VB program/Schoo/GA

2007-12-29 08:35:31

My child attends public school here in Georgia. I'm concerned with
the programming. Below is a little bit about programming that they
are using. Can anyone give me some feedback? Please reply
privately. I'd appreciate any feedback...I have attended Vince
Carbone's workshops and this just doesn't look right.
Thank you,
Keira
(mom to Jake, 9)
****Below are the recommendations of the BCBA who consults with our
school.
Teaching sequence
For best results, it is recommended that Verbal Behavior
programs be run daily with a minimum of 30 trials a day. ( goal is
100)
Echoic: The teacher will prompt the child with 3-5 echoic ( child
dependent)
The echoic response should be in the presence of one item(
target)
Goal is to ensure correct, consistent responding
Mand: begin when echoic is established
In presence of target plus 1 untrained preferred item. It is
important to train an item with an untrained preferred item because
this teaches a child choice.
Procedure is meant to be rapid, with switching between echoic-
mand as often as needed
Return to echoic if 3 consecutive errors
Generalized mand: student emits 2x independently outside of
training session (=*)
A mand is truly mastered when the child emits generalized
mands in a natural setting.
Echoic to mand training protocol
1. Get the student's attention by:
- Observing what the student is interested in
- Using a reinforcer
- Calling the student's name
2. Say the word you want the student to echo
3. The student should repeat the word within 3 seconds
4. If the student request the item
- Give them the item right away
- Do not vocally reinforce the student (i.e.) "good job"
- Write a (+) on your data sheet
- Go to next trial
5. If the student does not repeat the word/ or does not mand for
the item
- Do not give them the item
- Write a (-) on the data sheet
- Pause and go onto the next trial. There is no correction
procedure
Important Crucial Components when implementing Verbal Behavior
Programs:
There is no Vocal antecedent. The antecedent is the object
or item.
When a child mands, do not verbally praise the child. The
reinforcement is the item they manded for.
The child chooses the items to be trained.
It is ok if the child changes their mind. Stop mand training
when they are satiated.
Place the item in different locations. In the air, on the
table, in a container.
You must generalize mands.

~Need Suggestions on Teaching Rhyming Words~
Hello,
My 5y/o son, Little Joe--diagnosed PDD-NOS at 2, is beginning to work
on rhyming words. I wish I could ask Temple Grandin how she learned to
do this. I am sure it was using pictures and not just hearing the
words, but I still wish we could pick her brain for suggestions.
Since I can't ask her, I am going to ask the next best people...YOU.
If you have experience with this with your child in ABA/VB, would love
to hear from you.
All Suggestions appreciated!

Starting a new job and would like some tips

2007-12-28 04:47:28

Hello...
My name is Rebecca and I am starting a new job in september. It is a
preschool early intervention program. There are seven children and some of them
are autistic. They are non-verbal. In the room they are using sign. I have
experience with autistic children but it has been awhile. I was wondering if
anyone could give me some tips or advice?
Thanks in advance.

2007-12-28 04:24:29

Does anyone have a link for a computerized data sheet for the ABLLS-R
version. I am finding the transfer of old to new is becoming very
challenging and with the goal additions and new criteria although
stated in the back of the book the changes-it is starting to trip me
up!! I hate to think that I actually might have to rescore the entire
thing over again! I feel like it is using up valuable teaching time!
Also, I am needing some suggestions for my child (12yrs) who is
struggling still when the directive is placed with the object. He can
act & retrieve correctly if just the object is stated but you add the
directive and it is as if he loses his train of thought mid stream am
I on track with this being an "auto clitic" issue?ANYONE???? I can
offer more info if anyone is curious;)
Thanks!

