yes/no

2007-08-31 16:54:33

Hello. We are doing a 35 hr per week program using a Lovaas
replication site. My consultant is out of the country and I'm trying
to brainstorm my way to a solution until she comes back next week.
We have been teaching my son "yes" and "no." (he is two years old,
almost three, and verbal). He has no problem answering questions
like, "do you want chocolate?" or "do you want your face wiped" with
yes and no respectively. The problem has been when we ask him a
question of fact, such as "is this a pen?" while holding up a pen
or "is this a ball?" while also holding up a pen. We have tried
simplifying the task so that we are only using one object and asking
the same questions about it- ie we hold up a shoe and ask "is this a
shoe?" to which he should reply "yes" or "is this a ball?" to which
he should reply "no". We did these two questions mass trial at 100%
ad infinitum (4 times in a row at 100%) but he just CANNOT GET IT in
random rotation! I don't know how we can simplify the task any more
oir make it more reinforcing, but right now it is very frustrating.
I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Therapists in Eugene, OR

2007-08-31 05:32:36

Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone had leads on experienced ABA:DTT therapists
in the Eugene, OR area? We are going to be trolling the School of
Education at the local university for students (who would need to be
trained), but was hoping we might find other professionals or
paraprofessionals already providing service to other families as
well. The service is for our 3.5 year old daughter.
Thanks! Please email any thoughts to zkelton@...

using the VB program. He was diagnosed at 18months and we have used LOVAAS for

possibly into the fall after school. Will provide training if needed. It's an

Therapist in Atlanta area

2007-08-28 19:49:20

Hi My name is Nicole. You may have just seen an email from me regarding a
family in Charlotte. I am now living in the North Atlanta area in GA and am
looking to get bak into therapy. I have over seven years of exp using mostly
LOVAAS. I started training with VB but a move interuppted my plans. Would love
any help that I can get in finding some families in the area or summer
programs. I know they are out there just not sure where to find them in this
area.
Would apprec. the help.

Staff Training etc.

2007-08-28 16:12:48

My son's teaching Methodology is ABA. It has been acknowledged by
the school district that this is indeed what he has.
1. I know they want to change this, they have at every IEP meeting
for the last 3 years. (Can someone point me in the right direction
to look at legally for info on this?)
2. At IEP on March 3rd two things are on the IEP Addendum.
Teacher training
IEP says "parents requested Staff Training(Principle explained that
the First Grade teacher has had experience with students in her room
with Autism, is a certified Special Education teacher and will be
attending a workshop addressing Autism Spectrum Disorders. Parents
are satisfied with this."
I got a note from the principle that this never happened and that
they don't feel any further training is necessary. Even though this
teacher knows nothing about ABA teaching methodology. That's my
child's proven effective teaching methodology, don't you think she
should at least know the BASICS??? I mean, she had a child with
autism in her class 5 YEARS AGO!!!
Another separate issue,
They sent me an email today telling me that the principle canceled
the Special Ed teacher and my son's aide going to the workshop with
me called "Elimination of Problem Behaviors through excellent
teaching procedures". This one wasn't written in on the IEP
addendum, they agreed to this after the meeting. Now the Principle
just decided that it was IEP time and he just can't let the Special
Ed Teacher or my aide go because of bad timing. What? If they
agreed to it, is it legal for them to cancel now?
3. We met on Monday to come up with draft copies of IEP Goals. I
have requested a copy and they are giving me the run around now
saying someone left them at home etc...... What's up with that?
Thanks for your help anyone!!
Angie

Tito Mukhopadhyay & ABA-AVB for severe dx

Hi,
We are using some techinques that Soma used with her son Tito to
enhance our ABA programming ( you can go to www.halo-soma.org to
get info) because my son's reasoning skills seem age level
(receptively) but he clearly must have ABA-AVB intervention for
social and verbal behavior.
Are any parents out there attempting this?

