Hi Everyone,
Tis that time of year again when therapy hours are becoming available!
I'm an ABA/VB therapist with several years experience. I'm

activities (and helping create lesson plans), structured teaching, and
am a highly organized and motivated therapist.
I currently have most mornings and early afternoon slots available. I
have NO afterschool hours or weekends available.
While I'm located in Essex County, I'm willing to travel up to 45
minutes to provide therapy to the right child.

I'm a college psychology student and am looking for work as an ABA/VB
therapist from May - August. I have experience doing various
interventions for children with special needs during the past three
years, but have not worked an intensive ABA/VB program, though I'm
pretty familiar with behavior analysis. I will be going for ABA
training at Beaumont Hospital's HOPE program soon. I'm not exactly
sure what hours I'll be available, but please email me for more
information. Thanks.

street crossing

2007-10-30 01:04:58

Hi all,
I think you should consider the age a NT child learns to cross a
street....they probably start learning at around age 5 and are independent with
the skill
at age 7 or 8 for a non-busy street. For a busy street or highway that
independed street crossing age would be much higher. There is a lot of
judgement
and decision making involved with street crossing so teaching this skill is
difficult. I would consider the child's mental age and I would spend years
prompting and supervising the child with street crossing. As you said, the
skill of
street crossing needs to be 100% mastered and generalized before allowing the
child to do the skill independently.
I do think writing out a task analysis yourself would be a great place to
start....stop 6 inches before the edge of the curb....wait for an adult to stand
next to you....look to the left, to the right and to the left.....if no cars
in sight (I would start on a very quiet street and make the criteria No moving
cars), step off the curb and proceed quickly across the street with the adult.
You could also try social skill homemade picture books and videomodeling to
begin to build this skill.
Good Luck!

I'm looking for a program or task analysis for teaching a child to
cross the street. It's actually quite a complex skill and I sure don't
want to miss anything. (There's no 8/10 trials on this goal!!!) Any
ideas?
Thanks!

Travelling on long distance flight with autistic child

2007-10-27 13:35:52

I have not gone on a plane, I hate flying but do use lots of no Rx things to
calm my son who is always bouncing off walls. First Valerian root works
great, it stinks terribly but you can buy oderless caplets but they CANNOT
be crushed. We have made tea with the powder. I actually have a product
called Serenity that works great, not for sleep but for calm but it is hard
to get so email me privately if you want a list of ingredients or where you
can get it. Hops, camomile, and lavendar work also. You could have some
lavendar oil to rub a tiny amount on your child just for calm, try it first,
it actually bothers me but works like a dream for my child, not sleep but
calm. Also for my son caffeine in the form of strong cold coffee in his soy
milk with choc syrup works when used sporadically. Be careful of caffeine
as in many kids but not all it will act as a stimulant, but for my son it
works to calm. One more thing is that you can buy a liquid melatonin
it is non timed release so if you use it for night time sleep they could
wake up, mine does but it puts him right to sleep. FYI, want more info, we
have done it all as my son tends to scream and run A LOT!!

teaching subtraction

2007-10-27 01:32:42

Hi there,
Just looking for a little advice on teaching an 8 year old
subtraction. At the moment his addition is doing really well, in
fact he whizzes through these sums! However, when presented with a
subtraction sum, he goes into auto pilot and tries to add the
numbers together. I know this is down to not paying attention to the
sign, but I am not sure how to go about changing this.
We have tried many different things... he can easily identify + and -
, but even when we do this immediately before the sum, he will still
add. We have tried using different colours to highlight the sign,
tried formatting the sum in many different ways, but unless we
heavily prompt him form the start to take away then he will add.
Even if we don't leave any extra cubes out, therefore preventing him
from adding anything on, he gets frustrated and starts looking for
blocks to add on, or sits and waits as if he is waiting for us to
give him cubes to continue! He is still using counters when doing
his sums (single cubes/rods representing 10/ 100 square).
Any suggestions are very welcome!!
Thanks in advance,
Susan

