Teaching the child with autism to read and to do math

2007-09-30 12:59:51

I could be wrong but I believe that you have to teach the concept with of
math with manipulatives. The addition is easy, it is the multiplication that
takes some thought. If the child understands the concept of a nickel, use
three nickels, if not it is back to pennies (15) and 3 apples. Place the
money in front of the apples and this will more or less give the concept of
multiplication. As far as reading, there is a sight that I am using to help
with phonics it is called learn to read and is for K-1. It actually gives
the visual with the sound and seems to be helping my child that was left so
far behind in school that I had to take him out.

on the Today Show, but there are obvious limitations to what you can accomplish
in six minutes, whereas the FEAT conference will provide parents with a lot
of quality, usable info. "

teaching math

2007-09-29 22:28:24

Hello all, I have not written lately due to the craziness within our home.
(Zachary now has his service dog, Rusty. He is wonderful...but that is a
different topic. If you would like information, please email me privately.
rmiga@...)
Now, for my question....
We are having difficulty getting Zachary to understand math. He has memorized
his times tables (as we all did when we were young....) however, he has no idea
of what it is that he has memorized (just as we did when we were young...) So
why did we do it? I do not know.
I would love to hear from others regarding how they are teaching math using
DTT-NET. Any resources, references, etc would be greatly appreciated. (FYI,
Zach is 10 yo and in 4th grade now...for those who are questioning the
developmental appropriateness and levels of teaching, etc.)
I am leaning towards how you would use multiplication with money (an apple costs
5 cents, 3 apples would cost X). However, Zach does not get it at all.... so
any suggestions on what others have done would be great.
Thanks in advance. Rhonda

Teaching the child with autism to read and to do math

2007-09-29 11:37:54

Hi all,
Any of you have been using Glenn Doman method to teach
your children with autism to read and to do math? I
saw a two families in my country (I live in Vietnam)
teaching their kids with autism to read and to do math
by using words flashcards (whole words or phrases) and
dot cards. One of the mothers learnt this method from
The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential
in America. As claimed by the parents, their children
are able to do very complicated calculations like
[(150+30) x 80] : (50 + 25) etc... However, I
suspected that the children would never understand the
concepts of reading and math. They only chose the
correct response cards by rote. Any comment on this
method?
If the above isnt the correct method to teach our
kids with autism, any other methods are you using? I
saw some posts about distar reading and distar math
books. Are they the books that we should refer to in
order to teach math and reading? If not, what books
should I read? I am so confused. Please advise.
Thanks in advance

teaching receptive first to get expressive

2007-09-29 08:44:13

hi all
i have a 5 1/2 year old who has been in program since age 18
months. I posted on this before and would like further input. We
are having tremendous gains with receptive language (receptive id
with 2 pictures in front of him, touch ___). We are moving to sign
as a response form for this. My son has seizures which seem to be
under great control but still lots of abnormal impulses, 72 hour EEG
abnormal throughout. He has almost no expressive language despite
efforts with sign and PECS after 4 years of work. Dont need to know
that in MOST CASES YOU WOULD SAY DONT TEACH TACTS BUT I AM AND
WILL!! So, is it possible that there are still abnormal impulses in
expressive area of brain and not receptive? And has anyone else had
experience with this and gotten more expressive language via
receptive. Any input would be appreciated. you may email me
privately as well. mainecollier@...

Why question contrived situations

2007-09-28 17:25:31

Hello! I am starting to teach my son to ask "Why ?'s" and am finding
it harder to come up with appropriate situations than the
other "Wh's". If anyone has suggestions of what worked for them, I
would be very appreciative!
Also, I am trying to think of ways to prompt conversation
(commenting). I remember from Carbone workshop#4 a video of one of
the therapists talking to a child and using sentences that would
prompt the child to comment ( a previously mastered
tact/intraverbal). These kind of situations are so much harder than
the rote memorization at the table. Any ideas for conversation would
also be sooo helpful. Thanks so much.

speech therapist needed

2007-09-28 00:18:10

Hi,
I am new to the group and live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I need a
speech therapist for my three year old. He is in an ABA program and
is doing well with the 'academics' but need serious help with
producing spoken language.
I need a speech therapist who has experience working with autistic
children and has a background in either Lovaas style ABA or at
Verbal Behavior. At this point, I would actually prefer the later
since we are beginning to think he needs more VB than Lovaas.
Please send any referals, ideas to my private email. Thanks so much.