Time Out for Penny

2007-08-26 15:12:15

Penny,
You are as dedicated a mom as I have ever corresponded with. You
can't, however, by sheer will, make Kenzie better. Cut yourself some
slack. You are supposed to be a mother and son, too. You should
ENJOY each other, not CONSTANTLY assessing how many ways he is not
succeeding. How can you connect like that? Autism sometimes makes us
subconsciously dehumanize our children. We see them as diagnoses need
curing, rather than people with the right to have down time, make
choices, and fail. Kenzie has inherent capacities and disabilities.
You will only be able to help him overcome SOME of them. He may choose
to keep others, or have no choice in that they remain. One right that
we are born with is the right to fail. You can do only so much to help
your son, but he has the right to fail. I am not accusing you, this is
more of a philosophical discussion. But maybe your time at home would
be more rewarding if you build from his abilities some sort of
accepting relationship. He may never write his name independently, and
maybe he feels frustrated and disappointed to rehearse that inadequacy
several times daily. He may never get that sort of motor control. He
may be incapable. But how exciting that he is learning his alphabet.
Perhaps you can build that success to be able to teach him how to spell
with a communication board. And with enough time enjoying each other,
he may be motivated to write you things.
You may want to analyze your "recovery goals." What have you got in
mind for Kenzie's recovery? Normal? What is Normal? I like to think
of recovery in terms of helping my kids satisfy their potential--for
creativity, expression, love, and connection with people on whatever
level they desire. Recovery also includes YOU getting over your guilt,
your sense of loss, and recovering your sense of joy at being with your
son. Recover your appreciation for who he is. Do you know how many
kids complete the ABLLS and don't look or act even close to "normal"?
We stopped using the ABLLS a long time ago, when we realized it was
delving into trivialities that weren't any fun to teach. Most
abstract language comes through play, creativity, imagination and
pretending. We built our relationship learning those things, and
haven't even checked the ABLLS to see if we achieved the Language NORM.
Why? Because we are working on creating joy of life, joy of people,
joy of expression and joy of learning. So now Evy and Ethan can ask
what things mean, and fill in knowledge themselves because they WANT to
learn.
RDI might help, but the less structured the better. I watched his
video, and some of his stuff is awesome, others boring. The non-verbal
communication stuff is great. Play that is scripted isn't really play.
But play can be taught as creativity and imitation is rewarded. You
have WAY TOO MUCH GUILT! WAY TOO MUCH PRESSURE! HAVE FUN ALREADY! My
children aren't normal, but we've recovered from autism in every
meaningful way. It doesn't own us anymore. We love each other. We
enjoy each other. We communicate. Evy just this minute drew me a
picture of a smiling child with a big heart in the middle of his chest.
He handed it to me with a smile, and asked in his own special way,
"Does that fix your heart, Mom?" My answer is that YES, my heart is
fixed. And that is as big a step toward recovery as I can express. So
Penny, work on recovery. Fix your heart. Let go of the guilt and
enjoy your son. Just my thoughts.

You can make a difference

You can make a difference!
ASD-CARC (Autism Spectrum Disorders - Canadian/American Research
Consortium) is a multidisciplinary team of over 60 researchers,
clinicians and parents, located throughout North America, which is
currently undertaking one of the largest Canadian ASD research
projects ever.
If you have a family member with ASD, please consider joining our
research program. You do not need to live in Canada to participate.
Participating is easy:
· You can contribute to many of our projects simply filling
out our on-line questionnaires.
· If you are expecting a new baby or have an infant under one
year of age, you may participate in our prospective study which will
closely track your infant's development
· If you have two or more individuals with ASD in your family
(siblings, cousins, aunt/uncle, etc.), you could be a candidate for
our genetics of ASD study, which is trying to determine the genetic
risk factors for ASDs.
To register, or for more information visit our website at
www.autismresearch.ca, email autism@... or call 1-866-
ASD-CARC (voice mail only).
www.autismresearch.ca
Below is a quote from Jeanette Holden, Program Director of the ASD-
CARC. Please consider visiting the website and registering your
family for this important research.
"Our hope is to recruit 10,000 families to participate in our
research most of these families will participate by completing
questionnaires and by providing us with a small sample (blood,
saliva or cheek swab) for genetic studies. Other families will be
invited to participate in more detailed assessments various
interviews, diagnostic assessments and other studies relating to
processing information, brain imaging, dysmorphology, etc..
Why do we need 10,000 families for our study?
The reason is that we believe autism spectrum disorders are actually
a group of disorders there may be 10 or more different types of
ASDs all sharing some behaviors and other family characteristics.
In order to identify both genetic and environmental factors that
contribute to these conditions, we need to divide families
into "subgroups" that are more "homogeneous" i.e. very similar or
identical to one another. Some subgroups may be more common than
others and, for this reason, all families are important."