2007-10-26 01:24:51

Thanks so much for your input in how to decorate my son's room. Many
great ideas that are going to help my little one to communicate.
I also have a BIG question.
I live in a little town in the middle of nowhere in MT. I been trying
to find resources for early intervention for my son and looks like no
one has ever been trained to teach an autistic child in this state.
That is the info I got from my family support Part C program advisor.
I feel so lost with out knowing what to do, where to go to get trained
and not even a slight hope that our little school can do or bring
something to train and teach my son.
I know that then I have to train my self but I have no idea in what
field to get trained and where to go to do it. And I am confuse about
ABA because some info on the internet told me that ABA can be really
harmful for a mild autistic child like my son, because it can build
anxiety and frustration, resulting in agression.
My son can sit if you ask him, he will repeat words a lot if you ask
him, he doesn't have tantrums at all, very aware and can read
emotions, very loving and affectionate. He doesn't stim or have
repetitive behaviors or rutines, he is very disorganized. His problem
is his speech, he wont carry a conversation or speak in sentences. He
has a voc. of about 150 words, mostly nouns.
He just turned 3 and I don't know what to do, since the doctor didn't
really wanted to have anything to do with my son after she said that
he maybe autistic, she didn't gave me any info or guidence, she only
told me to go with the Part C program and they would know what to do.
Isn't that awful! and she is a Special Developmental Specialist.
I'm here to ask for a little guidence if you can help, I'm desperate
and I know many of you are profesionals who care about autistic
children.
Thank you.
Gris.

I hope its ok to make recommendations for particular resources on this list.
I wanted to share a book I recently purchased a book on E-bay that I'm
thrilled with---called BehaviorSpeak by Newman, K Reeve, S Reeve, and Ryan. Its
a
glossary of ABA terminology in simple, laymen terms. I've been looking for
such a comprehensive glossary for a while. I think this would be a wonderful
resource for parents and students---I'm a new student of ABA and I think it
will be invaluable to me.

Thx Juliet

2007-10-23 04:52:53

Thank you so much Juliet for the reply. I wonder if the intensive years
will ever end for us? To answer . the vocals for things he is really
motivated for tend to stay but sometimes because his motivation is so
unpredictable it is hard to stay with any one mand long enough to really
intensely work on the vocals for less desired things. In terms of his
social connectedness I have to say In this area we feel very blessed. Most
often he is "with us" if you know what I mean, but certainly has times when
he seems to somewhere else. (Lately he is a stim-machine) He has good eye
contact, wants interaction and attention and likes to call his sister to
come and run around and jump with him. He likes ring around the rosey and
songs and lots of rough play. I'm taken back to the day we got the
diagnosis and were told rather coldly that "He considers you nothing more
than a piece of furniture." Looking at him now I feel so lucky that he
approaches us, calls us and his sister to him for attention and interaction,
initiates hugs and kisses and loves to rough house and wrestle with us.
Still he is deeply affected by the disorder and has far to go. He has
upwards of 40 signs .. some stronger than others based on his motivation for
foods, toys, actions, people, activities. They are clear although some of
his signs are unique to him and adapted to his motor ability. We were lucky
before we moved that we had a 40+ hour home program so I had some help . but
as we lost funding, I was forced to step up and put in more time myself.
After this, my mom passed away very suddenly in our home and I eventually
began to feel the burn and subsequently he lost some skills. I'm really
looking forward to him starting a school program because I know he needs to
learn things that would be difficult to teach at home. I will supplement
his school based program with a home program to keep his hours up . but I
look forward to a less intense home environment for the sake of the whole
family's sanity. Again, thank you so much for the response. Again, you are
an inspiration.