Toe Walking

2007-09-26 14:19:10

Hi Folks,
Once again I find myself coming to your collective knowlege and experience for
help for one of my families.
We have a 5 year old boy who is walking on his toes. Not always but, usually
when he is stimming or very excited.
Because of this, the German school district has decided that it would be
appropriate for him to wear heavy metal plated shoe insoles that force his feet
to stay flat on the ground. These insoles weigh him down and alter his walking
pattern. His parents are not excited about them as they make an otherwise very
healthy and athletic boy walk like a robot.
I have heard or seen no evidence that these insoles work for any child and would
be interested in knowing if anyone else has an informed opinion on the subject.
I worry about the effects they may have on his knees and ankles, not to mention
self esteem.
I personally feel that he is just not aware of the difference and if given a
good reason to remember to walk on his whole foot (reinforcement etc.) that he
would likely have the reason he needs to attend to the issue and correct it
himself.
Can anyone please share your thoughts with me on this either privately or over
the group?
We thankfully await your help.

TFFC reversal question

2007-09-23 18:21:13

What sort of prompt other than echoic prompts can be used for teaching the first
reversals?
For instance we have taught:
"What do you cut with? SCISSORS "
-this was taught with a tact to TFFC transfer:
"What is it?"(picture of scissors held up) SCISSORS
"What do you cut with?" (picture of scissors held up)SCISSORS
But what materials can be used to prompt the reversal "What do you do with
scissors?" CUT WITH THEM
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Mary Elizabeth

The Nexus School presents "Autism in the Family:Perspectives from Within (PA)

The Nexus School
Presents
Autism in the Family: Perspectives from Within
Featuring
Stephen Shore & Dr. Robert Naseef
Friday, October 29, 2004
9:00 am -1:00 pm
St. Johnâs Episcopal Church
1333 Old Welsh Road
Huntingdon Valley, PA
About Stephen Shore -- Diagnosed with "atypical development with strong
autistic tendencies" and nonverbal until four years old, Stephen was once
recommended for residential placement. Because his parents believed in him, they
rejected that idea. Stephen is now completing his doctoral degree in special
education at Boston University with a focus on helping people on the autism
spectrum. Stephen consults internationally on issues pertinent to education,
relationships, employment, advocacy, and disclosure as discussed in his book
âBeyond
the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndromeâ and the
recently released, âAsk and Tell: Self-Advocacy and Disclosure for People on
the
Autism Spectrumâ. His ability to articulate his experiences clearly and with
humor enable him to serve as an interpreter of the autistic experience including
his strong sensitivities that are the residue of his earlier autism.
About Robert Naseef -- Bob is a psychologist in independent practice in
Philadelphia, specializing in families of children with special needs. He is
the
author of âSpecial Children, Challenged Parents: The Struggles and Rewards of
Parenting a Child With a Disabilityâ, and is
himself, the father of an adult child with autism. Through his experiences as
both a parent and as a professional, Bob understands the trials, the
heartache, and the emotionally charged path that special families must travel in
order
to find acceptance and joy.
Together, Stephen Shore and Robert Naseef serve as both a beacon of hope and
a model of acceptance. They combine their experiences and insights in a
unique and special way. You will laugh, cry, and reflect upon your own
experiences. Whether you are a family member or someone who works with autistic
individuals, you will leave refreshed, enlightened and energized. Don't miss it.

What is the job description of a Consultant?

