long "typically-
developing role models."
Sources of Stress for Siblings
Not all siblings will experience these issues, but
here are some to be aware of:
Embarrassment around peers. Jealousy regarding amount of time parents
spend with their brother/sister
Frustration over not being able to engage or get a response from
their brother/sister
Being the target of aggressive behaviors
Trying to make up for the deficits of their brother/sister
Concern regarding their parents stress and grief
Concern over their role in future care giving
THE ELIJA FOUNDATION hopes to recognize and acknowledge through this
initiative, the social and emotional needs of the parents and their
typically developing children who have been touched by Autism.
We hope you will consider joining us, as we create a special time and
place for these crucial family members to receive the support that
they need.
The pilot will provide the typical sibling participants approximately
1 hour of Art Therapy & 1 hour of Music Therapy With Board Certified
& Licensed Art & Music Therapists for small group Saturday Sessions
Our pilot program will initially service SIBLINGS (ages 4- 15) and
PARENTS with Siblings under 3 ONLY, however, based on interest and
funding we are aiming to form classes for the entire family (those
with ASD and Parent ONLY groups) to participate either simultaneously
or during different times throughout the week. We do not have a date
when these additional programs will be available.
PLEASE NOTE: The ELIJA Foundation is committed to this initiative
and we thank you all for your input and interest . ELIJA will be
sponsoring the SIBLING pilot and contingent on future funding, we
will create additional groups for individuals with Autism. ELIJA
understands the unique needs of those with ASD's and only wish to
provide a therapeutic & purposeful environment for them. We thank you
for your patience while we design a creative arts program
specifically for them, and do hope you will consider your typical
siblings for our pilot to this program initiative.
Please supply us with some information which will help us service
your family appropriately for this session or future ones.

x-post/OT/FYI: Federal bills HR 4188, HR 2609, HR 5028

2008-02-21 02:06:31

Just FYI of a sample of Federal Resolutions that looked of interest under the
search term "autism" at http://thomas.loc.gov/
The below is not the complete listing; there are other Resolutions, such as the
"Expanding the Promise" Act. For a complete list, look under search term
"autism".
If the links go bad on send, you can search for text and status of any bills of
interest in Congress either under search term or specific bill number.
I would be interested in the thoughts of those working on state insurance
coverage for autism/PDDs of the last bill below; HR 5028. An observation is that
if that bill would be of potential benefit that it could use some cosponsors to
have any hope of making it through committee.

Hi Fiends and Colleagues!
HAPPY SUPERBOWL SUNDAY FROM NEW YORK : )
Just wondered if anyone has information regarding Behavioral
Consultation in Idaho? Specifically, Marsing Idaho. I have a friend
from there, and her daughter's son has been recently diagnosed with
Autism. He now is having vocal tics. So first, service information in
that area is being solicited, and second, does anyone have some leads
on treating vocal tics? I would appreciate any info - tried
interventions/anecdotal data/JABA or BMOD articles, etc. Thanks so much
in advance!

Upcoming Event - Workshop: The Family’s Role in Interventions

2008-02-19 04:18:33

February Workshop: The Familys Role in Interventions
The cornerstone of any successful intervention protocol is the childs family.
In order for any therapy to be effective, the childs parents must be integral
and informed participants, as knowledgeable about the method of intervention and
as able to implement it as any member of the therapy team. Intervention that
lasts only as long as a therapists session will never have the same impact as
intervention that continues long after the therapists work is done. This
workshop is designed to provide participants with a general overview of the most
effective therapeutic options available and how they can be successfully
incorporated into the familys lifestyle. There will be breakout sessions
throughout the day to give participants the opportunity to discuss
child-specific issues with the presenters. Topics to be covered include:
Overview of Family-based Interventions: Understand how to implement
family-supported interventions such as Relationship Development Intervention,
Floortime and Biomedical Approaches.
Generalization and Maintenance of School- and Center-based Interventions:
Learn how to maximize the effects of Applied Behavior Analysis and
Speech-Language and Occupational Therapies.
Effective Advocacy: Discover how to secure an effective intervention plan for
your child by learning what your childs rights are under special education
laws;
Family Management: Discuss strategies for how to balance providing for the
many needs of your child on the spectrum without sacrificing your other family,
relationship and personal commitments.

Your help needed in fight for the right to practice and to license behavior analysts in Pa