VB classroom cross post

2007-10-23 03:31:10

I'm sorry I forgot which list the responses I got came from so wanted to
include it here as well:
Hi list,
Wanted to thank all who so graciously responded to my post on the list and
privately re: VB classroom. Juliet, you are an inspiration and in fact
video of your son's home program was one of my first introductions to VB and
was shown at workshop I attended way back when in NY and I found myself
referring to your website quite a bit. I really appreciate the time you
took to respond in such depth. I suppose I should have given a bit more
info. about my "unique" son and in particular, how he has shown us he learns
and the usefulness of his intensive manding program. My son is largely
non-vocal and not echoic whatsoever (in his ability to respond to a more
formal echoic program). The only time ANY vocals were EVER produced by him
were in the process of an intensive manding program with sign. This was the
ONLYway to get a peep out of him (besides auto-reinforcement procedures
which were used for items he wanted but had no sign for at the moment) The
more signed mands we contrived/captured each day .. the more opportunities I
and others had to differentially reinforce his vocal production directly and
bring them closer to parity. By keeping data on differential reinforcement
procedures and the specific sounds we were getting per mand we could see
that his vocals were getting very close to becoming real full words. If he
wanted a piece of a puzzle, we'd wait until he signed it ... we'd say puzzle
(1st echoic prompt) ... move it closer ... say puzzle again (2nd echoic
prompt) ... just before handing it to him .. again say puzzle (3rd echoic
prompt). We noted after each echoic prompt what he in turn said and over
time the vocals shaped up. The slight delay in reinforcement was a bit
aversive and we found him trying to copy what we were saying more exactly in
order to hurry up the delivery of the reinforcement. He had some things
that he would mand for 40 times in a row ... and although not very
functional in any play sense it gave us the opportunity to work directly on
vocals in the only way he would tolerate. I've seen video of a little girl
who was only interested in putting buttons into a cardboard box .... mom
would have her mand for the buttons over and over until and you could see
her vocals improving over time until at last she learned to say button as
clear as day. Once she got this full word and got that button RIGHT AWAY ..
she saw how powerful it was to really try to say the word more like it was
being said to her and then of course realized the way to get anything is to
say the name of it as best as possible. If my son remotely sensed that a
demand for vocals was coming he would shut down and never ask for the item
again .. it had to be disguised in the process of manding. As for our data
keeping it was very simple, as for collecting numbers on mands we carried
the clickers, one for prompted, one for spontaneous. At the end of the day
when we were no longer working with my son we simply recorded the numbers on
a sheet of paper and later in the evening filled in the graph paper up to
the line of that number ... giving us a visual representation of how well we
were able to contrive/capture his EO. We kept data on the diff.
reinforcement of vocals as well after we handed him the Sr+ we jotted down
what he'd said in the column under "echoic prompt 1" "2" "3" so we were able
to see that he was better able to provide a closer approximation after only
the 1st echoic prompt and then occuring with the mand itself which he
produced before any prompt from us. I'm sorry I'm rambling on ... just
wanted to give a better picture of how we used data to guide his individual
program. Also most mands came quickly under the prompt of only the item
being present and many many were able to be asked for when not in sight ...
and he simply wanted it, but it was hard work but nothing less than what was
required. SHort of reaching down his throat and pulling the sounds/words
out (which I would have if I could have). Oh the joys of
mothering/teaching!

VB Classroom (or is it?)

2007-10-21 22:28:53

Hi,
My family and I relocated to a state which has "Verbal Behavior Classrooms".
I felt extremely lucky to find such a classroom since my 4 year old had been
involved in a very successful home based VB program prior to our move. We
have been fortunate enough to have had my son evaluated by some of the
countries leading experts in autism and received
consultation/reports/recommendations. He is primarily non-vocal and uses
upwards of 40 signs to augment his communication. My son's needs at this
point dictate a very intensive manding program (obviously we want him to be
vocal one day) and certainly assumed that a classroom which refers to
themselves as using a "VB model" would understand this need and implement
this without question. I assumed (again) that a large part of his day
would involve having EO's contrived and mands tallied using clickers ...
having those #'s recorded and graphed (You know how it goes). Our IEP
process was pleasant and I felt comfortable that I'd at last found a place
who shared the same ideas as I do in regards to emphasizing Skinner's
Analysis, the use of the ABLLS etc. However, after reading through a list of
very lofty goals for a non-vocal child (using 3 word phrases) ... no where
in the IEP they drafted did it mention tallying mands or increasing
vocalization. When I asked if they tallied mands I was told "We do for kids
who mand a lot ... otherwise no" (RED FLAG). Isn't the reason to tally is
to keep yourself in check that enough opportunities are being contrived and
to track that the numbers are increasing and becoming spontaneous? I was
told they take a sampling every now and then with counters but otherwise no
data is taken on this on a daily basis and it would be "too much work" for
them to do that and certainly "no way we could get that kind of data to you
on a daily basis" (when I asked for numbers to be sent home each day).
Basically I was told "We don't do that" (won't do that) There aren't
enough naturally occuring instances in life for my son to simply mand on his
own ... it still has to be contrived. (and it's a workout!!!) For me he
was manding 700-1000 times a day at his best and his vocals were coming
along. What to do now? Put him in such a class where the very heart of the
model seems to not be implemented? I'd love any input from anyone w/
suggestions on how to proceed. Sorry so long. Mom's at the end of the
rope!