2007-09-20 16:45:56

Hi Everyone,
The importance of having a qualified consultant in charge of a program is
stressed over and over again. The qualifications are on the BACB and ABA autism
SIG site.
I come from a state where there is a grand total of 7 BAs; an improvement over 4
years ago, when there was 1. Two of those people only serve in special
situations, 4 of those people only work in schools with specific age groups. 1
is on mommy leave. The only person that sets up home programs and provides
on-going supervision is not certified. All of them are at the northern tip of
the state, meaning that lots of people do not have a BA/consultant within 100
miles+ of them.
There is a question I would like to ask---there look to be a fair number of pros
and experienced parents on this list and I would like to clearly know.
The question: What is the job description of a consultant? Esp. if that person
is the director of a home program, and not just on-call for a particular
behavioral issue. How are the expectations different if the only certified
person you can get is from out of state? Does it matter; should the expectations
be the same?
I just got my first real live consultant--long distance and out of state--we
were excited at finally being able to do/afford the right thing and have the
professional backing. We checked the credentials, we interviewed, we did
everything that we were supposed to and ask.
After 2 days and $2000 we were left with a list from the ABLLS and an email
address.
I just sent an email because we were stuck on programs not working to
expectations--the response--essentially, I will deal with it on my next visit 6
weeks from now. The visits can only be managed every 3 months because of
caseload. This was disillusioning, and I would like to believe not the way that
it is supposed to work.
Please restore my faith in the field--esp. those of you who are long-distance
consultants. Tell me how it is supposed to work.
Sincerest thanks,
Regina F

I believe in Applied Behavior Analysis.

Dan Marino Foundation Launches First Web Channel for Autism
www.childnett.tv
1 September 2004
The Dan Marino Foundation has recently launched Childnett.tv, the
first
24-hour web channel dedicated to families living with autism and
other
neurological disorders.
Childnett.tv is an internet access web channel that broadcasts
interactive
programming 24 hours a day, seven days week via the internet. The
lineup
includes streaming video related to autism and other neurological
disorders.
The mission of Childnett.tv is to reach out globally to families,
clinicians
and educators, connecting them through the internet, to information
related to autism and other neurological disorders.
NAAR and the Dan Marino Foundation recently co-produced a new
program on
Childnett.tv featuring Dr. Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, of McMaster
University in
Hamilton, Ontario. The program focuses on early detection of autism
and
Dr.Zwaigenbaum's infant sibling research, which is supported by NAAR
and
the Dan Marino Foundation.

In addition to Dr. Zwaigenbaum, Childnett.tv currently features other
NAAR-funded researchers such as Dr. Isabel Rapin, of Albert Einstein
College of Medicine and Dr. Wendy Stone, of Vanderbilt University,
who each
serve as mentors to NAAR fellows. Also, former Scientific Advisory
Board
member Roberto Tuchman hosts a program on the web channel, as do NAAR
Honorary Board members Temple Grandin and, of course, Dan Marino. In
addition, NAAR Trustee Dr. Michael Alessandri serves as clinical
advisor to
Childnett.tv.
On Childnett.tv, families, clinicians and educators can witness the
latest
therapies and treatments, seminars, as well as personal stories-all
for
free. The Dan Marino Foundation is funding this dynamic initiative to
improve the lives of families around the world. It is the
Foundation's
hope the information broadcast on the website will help ensure every
child
with developmental disabilities reaches his or her highest potential.
NAAR congratulates the Dan Marino Foundation on the launch of this
new
resource for the autism community and looks forward to developing
additional research-based content for Childnett.tv.