2008-02-18 18:13:37

Hello all,
As you maybe aware, I am currently the chair of the Practitioner Issues in
Behavior Analysis SIG and also a lifetime resident in the great state of
Pennsylvania. Over the summer, we completed a licensing bill for behavior
analysts.
We are driving this bill in several states across the US in an effort to
ensure that no matter what happens with APA's new model licensing act, behavior
analysts will be allowed to practice. Our bill does nothing to restrict the
practice of behavior analysis from other professions; it just allows behavior
analysts to continue to practice in Pa and restricts the title of licensed
behavior analyst (BCBAs who choose not to licensed will have no fall out to
their practice from this bill). It also opens the path to greater consumer
protection and third party insurance payments for behavior analysts.
Anyhow, I have been in discussion with Speaker O'Brien about sponsoring the
bill. We could use a letter of support from people in Pennsylvania. This bill is
good for
behavior analysts. It starts licensing behavior analysts who have taken and
passed the BCBA exam who have 48 credits of coursework in their masters
program for a brief period in the final version (although they are still
working on the wording for that) and then moves the number up to 60 (the
equivalent of other master level licenses in the state of Pa.).
I believe it will have an extraordinary effect on increasing the overall
number of
master's programs in behavior analysis, which means many more faculty
positions. It also contains a provision to license Ph.D. level behavior
analysts- so the overall impact on psychology could be a behavior analytic
revival.
The bill is excellent for families for it will increase university interest in
starting behavior analytic programs, as it did for counseling and clinical
social work. Increased, university interest means increase in the overall
number of behavior analytic programs, which means an increase in behavior
analysts. In addition, it will help families to secure affordable behavior
analytic
services because behavior analysts will be able to bill insurance companies
directly.
Please take a moment to support our efforts. To do so you need to take two
steps.
First e-mail:
"Piecuch, Michael" mpiecuch@...
Michael works for Speaker O'Brien who is championing the bill on behavior
analysis licensing.
After you have done this, please go to
http://sites.state.pa.us/PA_Exec/Governor/govmail.html and e-mail a copy
of your letter to the governor. It is important at this point to show the
governor
that we have popular support for this movement.
Please make sure to include information on:
1. That you live in Pa.
2. That you believe that the licensing of behavior analysis offers the public
increased protection.
3. That you believe that the overall benefit will be good for the citizens of
Pa.
Your personal stories in the above matter are certainly helpful.
I sincerely believe that this is good for behavior analysis both academics
and practitioners. More importantly, it will help families seeking behavior
analytic services to receive third party payment for such services. Your
assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Joe Cautilli, Ph.D., LPC, BCBA

Universal Studios Florida

2008-02-18 00:38:50

Planning a trip to Universal Studios this spring. It will be our first time
there and I wanted to get some information on any disability pass they might
have. We have been to Disney World a bunch of time and are very familiar with
their disability pass and FastPass.
- Can you tell me how the passes work at Universal?
- Do they have a disability pass that allows us to reduce our wait time? Does
it cover all of their parks?
- What kind of proof do you need to take (doctor's note, etc.) to get the
pass?
- Do you have to get one every day of the trip or just on the first day?
- If there is no disabled person in our group, do they have something similar
to the FastPass that Disney has?
- Does staying at one of the Universal properties (hotels) help at all with
the passes?
Thanks for any information!

Navigating the Spectrum
Providing Direction and Support to Families
of Children on the Autism Spectrum
January Lecture Series: Advancing Peer, Play and Social Skills
Play is much more than simply a fun way to occupy leisure time. It is a
necessary precursor to language, social, cognitive and adaptive skills, and an
effective way to decrease behavioral anomalies. Unfortunately, many of the core
deficits of autism such as rigid thinking, aversion to change, repetitive
behaviors, restricted interests and difficulties with perspective taking prevent
children on the spectrum from acquiring fundamental play skills. Additionally,
most intervention programs address play and social skills from either a
behavioral or developmental perspective, when both approaches are necessary to
promote the childs optimal development. Parents, educators and therapists are
invited to join us for an interactive lecture series, consisting of video and
hands-on demonstrations and active participant practice, designed to advance
your childs play, peer and social skills. Participants will be given
assignments each week to practice the topics covered.
Module 1 The Importance of Play: Understand the stages of play and its
impact on other areas of development. Participants will be able to discuss
their childs current level of play and social skills and outline individual
goals for the series. January 3
Module 2 Play and ABA: How to teach the rules of play such as turn-taking,
following structured and rule-based games, and peer modeling using an Applied
Behavior Analysis approach. January 10
Module 3 Play and RDI: How to further interactive and social play and
encourage peer enjoyment using a Relationship Development Intervention approach.
January 17
Module 4 Playing with Peers: How to facilitate play in school, at home with
siblings, and in the community among peers. January 24
Module 5 Applying the Principles: Review and discussion of individual goals
and implementation techniques. Participants who attended all five modules will
create specifically tailored play and social skills goals and strategies to
address these areas. January 31

Effective Advocacy: Discover how to secure an effective intervention plan for
your child by learning what your childs rights are under special education
laws;
Family Management: Discuss strategies for how to balance providing for the
many needs of your child on the spectrum without sacrificing your other family,
relationship and personal commitments.

Hello All,
This is the only ABA-based discussion group I "still" belong to on
the Internet ('cept Long Island Autism, perhaps...) if anyone should
be interested in that
Hey, It's what I "Feel" about it, "Communication". I Feel the other
stuff tends to be "abusive," and am prepared to say so, "for," if not
despite, the consequences of doing so
Going for it? "My" way.. . Of the only way that makes sense to me
as an "Individual," (of Reason) thereof (For other Individuals,
thereof.. .;=).
Mike,
I ABA

If you're interested in that, this is where "I'm" at, thereof. If
you want me out just say so... so I can respond to it, (more
intelligently, thereof) or I'll be gone from "here," too, of telling
it like it is
People who are abusive "act" abusively, but certainly not "of"
Communication "for" Communication, thereof? .. . "Authority" maybe,
which is quite another thing, if not "of" the other thing, where not
of Reason, "as" Communication.. . "for" Understanding More (of The
feeling/s, thereof.;)

Many of the good things in "my" life came from "expressing" my

good is fantasy? ... That so many of us entertain ourselves with?
Otherwise? perhaps.. .] So, I suppose, I could say that about the
bad things I Feel and have felt as well? .. . Yes. It could have
been worse, and Logically would have been, otherwise? .. . No doubt,
to me
Nothing ventured nothing gained, thereof. At least I didn't
misbehave, thereof, (!) or so I Feel as understand of that. I'm
in "control," of my "self," thereof
Use your words? Go for it.. . (!) Communicate. What "I'm" more

Don't ask. It's my life. +/-/0 (Not necessarily in that order, of