Verbal Behavior Workshop

2007-10-21 00:18:44

Space Still Available
TEACHING VERBAL BEHAVIOR
IN THE CLASSROOM:
AN OVERVIEW
Using the analysis of language as a behavior that is under the
influence of the principles of operant conditioning provides a viable
model for helping children with language deficits. Research has
demonstrated that the application of these principles leads to the
development of functional communication skills, reduction in problem
behavior, and an increase in social initiations.
Presenter: Thomas M. Caffrey, M.Ed., completed an undergraduate
degree in Education from Arizona State University and a Masters
degree in Education from Georgian Court College, where he was awarded
the Project of Distinction for his work on training paraprofessionals
to work with children with autism. In addition, he completed
graduate coursework in behavior analysis from Penn State University
and is now finishing the requirements leading to certification as a
behavior analyst.
This workshop will illustrate through extensive use of video how the
principles of ABA that emphasize the teaching of verbal behavior are
being applied effectively in classroom settings to teach children
with autism language and other important skills. Specifically,
participants will learn strategies to:
æ Build rapport with the learner
æ Select the most appropriate form of communication for a child
æ Capture and contrive motivation
æ Teach functional communication skills (manding)
æ Utilize behavioral principles to reduce and manage problem
behavior
æ Provide individual and group instruction in the natural
environment (NET)
æ Transition learners from NET to intensive teaching (DTT)
æ Develop basic teaching templates for early, intermediate, and
advanced learners

Teaching Numbers

2007-10-20 07:17:02

Yes, receptively identify them first.
Make small cards with 1, 11 and 21 written on it. Put all three cards in
front
of the child.
Therapist: Touch 1
Child touches it
Touch 11
Child touches it
Touch 21.. and so on.
Repeat the same trial until the child masters the receptive
identification.
Then link it to expressive .
Touch 1. Child touches 1.
Therapist: What number?
Child: 'One".
Hope it helps.