Video Social Stories from Carol Gray and Mark Shelley

2007-12-27 14:20:34

Announcing Video Social Stories
From: Carol Gray, Mark Shelley, & the Special Minds Foundation
View video from Carol Gray & Mark Shelley: www.dttrainer.com/smovvid.php
Hi,
This email is one of my few posts per year and is about a new tool to help teach
our kids with autism and Aspergers. I get frequent requests for tools to help
our kids with social skills so here is a gem.
Imagine combining Carol Gray's social stories with the power of video for our
visual learners. That is what has happened with the collaboration between Carol
Gray, Mark Shelley, and the Special Minds Foundation. Volume 1 is the first in
the planned series and covers basic social concepts & skills at school. Future
volumes will address a broad range of topics and target young children to
adults. The foundation has raised donations to help produce these materials so
that the cost to the user can be much lower than otherwise possible for the
product.
The Social Concepts & Skills volume will not only be valuable for teachers, but
also for parents helping prepare their children for school situations.
Additionally, some of the situations are issues for both home and school. The
product was designed for children with Aspergers and others on the autism
spectrum, however it will also benefit any child with limited social skills.
Storymovies, Volume 1, targets students developmentally 8-12 years old and
includes 25 stories based on 9 movies. There are 2 versions: Standard Edition &
Professional Edition. Both versions include the main color version DVD of the
25 stories and a user's guide. The Professional version includes a black &
white DVD version that is used for children distracted by color; a raw footage
DVD that is useful for additional teaching and testing purposes; and a CD with
printable pictures and related activities for generalization, practice, &
review.
Mark Shelley is a parent of a child with Aspergers, which is the reason for his
efforts toward helping children learn social skills. Mark and I started talking
about digital video based social stories about 4 years ago. Through much of his
effort and sacrifice he now has this first important volume with more on the
way. The collaboration with Carol, getting donors to help fund the development,
and him taking significant personal risk have all been critical in getting to
this point. I want to help get this in the hands of as many teachers and
parents as possible by substantially cutting our margins and offering this tool
at a 33% discount off of list. The sales of the current volume will help fund
the continued expansion of the series. Please spread the word about this
important work!

Temp. avail. in NC: experienced ABA therapist with proficient sign language

2007-12-25 12:04:33

This might be of interest to someone vacationing in western North Carolina soon
who wants their child to get some ABA hours in, someone who has a team member
temporarily unavailable, or someone who could use help integrating sign language
into their program:
A great ABA therapist who has worked on our team for 5 years has finished her
teaching degree and has a one-month window of availability before she begins
teaching in her new state Aug. 15. In addition to being skilled in behavioral
teaching and American Sign Language, she is a creative and gifted natural
teacher who is great at finding opportunities for generalization (on a recent
road trip, for example, she had my math-hating son practically begging for the
opportunity to identify numbers on road signs -- for about 110 miles! -- to play
one of those crazy games that would only make sense to our kids). She has set
him up a web site with some learning activities and fun things
(http://pinkflowers.atspace.com/), written simple books for him based on his
photos and his modest and eccentric language base, and more. Someone doing an
outdoors vacation might even be interested in knowing that she's a skilled
horseback rider.
If you live or will be in that area and would like to know more, just drop me an
e-mail off-list at the address below and I'll pass the word on to her.

tips on Verbal Imitation? and compliance

2007-12-23 09:01:02

Our daughter would not imitate words or sounds at the outset of our home
program. We did two things which resulted in consistent verbal imitation.
1) Motor imitation was a strong skill, she would imitate most gross
and fine motor movements with the Sd "do this" and a model of the desired
motor skill. We began to mix in a simple sound echoic. So it looked like
this;
Tutor: DO THIS (claps hand)
Child: (claps hands)
Tutor: DO THIS (pats head)
Child: (pats head)
Tutor: DO THIS (sticks out tongue)
Child: (sticks out tongue)
Tutor: DO THIS ( "Ba")
Child: "Ba"
Tutor reinforces
This builds on behavioral momentum of easy responses to the difficult one
and uses an Sd already known to evoke imitation.
2) We did LOTS of mand trials with sign language paired with a vocal
word. We eventually faded the sign and used a vocal prompt which increased
the vocal repertoire and this increased her vocal imitation.
I would be interested to hear others opinions on the following statement:
Compliance is a learned behavior and the rate of the learner's compliance is
functionally related to the ability of the teacher to manipulate the
learner's environment.

Hello again,
I figured I should also include a little of my experience. I've been
working in a STARS model classroom for the passt two years (run by
Behavior Analyst Inc.), and also been formally trained through this
agency. I currently work with two home programs, one run by a Behavior
Analyst Inc. consultant which I've been with for 2 1/2 years and the
other run by myself through my experience of one year. My fiance's son
in So. California was also diagnosed at the age of 3 and now that he's
8, I've done plenty of reading/research. Let me know if I'm needed.

Updated ABBls

Have any of you seen the new version of the ABBLs? Is it really worth shelling
out another 60+ bucks for a new one? Is it that much of an improvement? That
much new material? I wonder if there is any way to just get an addendum version
for those of us who have already invested in the original.