Talking to objects

2007-09-20 00:52:46

we recently took our new son home after picking him up from a foster
placement. They told us he has Autism but we were shocked at some
of the things that he does.
One question I have is that he will put an object on the floor dance
around it and seemingly talk to it babbling non stop. Any insight
on this? Thanks

Therapist Charged with Beating Autistic Child, 4 years old

2007-09-19 12:17:39

Therapist charged with beating autistic child, 4
Parents secretly videotaped a session with woman, authorities say
Saturday, September 04, 2004
BY BILL SWAYZE
Star-Ledger Staff
A therapist hired by a Long Hill Township couple to teach their 4-year-old
autistic son in
their home was charged with beating and sexually assaulting the boy after his
parents secretly
videotaped a session in their basement, Morris County authorities said
yesterday.
Christine Mischenko, a 23-year-old Middletown behavior therapist working with
the boy since
January 2003, is charged with kicking and punching the boy in the head,
shaking him by the
ears, lifting him off the floor by his hair and squeezing and pulling the
boy's genitals,
Morris County Prosecutor Michael Rubbinaccio said.
The parents watched the tape Wednesday night, after Mischenko went home. They
immediately
called police.
Mischenko was arrested at 4 a.m. Thursday at her home. She lives with her
parents, who were out
of town at the time.
Mischenko was charged with second-degree sexual assault, child endangerment
and third-degree
aggravated assault. She remains in the county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail
and faces a maximum
10-year prison sentence, Rubbinaccio said.
Rubbinaccio said the videotape showed more than two hours of disturbing
violence. The boy
barely talks, weaving together a couple of words at a time and using sign
language to
communicate. "She is sadistic and cruel," he said of Mischenko.
The boy's father agreed. "It is a nightmare. I never thought that someone we
trusted and let
into our home would do something like this," the 41-year-old father said.
"When we watched that
tape Wednesday my wife cried, saying, 'How can she do that to our baby?' I
got so disgusted."
But the woman's father, George Mischenko, said his daughter would never hurt
a child. "She is a
good person. She doesn't abuse kids. It's unfair what they are saying about
her," George
Mischenko said.
Christine Mischenko, however, admitted to the charges, plus spraying the
victim in the face
with an unknown liquid in a hypodermic needle, according to Long Hill police
Detective Sgt.
Sean Brown's arrest affidavit. She admitted to the abuse not only on
Wednesday, but for the
past two weeks, the affidavit states.
The boy's father and mother said that two weeks ago they noticed a rash on
their son's hands
and purple bruises on his earlobes. When the therapist showed up at the
house, the boy would
hug his mother, not wanting to go to the basement, the father said. The
parents asked Mischenko
about the rash and bruises, but didn't get an explanation, they said.
The father bought a $300 wireless video surveillance camera with a lens the
size of a pinhead.
He placed it on a bookshelf in the basement and, on Wednesday, recorded the
session. The boy's
mother was home at the time. Though the tape shows the boy screaming, he
occasionally did that,
so that didn't alarm the boy's mother, Rubbinaccio said.
Mischenko was employed by Neptune-based New Horizons in Autism, a nonprofit
agency that offers
residential, vocational, family support and behavior therapy programs. It has
contracts with
some 20 school districts, charging $65 an hour for services.
Her boss, executive director Michele Goodman, said, "I'm appalled at her. My
concern is for
that child."
Mischenko, who did not need certification to do the job, has worked with
other autistic
children and was never accused of abusing them, Goodman said. She was being
groomed for a new
position, and was only working with the Long Hill boy twice a week for two
hours. She was fired
yesterday, Goodman said.
The boy attends the local school system, which covered the cost of therapy to
supplement his
skills until he attended school full time in May. The boy's parents then
agreed to hire
Mischenko on their own.
The boy's parents, who also have an older son, said the autistic boy was
treated and released
from a local hospital.
"Our heart was broken when we learned he was autistic, and whatever was left
was shredded when
we saw that tape," his mother said.

Velcro Shoes

2007-09-19 04:27:27

Hi There,
Just a quick note to let you know that I found some great Velcro shoes for
my son at the New Balance online store: www.newbalancetoronto.ca (I did see
a link on the website for US shoppers as well)
As my son's feet become bigger, I have found it to be more and more
difficult to find velcro-fastened shoes. (We've done a shoe-tying program a
couple of times without much success.)
Just thought I'd let those of you in the same boat know that they have a few
different varieties. For men's sizes, look under "walking shoes".