Thought that some might be interested in the below
Joe
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Letter from âBrother to Brotherâ on Thursday, February 24,
2005
Dear Representative Pallone:
It is budget time again and it appears that the leadership of
this Great Commonwealth is once again attempting to solve
their budget woes on the backs of thousands of Handicapped
Pennsylvanians that do not have the ability to speak out and
defend themselves. Why do we consistently wage our budget
attacks on the neediest and most helpless residents of this
great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania ?
As the parent of an twelve year old Autistic Child, and as
your brother, I am writing to ask you to strenuously oppose
Governor Rendell's proposed budget which seeks to: "Implement
a plan of cost sharing under which higher income families
with disabled children eligible for Medical Assistance would
be required to pay a monthly premium, based on a sliding
scale;" this cost sharing plan will effect thousands of
Pennsylvanian's and include your nephew and my son. My hope
is that you won't stop with a strenuous opposition, but you
will become a VERY VOCAL Leader, ADVOCATE and representatives
of our children and our families in this Commonwealth.
The Governor's Budget proposes placing a sliding scale,
income based Co-Pay on the eligibility for MA - Specifically,
the proposal would begin to require co-pays for families
above $50,000 of income. Presumably, the co-pay scale would
be less for large families, and lower forsmaller families
and the proposal will go into effect with the 2005/2006
budget.
Services currently paid for under MA include, but are not
limited to:
1. Behavioral Therapies (wraparound)
2. Medical Therapies (speech therapy, occupational therapy,
physical therapy)
3. Essential medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, chair
lifts, hearing aids, etc.
4. Prescriptions
5. Nutritional supplements
Our family has determined that the cost of privately
purchasing theservices, which Bobby desperately requires,
will be a minimum of $90,000 per year, every year (costs most
probably will go over the $100,000 mark - my estimate is
conservative). The cost of the co-pay along with MANY other
out of pocket costs associated with a disabled child would
clearly have a catastrophic impact upon our family's ability
to care for Bobby as well as the basic needs of the family.
Not only would there be loss of services for the children,
but it would also effect the employment of thousands of
Pennsylvanians that are employed as therapists, aids and
administrators of the programs. Either of the effects are
not positive for Pennsylvanians.
As you are very aware, Bobby was diagnosed as Autistic at the
early age of 2. Autism is a neurobiological disorder of the
brain that affects as many as one in every 150 children born
every day. The cause of Autism has not been determined and
there is no cure. Although there is not a cure, it should be
noted that the science and research shows that the programs
that are paid for and funded by MA are the " State of the
Art " treatment and the most promising methodology for a cure
and/or positive outcome. The behavioral and therapeutic
interventions have proven ENORMOUSLY effective in enabling
our children to speak, interact with others and participate
meaningfully in school and as citizens. You, of all people,
have seen the DRAMATIC and LASTING effects that Therapy and
intervention has had for Bobby.
I ask you to think back on how your nephew, Bobby, started as
an avoidance little boy who was hard to engage and had little
family interaction â all symptoms of Autism. Now, fast
forward to today and think about and reflect on how his
extraordinary effort and the hard work of his family and
therapy team has helped him progress into a child who can
communicate his needs and enjoy the company of family
members, friends and classmates. Truly, he has blossomed into
a delightful little boy that loves the attention of friends
and family as he shows off his new skills for us. His
progress has been somewhat miraculous and very promising for
all of us. Everyday we pray for more progress and wish for a
miracle to cure him of this hideous condition. At the very
least, we wish and hope for Bobby to have the power of a more
meaningful vocabulary and speech along with the ability to
have loving and reciprocal relations. We have seen a great
deal of progress towards our goals and you can raise
testimony to his progress in reading, counting, math and
other important and necessary subjects of study in the school
curriculum and the home and natural environment.
If the Governor's budget is passed, we will be faced with two
options:
1. Family Bankruptcy as a result of privately attempting to
pay for Bobby's medical and therapeutic needs, Or
2. Abandoning the treatment that has brought him so far and
NOTHING for him in the public School Environment -- In a very
real sense we will be abandoning a child that has a ton of
hope and potential as a SON, Nephew, grandson and brother.
The options are truly unacceptable and honestly despicable.
They are options that NO Pennsylvania family should be forced
to face, regardless of income. By way of this e-mail, I am
asking you and urging you to forward this information to
EVERY HOUSE member (both sides of the aisle) on your e-mail
list and copy the Governor and his budget Secretary. I have
taken the liberty of copying Senator Sean Logan, Senator
Orie, Senator White, Representative/Minority Leader DeWeese,
Representative DeLuca, Bob Kline from Senator Mellow's
office, Bob Billstone from Senator Costa's office and John
Fulton from Representative Lescovitz's office on this e-mail
and I also will ask them to send this to EVERY SENATOR (both
sides of the aisle)on your internal e-mail mailbox along with
the Governor and his budget Secretary.
Please don't take this note lightly, and I would appreciate
if you copied me on your forwarded note to your colleagues. I
am asking and pleading that the Governor of this Great
Commonwealth and the members of the House and Senate not
allow a budget that will HANDICAP BOBBY and Handicap
thousands of Pennsylvania's children ALL OVER AGAIN !
I look forward to being copied on your forwarded note to your
colleagues and we all thank you for your support on this very
important matter.
Your brother,
Robert M. Pallone, Sr.+

teaching numbers

Hi,
My son had the same problem. What we did was take
out sets 1,11,21 and 2,12,22 etc and put it in front of
him - one set at a time. We stared with receptive "touch 1, touch 21,
touch 11" etc.
Then we linked receptive to expressive - what number?
He was soon able to distinguish between them. Hope it helps.