TAAProject - The Joy of Autism Lecture Series, Gallery Exhibition & Talks

2007-12-22 03:23:23

http://www.taaproject.com/
Redefining Ability and Quality of Life:
presentations by authors, parents, researchers and autistic people.
The Joy of Autism: Redefining Ability and Quality of Life seeks to present
a provocative and critical presentation to challenge popular views about
autism. Presentations are by numerous autistic people with a variety of
views and will be presented both at Al Green Theatre and Lonsdale Gallery
in Toronto. A gallery exhibition will be held from October 5 through
November 5, 2006 at the Lonsdale Gallery. Lectures by researchers vested in
critical thinking and accurate science will discuss recent studies in
autistic cognitive abilities. Clinicians and autistic people will present
views about autism heard all too seldom, but which are authentic and
unfiltered views about life with autism. Parent authors and advocates will
talk about their journey to not only accept autism in the midst politicized
and negative semantics of "autism as tragic epidemic," but to launch into a
sphere of realization of the awesome nature of their autistic child. The
lectures will be held on October 10, 11 and 12 at the Al Green Theatre,
Miles Nadal, Toronto JCC and on October 14 at the Lonsdale Gallery. A panel
discussion on October 16 at the Al Green Theatre will be held with several
autistic people, parents and researchers to discuss politics of science and
negative market positioning of big autism charities doing harm to autistic
people and as a human rights issue.

Spitting problem

2007-12-21 04:09:13

Hello! My son is 8 years old and has been spitting since he was 4
years old. My BCBA has completed a functional analysis and it appears
to function primarily for attention as well as for sensory. We have
tried everything (DRI, DRO, Extinction, replacement skills,
punishment) but we cannot seem to get it to go away! Part of the
challenge is newer therapists who need extensive training. Can
anybody offer any other suggestions on what may be effective based on
their experience? This is a really challenging behavior - we cannot
go anywhere in public and it is very unsanitary! Thank you for your
help!

Telling your child hsi diagnosis

2007-12-20 05:03:25

Okay, for those who don't remember me :-), my child
was diagnosed at 4.5 (could have been diagnosed sooner),
we started aba at 5, "finished" formalized programming by
2nd grade. He isn't "recovered" but some would argue he
isn't autistic (I have long ago given up on the label game).
He has some "residual" issues (more emotional.. more adhd like..)
When and how have some told their children about their diagnosis?
I read the sumlin notes.. and well. the sumlins are in another
world. :-) Their child seems to have been completely normal and
recovered and not of the same issues as my child.
My child is 11 now... and it may be time to address what in the
heck all those funky 3 inch binders in our laundry room are
about. He knows about the tutors and has even asked me about them
but we never brought up the "A" word.
Any advice? Insight? It is so hard to believe that not that long
ago, I was a new parent of a relatively young child....

Suffolk County, NY moves to buy only HG-free vaccines for Pregnant Women and Kids