2007-08-23 22:40:50

I am currently working privately with a family in Tampa and will be available
to provide therapy hours in the Tampa Bay area starting mid June 2004.
I have been working with this same family for 3 years while taking classes to
complete my BS in Special Education. I have provided in-home education for their
now 7 1/2 year old son. I focus mainly on academic with this child using many
different types of therapies. I am well versed in ABA, VBA, DTT, NET, Kauffman
Apraxic Approach, Direct Instruction, Rapid Prompt method (which is on a huge
rise in the Tampa area), general academic support, as well as the many other
creative ways of teaching.
I have also had many other private clients and have prior experience in a
private school as a lead teacher based in Springfield, VA, providing one-on-one
ABA therapy to children on the Autism spectrum. I have served as a long-term
substitute teacher for the Hillsborough County School system for children with
Autism and other special needs. In all, I have close to 8 years of teaching
experience and would appreciate the opportunity to grow within your foundation
and to support the special needs community.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks in advance for your consideration,
Lee Ann Jones

Touch Math

2007-08-23 06:43:28

Has anyone tried Touch Math and seen any good results? I saw the
Touch Math introduction video and understand the concept. I am
considering Touch Math for my 8 year old son since he's been taking a
long time to master addition and subtraction using manipulatives and
visuals. I know my son is an extremely visual learner. Any input is
appreciated.

Update to request for survey data

2007-08-22 21:40:49

Hello again. Thursday night I posted a message asking for childrens' CARS
scores and the number of ASD siblings (if any). From the responses that I
have received it seems that few people have CARS scores. I guess I
shouldn't be that surprised - I don't even have my own son's! I just figured
with
the mass audience of the internet groups I'd get enough people who had the
info.
So on to plan B. Can anyone who knows their ATEC score send that to me
(again, with the number of ASD sibs as well)? ATEC stands for Autism
Treatment Evaluation Checklist and is available online from the Autism
Research Institute. Because its online and quick to do (it only takes 5 minutes
to complete) I'm sure a lot more of you will have these scores, and I hope that
if you don't, you wouldn't mind spending the few minutes to get it. I am
especially in need of families who do have more than one child on the
spectrum. I have only heard from two so far. The link for the scoring program
can be found at http://autism.com/atec. Since it is an evaluation score to be
done periodically to assess treatment, some people may have multiple scores
for one child. I would like to get the baseline score (the first score you
received) - otherwise, just the earliest (or only) score will do. This isn't a
terribly formal study, the point is to practice statistical analysis, not
publish our
results. Again, I will need this data by Sunday, April 25 and please send it
to
klevermore@.... Thank you so much for your help. I hope our project
will be enlightening for my group and my class.

Word Board?

2007-08-22 13:47:21

Hi everyone. I have read posts from several of you in regard to a
word board. I hope that's what it was called. It's used as a tool to
teach early reading. Recently, someone posted a great description of
how it works and how to set it up.
I thought I saved the post, knowing I wanted to implement it in the
near future, but I cannot find the message.
If anyone knows what I'm talking about...please e-mail me directly.
I would appreciate any information!
Many thanks,

State Wide Task Force in Pa.