You might try pairing sign with tact to teach the numbers--this helped my
daughter--and sometimes we'd alter the sign a little to make sure looked
different from each other--so when presenting 3 you would sign 3 and say 3 for
your
prompt--and so on with other numbers.
Hope this helps.

Teaching learners about God

2007-10-17 22:56:27

Christine,
Evy has always done an excellent job learning from videos. Veggietales
in particular have helped us reinforce the specific simple religious
teachings that Evy has learned at home. Most of our earliest religious
lessons have started with "You know how Bob the Tomato decided to..."
We approach moral/social lessons from a very simplistic Judeo-Christian
background. We talk about God openly, and that he wants us to obey
parents, teachers and to always choose the right. We talk about what
is right and wrong against a simple moral framework. The nice thing
about religious principles I find is that they can be adapted for the
weakest of the weak--assuming you have a communication framework
wherein to teach. Sometimes, kindergardeners have a better
understanding of right and wrong than adults, don't you think? We
teach (and this one I think is critical) that he can choose to DISobey
ANYONE who is telling him to do something that is wrong or against
God's teachings, be they adult, parent or teacher. I can't tell you
how funny it is to have a four year old tell you very emphatically that
you are disobeying God! Anyhow, I think it is important to teach the
fundamentals of your faith, whatever it may be, as early as it can be
understood.

Vibrating timers

Subject: where to buy a vibrating timer/pager
Hello! It's me AGAIN! Thank you for all the responses to the
behaviorist interview questions for the family I work with. They
really appreciate the input!
I've been combing the web looking for vibrating timers which would
be small enough to be hidden. It would be for a parent who needs
reminders to give her son more verbal praise throughout the day. I
keep on coming across vibrating pill reminder timers. However, they
are costly and look complicated. Does anyone have any experience
with these timers or know of a site/company which has simple ones?
Thank you again,
Sandy :)

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but you can go to
pottymd.com or bedwettingstore.com and they have vibrating timer/watches that
can be
set to go off at a set interval and don't need to be reset each time. These
websites sell supplies for bedwetting and other incontinence problems. No
financial interest in either.

to RR he is back to square 1 .He makes this pattern of picking up
the cards from the same side Some times even the prompts does not
work I have tried by changing the prompting method
[proximity, visual.HOH] and none works He always take it from the
same side [and for him the prefferd side changes from time to time
one week it would be the left the next week it would be the

Taking suggestions for summer program

2007-10-14 00:01:11

I haven't been here in forever, but I've started to look ahead to
summer and want to put together some sort of informal program for my
son. He's recently turned 7 and doing well in a private kindergarten
(held one year) without any special assistance. Last summer we did
VBA and it helped with beginning question asking etc. He's still not
what I would call completely conversational. He can tell me a few
things about his day (what he had for lunch, what letter they talked
about, etc) but we need to get to the next level. We're still
working on How and Why which is starting to get better. I also want
to incorporate social stories, proper school behavior (playing school
perhaps?),RDI, critical thinking skills and a preview of any abstract
concepts which may be introduced in first grade.
Does anyone have any suggestions for getting that conversation
going? We've tried NET with videos but he isn't a video watcher and
detested doing that! I'm hoping to make things less informal and
more fun this year.
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for CD-ROMS that
incorporate any of the things that I want to work on? Does anyone
have any experience with Rosetta Stone?
Thanks,
Vicki