2007-12-19 16:02:27

The bold action of the Suffolk County New York Legislature opens up a whole new
area for activism on the mercury in vaccines issues: local hospital, clinics and
health programs. Local governments can decide whether they will or will not buy
mercury-containing vaccines. And our opponents are not nearly as well organized
on the local level as they are on the state or especially the federal level. I
encourage everyone to look into what their local governments are doing on this
issue and get active.
LEGISLATOR STEVEN STERN MOVES TO BAN MERCURY IN VACCINES
HUNTINGTON, NY Suffolk County Legislator Steven Stern (D-Huntington)
16th LD, Vice-Chair of the Legislature¹s Health & Human Services Committee,
introduced legislation today in the Suffolk County Legislature that if approved,
will require County Health Center facilities to utilize mercury-free
vaccinations only administered to pregnant women and children three and under.
As many special needs families know, the use of mercury in vaccinations has long
been suspected as a possible contributor to certain developmental disabilities,
including the autism spectrum. ³Although there has been no study producing a
definitive direct link, there is compelling research to raise serious and
legitimate concerns,² Stern said. ³As a parent of young children myself, I
would always rather be safe than sorry² Stern said.
Currently, there is New York State legislation that will place limits on the
amount of mercury in vaccinations. However, Stern noted that the New York State
law still allows for some amounts of mercury. Stern¹s bill would prohibit any
level. New York State law doesn¹t take effect until 2008. ³We must act now.
With 1 in 166 children being diagnosed with autism, a
profound tragedy of epidemic proportions is upon us and we must act with a sense
of urgency,² said Stern. ³As with any health crisis, we must always consider
both services for treatment and methods for prevention,² Stern explained. ³I
will always support programs for special needs families, but we also need
prevention. This legislation is not just a ban, but a call to action,² said
Stern.
Suffolk County Legislator Jack Eddington (D-Patchogue) 7th LD, who is a
co-sponsor of the bill added, ³This County has a history of acting proactively
to protect its citizens. This is another instance where Suffolk County must
take the lead and act in the best interest of its youngest residents. Even if
it is a small chance that mercury-laden vaccines cause autism, it is not a
chance worth taking when mercury free alternatives are available, ² Eddington
said.
John Gilmore, treasurer of Advocates for Children¹s Health Affected by Mercury
Poisoning said ³Something is fundamentally broken at the FDA and CDC and we are
fortunate that
we have local legislators who have the foresight and courage to do what is
necessary to protect our children from unnecessary exposure to mercury in
vaccines.²
Christine Zichittella-Heeren, President of the Long Island Chapter of the
National Autism Association and the mother of a six year old with autism said,
³I am very proud that the members of the Suffolk County legislature are taking
on this issue and care about their constituents. The safety of thimerosal has
not been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt and keeping it out of vaccines is the
right thing to do especially since autism is epidemic."
Suffolk County Legislator Elie Mystal (D-Amityville) 15th LD, who is the
Chairman of the Health & Human Services Committee, said ³This legislation is an
example of what County government is all about: protecting the health and
safety of our citizens.²
In addition to this legislation, Stern has also introduced Memorializing
Resolution M 035, which will be considered by the Legislature next month, in
support of the federal ³Combating Autism Act² of 2005.

toilet training

2007-12-18 15:40:33

I am new to this group and I have a question I was hoping someone
could help me with. I am currently working with a 5 year old boy with
autism. He is time toilet trainined and will stay dry if prompted by
myself or his parents. Very rarely has he ever just walked into the
bathroom by himself. He has some verbal language paired with the use
of picture point book. I have tried to shape some of his verbal
language into requests for the bathroom. We have put pictures of
bathroom all around his house to help ellicit requests, but we have
not had any luck. If he has an accident it doesn't seem to bother
him. I only see him 1 hour a month so it's difficult for me to be
very hands on in the implementation of anything. I am looking to see
if anyone has any ideas I can give to this family to help teach this
young boy to initiate using the bathroom. He doesn't really have any
big reinforcing items. He has a lot of little things that he likes,
otherwise I would have isolated a reinforcer just for initiation. Any
advice would be greatly appectiated.
Thanks.

Update of Bus Suspension and further write ups

2007-12-16 13:43:12

Hello,
First, I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and
suggestions. Many of you were as upset as we have been regarding
this situation.
I have contacted the Ohio Coalition and left a message, and I
believe I am going to try to contact OCALI.
Manifest determination is a new term to me, and I will be learning
all about it I am sure especially over the next few weeks and
years. I think this may be something very difficult to determine.
I am, also, keeping notes of conversations and all the write ups,
etc.
The school principle phoned me again on Monday morning since we'd
been playing phone tag before now.
She stated that LJ was written up twice on that Thursday, April 7th.
1. He had spit on the floor.
2. He had laid down on his seat on the bus.
I asked her to repeat the "laying down" part. She repeated what she
had said. I asked if that was illegal in the student code of
conduct, and she assured me it was. He is not allowed to lay down
on his seat on the bus.
She did say that she felt he had made remarkable progress since the
Behavior plan was put in place on 3/10, and that he was continuing
to respond well to the plan so she would not be suspending him for
those incidents.
The laying down on the seat is not specifically stated in the
student code of conduct book that I can see. I asked for another
copy be sent to me.
I keep thinking...
Why does he not have any situations on the other bus he rides with
his other bus driver? She has not had any problems with him.
Is it possible to ask for another bus/route in the AM? Would that
help?
Thank you for your thoughts and for your prayers too,
Candie