Verbal Behavior Teacher

2007-09-18 16:01:54

Hi, my name is Cyndi Gerlach and I am a parent of two children on the
spectrum. We have been successful in creating a preschool classroom
using Verbal Behavior here in North Vancouver British Columbia and as
far as I know this will be the first classroom of its kind in Canada.
I was wondering if there is a preschool teacher that is running a
program like this that may be able to help support our preschool
teacher. As this is new to us here in BC, she would like to have
contact with another teacher to help guide her with practical
classroom strategies. We have two wonderful consultants who are BCBA
and BCABA trained, but from a preschool teachers perspective, she
would like to have contact with another preschool teacher.
If there is a preschool teacher out there that can help, please email
me directly and I will have her contact you directly.
Thanks

Teaching method for WH-discrimination

appreciate any suggestions or words of advice!

video offer from Sarah's mom

2007-09-18 02:12:53

Hi everyone. We have a 11 yr old daughter that has a home based VB program
about 30-35 hours per week. Sarah has had an ABA program since she was 3 yrs
old. Around the age of 5yrs we started using VB and she has made some nice
progress. All of her program is completed at home with 1 on 1 instruction. Dr
Carbone is our consultant and we have one therapist in the afternoons. I teach
in the mornings.
We have made videos of her sessions in the past and mailed to those who
thought they might help them. We've started making them again. We just video
our
current sessions and mail out as requested. They are intended to show pace of
instruction; mixing and varying tasks; reinforcement schedules; NET; and just
to give an overall view of what a good program looks like. We are also doing
a lot of intraverbal "webbing" in our sessions at this time.
If you would like a video please email me with your mailing address and we
will send you one. There is no cost--just hope it helps. Each video is made as
requested--sometimes it takes a little while to fill all the requests. I
keep a notebook with each request in it so we will get to all of you.
Hope to hear from you. Please email requests to me privately so we don't clog
up the list.

VB for older kids

2007-09-17 05:37:44

We started using VB with my grandson when he was 9. He had no communication
skills and started manding immediately. He has made rapid progress and the
majority of his therapy is done by me. I have custody and he gained from no
academic skills when we started to having 1st through 6 th grade skills by
the end of the second year. We are having to introduce other skills except
what is on the ABLLS as he is so far behind thanks to inexperienced
professionals in the school district that have no idea what an operant
behavior is.

VB Consultant needed

2007-09-17 04:01:43

This past Monday, 8/16 our consultant came for his visit and told us
he has accepted a position elsewhere and it will be his last day.
He has been with us only a number of months, has gotten us very
excited about VB but our therapist needs much more training and
guidance. Our consultant had just begun some training - enough so
that we can see how great this therapy is but not enough for us to
know what we are doing. We are excited, at the starting gate of
this ABA/VB stuff and champing at the bit so to speak but still not
trained enough to run with it - or win a race. I live in Western,
MA (very western - we border Vermont and New York State) and
desperately need a VB consultant. Our Sped director would be
agreeable to this. Our son has been in our home based ABA (Lovaas
style) program for about 2 1/2 years (about 4 hours a week of pre-
school inclusion), he is verbal, no SIB, and has started already
quite a bit of Manding. Any information or sources of VB
consultants would be so greatly
appreciated. Thank you.

VB Learning for "Older" Kids

2007-09-17 01:19:04

Jane and group,
My son started VB at age nine. At that time,he communicated by typing on
keyboards. We had tried to teach him to sign from the time he was 2YO but his
fine motor skills seemed to prohibit learning.
Whether it was his greater maturity or our zeal after Vince Carbone's
workshop #1,he acquired SEE pretty quickly at age nine. He is thirteen now. He
attends our neighborhood public school. He will start seventh grade in two
weeks.