TX Professionals committed to teaching children with autism to communicate

2007-10-12 19:42:46

Texas Professionals Committed to Teaching Children with Autism to
Communicate
January 24, 2005 - Plano, Texas
What a way to kick off the New Year! The North Texas Autism Education
Center (NTAEC) and the Wayman Learning Center welcomed 225 parents and
professionals to their 3-day workshop at SMU last week. This workshop,
"Teaching Communication Skills to Children with Autism" was presented by
Vince Carbone, Ed.D, Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), from New York.
Dr. Carbone's workshop is presented only a few times a year, all over the
world. This was the first time in 5 years he has presented it in North
Texas.
Over 150 Texas professionals were in attendance representing 5 Education
Service Centers (ESCs), 31 school districts, and 5 Early Childhood
Intervention (ECI) agencies. Similar professionals traveled from Arkansas,
Florida, Kansas, Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and
Virginia to attend the workshop. The attendees gave an overwhelming
"Excellent" in their evaluations and hope to see Dr. Carbone present again
in Texas in the near future! Certified Teachers wrote "wish it was longer -
we have so much to learn". And "we hope more professionals (particularly
administrators and special education directors who are not BCBAs yet) will
be able to attend the next workshop." Several ESC professionals asked to
schedule similar training in their own region and are interested in becoming
BCBAs themselves. ECI professionals wrote "This approach (ABA with
Skinner's Analysis of Verbal Behavior) makes a lot of sense." Certified
Teachers, Speech-Language Pathologists, and Early Intervention Specialists
all expressed the same desire for our state to "look at this approach more
seriously."
One of our goals at NTAEC is to increase autism and ABA awareness with our
elected officials. Last week they were busy with Inauguration activities
but still found time to welcome and thank our professionals for attending
this important training. U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions wrote "Your
presence at this workshop helps to ensure that the most fragile members of
our society are continually given the opportunity to become productive
members of society. Thank you for coming together to make a positive
difference for those who live with disabilities." State Senator Florence
Shapiro wrote "We must use every resource available to offer all students
the highest quality education. Thank you for taking the time to assist the
children of Texas." Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn wrote to the NTAEC
"I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to your fine organization
for your efforts to maximize the potential for autistic children across this
state and nation."
A huge THANK YOU goes out to all our volunteers for working hard to make
this workshop a huge success. Thanks also to Autism Publications for
allowing our attendees to purchase the Sundberg and Partington books at a
10% discount. And last but not least thanks to Steph Hulshof, BCABA, for
assisting Dr. Carbone and answering the many questions from our attendees!
We look forward to hosting FREE follow-up workshops in Plano for both
parents and professionals. Announcements coming soon!

Teaching Emotions Video

2007-10-11 21:49:33

NEW VIDEO RELEASE:
Concept Expansion Films has just released the TEACHING EMOTIONS VIDEO.
This video is a powerful tool for professionals and parents alike to assess
and teach labels for emotions to persons with Autism-Spectrum Disorders and
other developmental delays. Great for learners of all levels, including
those with Aspergers. Emotions are better displayed in a video format than
on stagnant picture cards. The video contains scenes that build into the
emotion (cause and effect), so you can also discuss "why" the person feels a
certain way. The video is designed to allow for various teaching techniques
to be used, but the format is based on ABA-researched procedures. The video
includes assessment and acquisition sheets, so you can monitor your
learner's progress. The length of the scenes is such that you won't have to
rewind or pause the video during teaching.
The video complements the ABLLS(Copyrighted) [Assessment of Basic Language
and Learning Skills] skill "G39 - Labels emotions of others," but is also
very useful for asking "why," "who," "which," and "where" questions.
Our videos have recently gained an endorsement from Dr. Vincent J. Carbone.
Visit our website to read this and to learn more about the TEACHING EMOTIONS
VIDEO and the TEACHING ACTIONS VIDEO SERIES.
Feel free to contact me with any questions.