2007-08-21 03:24:05

Hey all,
As many of you know, I am a member of Pa's CASSP advisory
board and sit on a Pa Taskforce on autism. However, another
task force is in the process of beign formed and it is
looking for members from Pa residents.
Pa-DPW has started a state wide taskforce to redesign the
mental health, social service, and educational system with
respect to children with serious emotional disturbance (ADHD,
Bipolar Disorder, ODD, Schizophrenia, Depression, etc.). This
task force wants to acheive 50% parent representation, so I
am reaching out to this list to see if people want to sign
up.
Their is much to do. This would give you the opportunity to
advocate for better access to services, more competent staff
with possibly a central training program (a three year staff
development plan), more fair greivance and appeal process.
The first meeting will be on May 22 in Harrisburg but most of
the work will take place by e-mails and conference calls. The
report will be given directly to Estell Richman and the
governor.
I think that they are going to have twleve to fifteen
subcommittees. I would like to see more behavior
analyst's to ensure that BCBA is adopted into residentail,
group homes, and BHRS services. In addition, I think that we
could make the suggestion for moving to a lic. for behavior
analyst.
Also, I was hope to get the client's rights policy to be
worded close to the Right to Effective Behavioral
Intervention statement that Axelrod co-authored some time
back.
If the state support behavior analyst's more will be trained.
Currently St. Joseph's University put out appoximately 30
BCBA's/year. Temple puts out about 20. Penn State Trains
about 260.
If any Behavior Analysts on this list are in this state or
you know a BCBA that wants to join feel free or so please
forward them this message.
DPW will be hosting a kick-off meeting later this spring (May
22), bringing together anyone who has interest in being a
part of the Children's Behavioral Health Taskforce.
Additional information on the Taskforce and application forms
can be found online at
http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/exec/dpwBhtf.asp.

Task analysis of toilet training- cross posted

I am looking for a task analysis of independent toileting. Our daughter is

Any other helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
Also a question about the ABBLS. Requesting help - does then require the use of
the word help or simply a request of assistance?

What qualifies as an ABA classroom?

2007-08-19 22:09:02

Dear Listmates,
After 8 years of battles with our school district over ABA they are now
telling the parents of the preschool to Kindergarten age children that they will
have an ABA classroom starting this fall. They will no longer fund home
programs using Medicaid funding designated for this purpose, nor will they
continue
to use the consultant that we have all come to depend upon. The teachers they
are assigning to this class have never worked in an ABA program of any kind
(one of the teachers has a history of being very anti-ABA, does not want
shadows or other tutors in the class, and has already offended one of the
families
expected to place their child in this classroom.) The special ed director is
telling us that everyone is going to get "trained" this summer but has not been
specific regarding who will do that training or what kind of training she is
has planned. We are not even sure what the adult to child ratio will be or if
there are going to be children with other diagnosis in class in addition to
the kids with autism. Parents are being pressured and rushed to sign I.E.P.s
Any suggestions on how we can handle this crisis? We support the idea of an
ABA classroom but we want a quality, qualified staff...Help...Any strategies
will be gladly considered...Or kids deserve a REAL ABA program ...What
constitutes an ABA Classroom?
Thanks,
one mom deep in the trenches

T.J. Maxx Benefits NAAR & Autism Research

2007-08-19 15:50:17

T.J. Maxx Benefits NAAR & Autism Research
"You Should Go" is More Than a Slogan, It's a Call to Action!
19 March 2004
The National Alliance for Autism Research is honored to announce a new
partnership that has been formed with the national retailer T.J. Maxx that
includes
an in-store fundraising campaign benefiting NAAR and promoting the need for
increased funding for autism research.
T.J. Maxx, a division of The TJX Companies, Inc. based in Framingham, MA,
which also owns Marshalls, HomeGoods and A.J. Wright in the United States, is
launching the âFootprintsâ program in more than 750 of its stores throughout
the
country. The campaign runs from March 21 to April 10, 2004, and invites T.J.
Maxx customers to purchase NAAR Footprints at check-out for a donation of $1.
All proceeds benefit NAAR and all Footprints purchased will be displayed in
the stores.
Every T.J. Maxx store in the United States is participating in the campaign
and will feature window posters, register signs and general information on
autism and NAAR that are designed to educate customers and store associates
about
the disorder and the need for increased funding for biomedical research.
"T.J. Maxx is proud to support NAAR in their commitment to funding autism
research and raising public awareness. The new "Footprints" initiative will give
both our associates and customers the chance to show their enthusiasm and
generosity for this important cause," said Ted English, president and CEO of The
TJX Companies.
He and NAAR Honorary Board Member Doug Flutie recently taped a special
message for a video that is being shown to all T.J. Maxx associates that
introduces
them to NAAR, the challenges of autism and this new campaign.
NAARâs partnership with T.J. Maxx is the largely the result of the work of
NAAR Trustee Margie Pascetta, chair of the New England Walk F.A.R. for NAAR in
2001, co-chair of the 2002 Walk and president and founder of NAARâs New
England
chapter. Over the past two years, Margie developed a relationship with Ted
English and the company, which became a major sponsor of the New England Walks.
That relationship has led to this exciting, new partnership with T.J. Maxx.
âWe feel extremely lucky to have T.J. Maxx signed on as a partner that shares
NAAR's vision of funding and advancing biomedical research,â said Margie. "In
addition to raising critically needed funds, the promotion will increase
public awareness of a cause that has been sorely neglected. We are deeply
grateful
for the support of Ted English and the associates of T.J. Maxx, who have all
made this promotion possible.â