Suggestions, Thoughts, & Help Please

2007-12-16 04:28:52

LJ was suspended from riding the bus for one day.
MY 4 Y/O SON WAS SUSPENDED!!
I was in shock. I didn't know he could be suspended.
He had taken his shoes off and thrown them on the bus. Then, when
they told him he needed to keep his shoes on, he did, but then he
spit on the floor. This happened 3 out of 4 mornings only on the
morning trip to school. One of the days he threw his shoes, he hit
the bus aid in the head. I don't think he was aiming at her. I
think she was just in the line of his shot. Nevertheless, the bus
driver wrote him up for abuse of another those 3x.
This only happens on his morning pick up and ride to school; Candy's
route. He rides Candy's bus in the morning on the way to school,
and he rides Brenda's bus home.
The principal got all 3 write ups on Friday and called me on Monday
afternoon letting me know he would be suspended from riding the bus
for 1 day. I asked why I hadn't been told of the write ups before
now and why there was no warning before the suspension. She said
typically with 3 write ups came 3 days suspension, but we
were "lucky" they were only giving him 1 day suspension. Also, we
were "lucky" that we were given the opportunity to choose which day
we wanted the suspension for, Tuesday or Wednesday.
I picked Wednesday, because on Tuesday...I would have to take him to
school, go pick him up, then take him again, and pick him up. On
Wednesdays, I just had to take him then pick him up.
They wanted to begin a behavior plan. They asked for suggestions.
I told them I had suggested last year when he threw his shoes out
the bus window that they take off his shoes right after he sat down
in his seat. The bus driver and aid decided on their own to
continue to let him wear his shoes.
Last year, when he had thrown his shoes out the window, I suggested
they close his window as well as the window in front and behind him,
and take off his shoes. The next day they told me he had thrown his
shoes again out the window. I looked at the bus. LJ's window was
the only one that was down. All the other windows were up. I was
perplexed! I reminded them what my suggestions had been the
previous day. All they said was, "Oh."
They wanted a reward system so that when he did as he should he
would receive a reward as he reached the school. They, also,
suggested maybe he was bored, and that is why he is taking off his
shoes. They asked if he liked books. I said he loves books, but
the thing is he loves to throw more. He loves to throw balls, make
hoops, etc. I said if he had a book he would most likely throw it.
They said let's try the book. I said that would probably only work
if the bus aid were to sit with him, and read it to him. I didn't
think it would work if she simply handed him the book and walked
away. Well, Thursday morning the aid gave him his book, walked
away, and LJ threw it as far as he could.
So, he was written up for that. *Sigh* I tried to tell them.
It has been very difficult for me. I feel like he is only 4. How
will it be when he is older? How will I handle him as he continues
to grow stronger, bigger, older?
Only by the grace of God, and believe me...He is my strength because
there have been days especially these last 3 weeks that I felt I was
going to crack.
But I know that God will continue to help me and Joe continue to
raise our beautiful son in His way, and he will continue to give us
the grace and strength we need in this whole process. God's mercies
are new every morning. I know I'd be in a loony bin somewhere
without Him. Thank God for God!!!
I'm so thankful for Joe too. This all is very stressful, but Joe is
a wonderful, loving husband and daddy. Without God and Joe and the
support of our families and friends, I definitely would be in that
loony bin.
That all happened last month, in March. Since then, he has spit on
the floor 2 more times. The first time he did it, the principle
called me and said since the new behavior plan had just began we
would wait and see. The last time he spit was on Thursday, the last
day before Spring Break. The principle has called, and she and I
have played phone tag several times but have not had a chance to
talk yet.
I have a feeling he is going to be suspended again, but my questions
are...
How do we get him to stop spitting?
How do we extinguish this behavior?
When Temple Grandin was in town, I believe she said she was a
spitter, and one day her teacher spit in her face and she never spit
again.
I do not want to spit on my son nor have anyone else do that either.
There has to be a way to extinguish the spitting behavior.
I have made a social story that is all about greeting others
appropriately, and LJ loves his book. We also, have a bus rules
page that we go over every morning before he gets on the bus.
Your suggestions and thoughts will be most appreciated on the
spitting issue.
Thanks in advance,
Candie

teaching mands

2007-12-14 07:07:35

I would really encourage all who are trying to teach mands to ensure that
there is an EO that is linked with the mand, not just the stimuli,
otherwise, we're just teaching scripts. For example, asking "how many"
needs to be the MO if you will to getting the item. Trying to contrive Eos
is not a bad thing. My son became a very proficient "question-asker" (too
proficient most would say!) and we found that the most effective way of
doing it is in the NET, trying to leverage his own EOs.