verbal behavior classrooms nj district programs not private

2007-10-11 08:38:05

hello,
I am writing today to see if anybody knows where (which school
districts) offer verbal behavior in their classrooms. Currently we
live in Parsippany and we are going tough a life change.
History long story short : We moved here to NJ 2 years ago with our
non verbal son, and today he is verbal. Thanks to the professionals
that have worked with us the last 2 years.
My husband is in the Army (all of you have spoken to me at one time
or another) and we are on orders to go to back to Germany (the place
we came from where I watched Chris deteriorate in front of my eyes
and showed no improvement for 13 months) The Army is not giving us
any choices as far as were we can be stationed we have also tried
to get a compassionate reassignment but to no avail. So my husband
has decided to leave the Army after 11 years in order to get our son
to his best developmental level (Chris turns 5 in February.)
The cost of living in Parsippany is just to darn much especially if
we plan to settle down here. moving south were the cost of living is
less is an option but we need some guidance as to where for programs
change from state to state school district to school district.
Tino my husband goes on terminal leave 24 January and once that date
comes there is no turning back, so your guidance would be very
helpful.
thanks
Janet Santiago
please feel free to forward if you think it would be helpful.

VB workshop in Rochester, NY March 30, 31

2007-10-10 20:23:24

The Greater Rochester Chapter of S.A.F.E
is proud to present
TEACHING VERBAL BEHAVIOR
IN THE CLASSROOM:
AN OVERVIEW
Using the analysis of language as a behavior that is under the influence of the
principles of operant conditioning provides a viable model for helping children
with language deficits. Research has demonstrated that the application of these
principles leads to the development of functional communication skills,
reduction in problem behavior, and an increase in social initiations.
Presenter: Thomas M. Caffrey, M.Ed., completed an undergraduate degree in
Education from Arizona State University and a Masters degree in Education from
Georgian Court College, where he was awarded the Project of Distinction for his
work on training paraprofessionals to work with children with autism. In
addition, he completed graduate coursework in behavior analysis from Penn State
University and is now finishing the requirements leading to certification as a
behavior analyst.
This workshop will illustrate through extensive use of video how the principles
of ABA that emphasize the teaching of verbal behavior are being applied
effectively in classroom settings to teach children with autism language and
other important skills. Specifically, participants will learn strategies to:
v Build rapport with the learner
v Select the most appropriate form of communication for a child
v Capture and contrive motivation
v Teach functional communication skills (manding)
v Utilize behavioral principles to reduce and manage problem behavior
v Provide individual and group instruction in the natural environment
(NET)
v Transition learners from NET to intensive teaching (DTT)
v Develop basic teaching templates for early, intermediate, and advanced
learners
Educational Support is our goal. Greater Rochester SAFE is the place to find
out how to make next week BETTER for everyone involved! Knowledge is the key to
success.

VB Workshop in Charlotte, NC

2007-10-09 12:05:51

Promoting Functional Communication And Interactions In Children With Autism
Presented by: Tammi Kasper, CCC-SLP/BCaBA
Where: Charlotte, NC Airport Sheraton
When: March 11, 2005
More info:
http://www.nss-nrs.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/NSS.woa/wa/Seminars/detail?id=1000439
Therapists are often faced with difficult cases in which valuable therapy
time is spent addressing challenging behaviors such as avoidance, aggression, or
self-stimulation. Non-verbal children or children with limited functional
communication present a special challenge. Often, children with autism or other
developmental disabilities have a very restricted range of interests or appear
to quickly lose interest in foods/toys/activities. Participants in this seminar
will learn to analyze behaviors and implement valuable strategies to reduce
problem behaviors during teaching. Strategies to develop and maintain a wider
variety of interests will also be shared. Emphasis will be placed on use of
Skinner's behavioral classification of language (as applied by Sundberg,
Partington, Carbone, and others) which refocuses and refines teaching of
requesting.
Methods for effective transfer of skills from imitative to spontaneous
requesting will be presented, viewed via videotape, and practiced. Procedures to
maintain cooperation and systematically shape functional verbal and/or manual
communicationin children with limited verbal and motor imitation will be
addressed.
Application of Kaufman's hierarchy of vocalizations and use of simplified
"word shells" with this population will also be explored.