The Behavior Analyst Today

2007-08-18 22:31:25

Hi All,
As my contract stated, this is the last issue of the Behavior
Analyst Today as the lead editor. Under my tenure the
Behavior Analyst Today was created, moved from a newsletter,
to a journal, into every library in the country through EBSCO
publishing, into PsychoInfo, into every library in India
(through J-Gate). Currently we are being evaluated for our
ISI citation index. It has been a great ride. I will continue
on as the copyright owner and associate editor.
This is a great issue covering many areas that I think are
important, including work on the matching law and the
development of conduct disorder, interventions for autism,
and verbal behavior work. This issue releases the last
article ever co-authored by Bill Verplank. You can read your
free copy of 4.4 at
www.behavior-analyst-online.org. Starting next issue, Mike
Weinberg will take over as lead editor and I will continue on
as an assocate editor.
Thanks for the last five years
Joe

What direction do I take?...for pecanbread list this is OT

2007-08-18 18:02:20

I can't seem to stop myself from going in a million different directions. I
think it will be imprinted on my headstone that I am the queen of inconsistency.
I tend to go off on different things and never really focus. I have been so
entranced in Kenzie's diet over the last several months that everything else has
gone by the wayside. Mostly I'm thinking about his learning. I've always felt
that he is a very sick little boy. It's been proven by medical tests, stools
and his behavior. I felt that in order for him to learn in the most optimum way
that he needed to be healthy first. That seems to be something that we will be
working on forever. He's getting healthier but we still have a long ways to go.
I've been reading post from all my different list. The glaring problem for me
seems to be lack of education. I had asked recently on the me-list what people
that about his educational program at school. I think they are doing a great
job of priming him for lst grade in the respect of being with other kids and
being able to handle all that comes with being the in the classroom. What I
think that is being missed is the actual educational piece of the puzzle.
However maybe the priming needs to come before the learning. I get so
frustrated and discouraged that he is so far behind. He's not even remotely at
preschool level and he'll be eight this summer. This is where I think my
responsibility lies. I feel that I should work with him a lot but it just never
seems to happen. He doesn't like to do table work or DTT, never has. He
probably gets way too many videos so why would he want to come to the table to
do things that doesn't interest him. I think the impedance for this post was
reading on the me-list teaching interverbals and RFFC's. We started that four
years ago and never got anywhere. His consultant says she feels he should
really understand for example, what a ball is before you teach all the
components of it. She feels confident with the progress he has made and I have
a lot of faith in her. It's just never enough for me. At this rate I don't see
him as ever getting even close to catching up with his peers, ever. So why all
this bitching you say...why not just, as Nike says "do it." Honestly, I'm
really bad at it. Just like everything else I flounder. What I'm asking is
what would you do if you were in my situation? I have three small children. We
run our own business so I have to have that involvement, especially in the
summer. I live in the mountains of rural Montana with no people around to hire
even if I had the money. No family here, no church involvement. I'm not
complaining because we did this willingly but what would you do? How would you
maintain the needed time he needs in educating him? I am not nor will I ever be
a good homeschool person. I think I would do him, the rest of my family and
myself a disservice by trying to do so. I would just freak out. So, based upon
that, what would you do if you were in my shoes? I just recently attempted to
do RDI with him thinking that would be a good program for after school next year
when he is gone from 6:45am to 5pm. Haven't been doing well with that either.
I've also been looking at and doing some alternative biomedical things like SCD
and homeopathy. I can't seem to stay focused in one direction. Please help.
The forever and always lost mom.