The movie Miracle Run

2007-09-16 14:26:06

Dear Friends:
I know this is a bit off topic but I have to ask...Has anyone seen the
movie on Lifetime this past week? I thought it was great but it also upset me.
I to am a single mom with 4 children to raise, my youngest is Matthew at age
7 who is autistic. He is not a Savant and probably wont be able to achieve
what the boys did in the movie. It made me feel like I am missing something and
I should do more but I do not know what or where. It kind of ate at my heart
a little and I was sad for my Matthew. I can always dream I guess, but that
hasn't gotten me to far yet. I was just looking for other opinions on the
movie. Maybe the industry should do a movie about a non savant autistic child
and what goes on in that family. I am not saying we struggle more just
differently with different outcomes.

how to tie laces on their sneakers or shoes? Also, any materials that are
helpful? Thanks so much!

US Postage stamps just a question

2007-09-15 23:49:52

Hey all,
I am just seeing if their is interest.
If it was possible to get a US Postage stamp that said
"Raise Autism Awareness" on it would anyone pay $16.99 for a sheet
of 20 of them?
BTW they would be real US Postage stamps. The issue is just that
the .37 cent stamps would cost more then double the cost.
So just seeing if people would actually buy them.
Thanks

Vocal self-stimulatory behavior

2007-09-13 16:42:31

Hello group,
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on decreasing vocal
self-stimulatory behavior. The child is 4 years old and engages in a
high-pitched scream-type of vocalization. He has about 100 mands, and is now
learning short sentences/phrases. He also has extensive tact, receptive, and
intraverbal repetoires.
I know its difficult without knowing the child.
We did a functional assessment and the functions were attention and sensory. We
have so far tried:
Re-directing to talk or sing songs (this resulted in an increase of the screams
for attention) or use oral motor toys (whistle, harmonica)
Reinforcing for spontaneously singing songs
Non-verbally redirecting to engage in a functional activity, such as play with a
neutral toy (therapist used physical prompts so as not to give social attention)
Most recently we've started a DRO interval schedule of reinforcement, such that
he receives a reinforcer after every 30 seconds that he does not engage in the
vocal stim. We do this twice a day for 30 minutes each time. Maybe that is not
enough?
Thank you for your help, Cindy

tics

2007-09-13 08:56:46

Michelle,
It's interesting that this comes up, as I was just reading an article on
tics yesterday in one of my journals. It turns out that tics peak in
intensity between 10-12 yo, and then decline to lower levels by age 18.
Eye blinking, as I'm sure a dozen will tell you, can be either a stim (a way
of entertaining themselves), or a tic (a compulsion that creates anxiety
until the action is performed).
While stims are treated with a behavioral approach, trying to prevent a tic
actually leads to a buildup of anxiety, so that most of the child's energy
is put into preventing the action instead of paying attention to you. So if
this is a tic, I would advise against trying to modify it behaviorally. On
the other hand, if the tic is not interfering a great deal, it is possible
that ignoring it as long as it's of minor significance would be an
acceptable way of dealing with it.
Many many children have simple tics, and simply having them does not
necessarily lead to a diagnosis of Tourette's. Tourette's is a more
complicated, longer lasting, disorder that combines both vocal and motor
tics. Eye blinking is considered a simple tic, whereas something like
head-turning or scratching would be a complicated tic.
HTH, and I haven't regurgitated too much of the article back at you :)
Naomi

Tics - Eye Blinking

2007-09-13 02:03:13

Hi,
For about three weeks, my 8 almost 9 year old son has been blinking his eyes.
It started off slowly, but has increased
considerably over the past couple of days. So much so that this blinking is
occuring several times a minute.
I spoke to his psychologist and he's suggested putting him on Tanex
(Guanfacine). Checking webmd.com it says that its used for patients with high
blood pressure and that it's not FDA approved for children under 12.
So now I'm wondering if there are any other parents out there whose children are
on this medication and how its going for them. I'm also interested in hearing
from parents who have NOT put their children on meds and are using specific
behavioral tactics (we've been doing ABA since 1999.)
Any advise would be much appreciated!
Thank you,
Michele

Hi
Anyone out there use TouchMath for their childen? I've downloaded the free
samples off the web site (www.touchmath.com ) but I am especially curious if
anyone has purchased the complete set of products from the company. This
collection is rather pricey (for me) and I'd like to hear some reviews before I
purchase anything.
Any advice on this or any other Math teaching aids would be most welcome.