About This Workshop
The Verbal Behavior Center for Autism uses applied
behavior analysis and applied verbal behavior to teach
language to children with autism and other
disabilities. Heavy emphasis is placed on the analysis
of verbal behavior developed by B.F. Skinner. Skinner
taught us that the meaning of a word is found not in
the form of the word itself but in it¡¦s function.
Therefore, a functional approach to language involves
directly teaching the various ways that a word can
function. Typical children do not need to be directly
taught all of the various uses of language. Research
has shown us, however, that children with language
delays need special training on how to use words that
are taught to them. For example, teaching a child to
point to a cookie when asked does not mean that the
child can say cookie when shown a cookie, can point to
a cookie when asked to touch the one you eat, can say
cookie when asked, ¡§What has chocolate chips?¡¨ or
can ask for a cookie when he or she wants a cookie.
This workshop will introduce you to strategies and
techniques to teach the functional use of language. In
addition, you will learn the following:
h How to capitalize on the child¡¦s motivation to
keep learning fun
h How to create a language-based environment
h How to assess the child¡¦s primary language
deficits and needs
h How to determine if and what type of augmentative
communication system is necessary (e.g., PECS, sign
language)
h Where to begin teaching
h How to teach new skills using discrete trials
h How to conduct training in the natural environment
h How to use prompting, fading, and shaping
techniques to bring about new behaviors
Topics will range from teaching beginning skills, such
as matching-to-sample, labeling, imitation,
requesting, and making receptive discriminations to
teaching advanced skills, such as verbs, adjectives,
conversational skills, and requesting information
(e.g., ¡§Where are my shoes?¡¨). Data collection
systems and session management will also be covered.
This workshop is for the following:
h Parents
h Special education teachers
h Speech and language pathologists
h Behavior analysts
h In-home trainers/therapists
h Students
h Direct care staff
h School administrators

Workshop on Saturday March 27, 2004
Centre for Addiction and Mental Health -
250 College Street, Toronto - Clarke Site Auditorium
"Promoting Functional Speech in Children with Autism with
Emphasis on the Kaufman Assessment and Strategies"
Learn research-proven strategies to assist children with autism in
developing speech and refining articulation skills. These strategies,
based on research in the field of speech-language pathology and Applied
Behavior Analysis are especially appropriate for children who are
experiencing difficulty in development of speech and may have a
diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and "verbal apraxia."
Methods for systematically shaping functional verbal communication in
children with limited verbal imitation will be addressed. Application
of Kaufman's hierarchy of vocalizations and use of simplified "word
shells" with this population will also be explored. These strategies,
viewed through the framework of Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior
can be implemented in a home or school-based ABA program.
This workshop is designed for parents, in-home therapists, teachers,
behavior analysts, speech-language pathologists and psychologists who
have a basic understanding of Verbal Behavior.
Cost-Prior to March 9, 2004 - $115; after March 9, 2004 - $135 (Cdn.)

Tennessee and ABA funding

2007-08-16 14:45:51

Dear Tennessee listmates-
As you are probably aware, the state of Tennessee offers very little
funding or resources for our Autistic children and adults. I just
moved to Tennessee and I have been shocked not only by the lack of
interventions provided by the majority of school districts, but also
Tennessee Early Intervention, ARC, etc.... Granted, there are a lack
of qualified professionals and behavior analysts all over the
country - Tennessee is particulary lacking in this area.
Families of disabled children and adults in the state of TN are
working together NOW - to demand better services. We are the only
people who can push a change in the right direction.
I've been in litigation with my local school district for ten months
trying to get at the very least - a classroom staffed with teachers
trained in the fundamentals ABA and generalization strategies so that
even if I have to continue to privately fund an ABA program for my
daughter -- she at least has a chance to generalize her skills to the
classroom. You can read about her strugge with TN at
www.hannahs-hope.com
This Monday is a National Call in Day, demanding attention from
government officials of TN to the Autism epidemic in our state.
Please e-mail me privately, if you can spare a minute or two to e-
mail, fax, or call government officials on Monday. I know how busy
life can be for us -- but this is really, really important.
Thanks,
Natalie Martin

UnLocking Autism

2007-08-15 18:17:00

Football legend and sports commentator Dan Marino invites you to kickoff the
"Power of 1.5" Political Autism Conference, Wednesday, April 21st, 2004, on the
steps of the U.S. Capitol. The Dan Marino Foundation will join with Unlocking
Autism, Cure Autism Now, the GRACE Foundation of New York, and Talk Autism for
the official opening of the conference. Following the news conference, the
future hall-of-famer invites you to a congressional reception hosted by the Dan
Marino Foundation and Unlocking Autism.
Kickoff News Conference Wednesday, April 21st, 2004 at
3:30 pm
U.S. Capitol Building steps
Washington, D.C.
Dan Marino will demonstrate the growing epidemic proportion of children being
diagnosed with autism by throwing a football pass the Unlocking Autism's "Open
Your Eyes" photo collection project. The massive display is expected to stretch
the length of five football fields.
About the Conference
The Power of 1.5 Conference is an effort by Unlocking Autism to bring together
hundreds of delegates from every state, to be trained in the art of "grass roots
politics". This year's conference will focus on education and increased funding
for autism research concentrating on two major bills before Congress this
session.
"Claire and I know from experience how important it is as parents to have the
resources available to children with autism and we know how difficult it is for
many parents to afford the services their children need...it's important that
our congressmen know.they can make a tremendous difference in the lives of
children with autism." Dan Marino, Chairman of the Dan Marino Foundation
"This community so desperately needs to realize the potential and power behind
focused grass roots activity. With more than 1.5 million children and adults
affected by autism in the United States, simple math indicates that
approximately 10 million citizens of voting age are associated with them. That
is a considerable voter impact and if focused, could represent significant
political power." Mary Partin, Chief Executive Officer of the Dan Marino
Foundation.
About the Congressional Reception
Immediately following the press conference, The Dan Marino Foundation will
sponsor a Congressional Reception at the Capital City Brewing Company. Invitees
include conference attendees, Congressmen, Senators, senior staff and members of
the Congressional Autism Caucus.
About the Dan Marino Foundation
The Dan Marino Foundation was founded by sports legend Dan Marino and his wife
Claire in 1992. The Dan Marino Foundation funds medical treatments, outreach
services and disease research to more than 5,000 children per month with chronic
illness and developmental disabilities. The Dan Marino Foundation partnered with
Miami Children's Hospital in 1998 and opened the Dan Marino Center in Weston,
Florida.