What is Verbal Behavior and how can it help your child ?

2007-09-11 05:27:46

Dr. Carbone is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who relies on the
literature of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to guide his treatment and
instructional recommendations for children with autism. Dr. Carbone mentors
qualified professionals who provide consultations in a variety of settings,
e.g., home, school, clinic, community, and group living environments. In
addition, they have developed a series of multi-day workshops and training
seminars for parents and practitioners to teach verbal behavior more effectively
to even the most challenged learners. These workshops are designed for parents,
behavior analysts, speech language pathologists, teachers, in-home program
supervisors, tutors, and others who want to improve their instructional skills
with children with autism and related disorders.
Workshop #1: Introduction to Verbal Behavior
Teaching Communication Skills To Children with Autism and Other Developmental
Disabilities
This workshop focuses on the behavioral approach to teaching communication
skills to children with autism and other developmental disabilities. This
approach is based on B.F. Skinnerâs analysis of verbal behavior and the
research of Michael, Sundberg, Partington, and others. Participants in this
workshop learn (1) to conduct a Behavioral Language Assessment, (2) to select
the most appropriate form of communication for a child (vocal, signing, pointing
to or exchanging pictures, or activating an augmentative device), and (3) to
select the communication responses and supporting skills that should be taught
first. The workshop includes the recommended teaching procedures for those
children who have no formal communication skills to those that are near
conversational speakers. The presenter also describes and demonstrates errorless
teaching, specific quick-transfer (prompting and fading) procedures, and the use
of both discrete trial training in the natural environment and during
intensive teaching session. Many video tape demonstrations are provided to
illustrate the methods to increase spontaneous language and to develop
conversational skills.

VerbalBehavior] Obsessive Compulsive Behavior

2007-09-10 16:55:55

Geraldine,
My son 8 years old had similar issues. He would want to wear only particular
shirts & look for those clothes everywhere .. in the laundry basket, in the
washer, dryer ..
I sorted out his clothes in the closet ..I told him that he could wear only the
clothes in closet, later modified it in the clothes only in the upper rack or
those only in the middle rack or those only in the bottom rack. This worked for
my son. You know he would look for a particular shirt & then tell : "the blue
shirt is not in the upper rack of the closet today .. so I cannot wear it".
Hope this helps,
Suman

What my 3 yr old did in the Park !!!

2007-09-10 08:13:38

Hi everyone
I really have to share with you what my son (3 yr ASD) did in the Park
yesterday.
It was 7:00 pm and he manded for Go Out and took me to the Park as usual.
As we reached there I was talking with my friends and he pulls my hand to go in
the pool.
I ignored him and then he mands for Open door, goes in the park and straight
on the slide. Making sure that mom is present.
He loves to play on the big slides, played on the slide 3-4 times trying new
things like walking on the slide in opposite direction, initially he was not
able to do that but now he can. Everytime while playing on the slide he was
making sure that I am present outside by giving me a proper eye contact.
After playing on the slide he went on the see saw and tried to get on it which
again he managed successfully and played on the see saw. He also managed to get
down and then goes on the climbing rope, tried to climb on it , but was not
successful.
By that time I was watching and was in the park, he came searching for me with a
big smile on his face and took me to the rocking chair.
This is a huge difference I saw in my kid, a year back this boy used to just
wander in the park and pick up wood. After a while he only enjoyed the slides
but had no interest in see saw or climbing ropes. But yesterday he played in the
park all by himself for almost 15 mins with lot of smiles and giving an eye
contact to NT children the park.
He also tries to sing some songs which I dont understand. !!!
thanks
Manisha