Weekend Socialization Program LI, NY

2007-08-15 17:37:52

HELPING HANDS BEHAVIORAL OUTREACH, INC.
A behavior analytic environment for young people with Autism, developmental
disabilities and behavior disorders
WEEKEND SOCIALIZATION PROGRAM
When: Every Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM
Where: Glen Head, Long Island NY
For who: Young people with Autism and developmental disabilities aged 6 to 18.
Individuals are grouped according to age, skill level and diagnoses.
Cost: Socialization program is 75 dollars per day, clinical services are
additional.
The main goal of Helping Hands Behavioral Outreach's weekend socialization
program is to help people with Autism and developmental disabilities further
develop social and interpersonal skills in a unique recreational setting that
involves family members and peer models. Licensed Behavior Analysts, Special
Education teachers, personal trainers, etc. will be working to make each
experience fulfilling and rewarding to the participants.
Also, the participants must learn to transfer their learned skills to a variety
of different situations so that their individual growth is always occurring.
Many individuals with such special needs do not have planning for the
generalization and maintenance of their various skills. Therefore, they are lost
from one setting to another or from one person to another. Parents are
frustrated because they cannot do in school what they can do at home and
teachers/professionals are upset because they cannot do at home what they do in
school. Goals are worked on by various therapists that may not relate to each
other. Therefore progress may be slowed. We are here to utilize the "big
picture" to help each participant grow to their fullest potential.
If socialization skills are not developed self-esteem will suffer. If peer
relations are weak, learning and growing from peers is unlikely. Peer support is
vital for the developmental and social gains of every individual. We utilize
typically developing peer models as well as peer models with disabilities that
may be less in severity than their peer learners. Each peer model will have a
peer learner and a model for themselves. This is a hierarchal system where
participants learn form each other.
We teach family members of individuals with Autism and developmental
disabilities how to interact with their loved one in a fun and safe manner. We
arrange family trips to restaurants and places of interest to ease the social
pain that is put upon many families who have a loved one with a disability. We
create "family fun" that extends to the member with the special need.
If skills are learned in a particular setting (such as school) and there are no
plans to generalize those skills, typically the person with Autism and/or the
developmental disability will not carry over those skills to other settings or
with other people. We will plan for generalization and maintenance of skills by
using a skilled educational liaison to become familiar with all goals done in
all settings and then bridge the gap by working on them in our setting. We will
work with all programs to make success for the participant possible to the
fullest extent.
We have a variety of fun and creative events devised by a leader in the field of
recreation therapy. Such events include but are not limited to:
Practice and conditioning for Special Olympics, personal training (by certified
personal trainers), art therapy, guitar instruction, classical guitar concerts,
trips to major sporting events, trips to local parks, restaurants, exhibits,
hippo therapy, sensory integration activities, practice for talent shows,
computer play (using adaptive hardware), animal therapy, all in small groups.
Tutoring, pre-vocational work, daily living skills practice and social training
in a more academic environment are all available. Community integration trips
are also planned and are led by a community integration specialist.
There are clinical experts available for speech, occupational and behavior
therapy again to bridge the gap between programs and to foster success. All
participants will be extensively evaluated and objective goals will be devised.
Goal progress will be closely monitored by an extensive data keeping system
arranged by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Also, each participant will
undergo a preference assessment and his or her preferences will be provided
accordingly. Each consumer will have a unique socialization profile with
individual's goals and progress notes. Clinical services are offered in addition
to the socialization program. Counseling is available to family's in-group or
individual sessions. Educational and psychological evaluations are provided by
qualified psychologists and are charged separately.
** Behavioral intervention supports are always available by highly trained staff
therefore we do not reject participants who have challenging behavior problems.
Clinical services are priced separately, inquire within.

Uncommon problem ?

2007-08-13 14:59:08

Dear listmates,
Thank so much for all replies and ideas giving to my post. My friend's son
is getting better now with his making water problem. She tried many ways and
the most useful one is using an alarm clock while to keep talking/playing
with him as much as possible. The boy is encouraged to go to the bathroom
only when the alarm clock rings, time period set for the clock is increased
from 15 minutes to 20 and more... and it works!
So, thank you again and good luck to all!

Workshop Notes Dr Bridget Taylor

2007-08-13 14:49:30

Well to all who attended, I am sure you will agree that was such a
dynamic 8 hours! You certainly can never learn enough. The state of
the art, the technology and indiviudalism of the ABA programming
that goes on at ALPINE..was wonderful. The sad part is, that ALL of
our children should be entitled and have available to them this same
type of programming and education (particularly if they are in a
program branded as an ABA program)..Seeing how they took each child,
their deficits and strengths.. and used WHATEVER way possible (from
mand training, to initiation training, to the language master , to
using texturals, and audio , and video and even "gentle reminders")
suiting each program, to each child, down to the specific of each
skill needed for that child.
The video shown was captivating and well rounded. Showing low rate
talkers, to high rate talkers, to non verbal as well as high
functioning, low functioning, willing and un willing learners..
It really was a nice well rounded put together presentation.
What was so beautiful was how they didnt take just one approach to
any one child.
For those who missed it, we will have her again, and here are the
wonderful notes our Workshop Secretary Jennica made to have
accessible for those who couldnt make it.
Thanks Jennica!
And thank you Dr Taylor for your wonderful presentation.
