Telling other parents your child has special needs

2007-07-31 22:31:40

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with writing a LETTER to the
parents of other children in your child's regular education class, either
sharing
your child's diagnosis or just explaining why s/he acts the way s/he does,
why s/he has an aide, and what they and their children can do to be supportive
and understanding. If anyone is willing to e-mail me privately to share a
letter they've written, that would be greatly appreciated. My son is in
kindergarten and his diagnosis is PDD-NOS.
Thanks!
Carole

Starting over, where to begin...

2007-07-31 16:17:30

I have been on hiatus if you will, way too long. Living here in rural Montana I
only have myself for any kind of interventions with Kenzie. I won't go through
my history because most of you already know it. I haven't done anything ABA
wise with Kenzie so long and he desperately needs it. I have been focusing on
biomedical interventions and a lot on doing the SC diet which is very
consuming. But now I must thrust ahead with some VB.
I'm writing this for suggestions and for motivation. My head feels like mush
any more. I've tried so many different things spinning in so many different
directions. I feel the diet is critical for Kenzie but I know I need to work on
academic and life skills. I'm so bad at being organized. I need to begin all
over again. How do I approach it? I know the table will be aversive at first.
Keep in mind that food and videos are his main reinforcers both of which he has
been getting freely because of where my focus has been. My eyes are glazed over
from reading posts on the internet on diet. Food can no longer be a reinforcer
so don't even suggest that. I can hold back a couple of favorite videos to use.
He's not really interested in any toys. Based upon that it's somewhat hard for
me to pair myself with the table as reinforcement when there's not too much
available. He's has been doing DTT at school but only about 45 minutes per day
and not happily.
This is what he is working on at school. Various mands. Tacts for practical
things that he uses at school, i.e., pencil, crayon, scissors, etc. Social
skills of learning students names by using pictures with names. Classroom
readiness learning their morning song, standing independently, walking to the
regular ed classroom from the resource room with aide way behind, lining up for
activities, putting work away, getting out folder, and giving completed work to
regular ed teacher. Self help skills of working fasteners and taking off shoes
and outdoor wear and going to the bathroom independently. Academic is reading
labels and matching with picture, counting from 1-50 and count out groups of
items. Interverbal has been "Where are you going?" and "What are you doing?".
Motor imitation. Ok that's it. Sorry for all of that but I wanted to give you
the big picture. I would like to collaborate with the school teaching lesson
but I think he's capable of so much more.
Here's his current skill level as I know it. His counting varies but generally
he can count rote 1-40. He can randomly identify the numbers 1-20 but gets
mixed up after that. He can count out objects up to ten. On a worksheet he can
have, say four objects with three different answers and he has to say which
answer is correct. He knows his ABC's and he can identify all letters both
upper and lower case. He can read approximately six words because we've worked
on them. We've just started visual phonics, which by the way if anyone has
done that please email me privately. I have questions. He can tact 50-60
objects. He can mand for anything he wants with one word but we're working on
making him expand his mands. His receptive language is pretty good. He can't
write at all so I've found the writing posts very interesting. Everything has
failed in that area for us but we have not worked it nearly enough. He doesn't
color. He can cut ok. Self help is still pretty weak and he is not potty
trained for BM's. That saga never ends. I can't think of anything else right
now.
Based on the above what would you recommend for one hour per day after school?
He is currently in regular ed kindergarten/lst grade classroom about 70% of his
day with the rest of the time with one on one. He has a full time aide but she
is trying to back off some in the classroom to give him independence. What do
you think he should be working on and how much should I focus on various things.
Should I have a full curriculum and touch on things briefly or fewer things and
spend more time on them. For you newbies, I have done ABA/VB on and off for
five years. For some reason I feel like I'm brand new. I'm so out of touch
and burned out but I have taken too much time off.
How best can I organize myself? It seems when he comes home he's so hungry and
with SC diet you spend a lot of time preparing things. Next thing I know it's
late afternoon and time for the rest of the kids to come home. I'm curious how
many of you still do VB after school all by yourself or do most of you have
tutors.
Total rambling here. As I said my mind is mush after all these years and all
these therapies. Please forgive for this long post. I hope to hear from
supportive, inventive and creative people.
Thanks
Penny

Introduction to Using Verbal Behavior and Natural Environment Teaching
in the Classroom
January 14th, 2004
Made Possible by:
Kristine Quinby, Behavior Consultant And
Bucks County Intermediate Unit, Early Intervention
Workshop Description
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is recognized by the Surgeon General as
the only treatment for autism that is backed up by scientific evidence
demonstrating its efficacy
(http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/mentalhealth/chapter3/sec6.html#a
utism).
While there are many school-based ABA programs, most ignore Skinners'
analysis of verbal behavior. Using the analysis of language as a
behavior that is under the influence of the principles of operant
conditioning provides a viable model for helping individuals with a
language deficit. Teachers influenced by this analysis, and who apply
it's principles, focus strongly on teaching language across its
functional classes leading to a more spontaneous and complex language
repertoire.
This workshop will provide an overview of how these principles are being
applied in public school (Pre-K - 8) classrooms. The following
instructional recommendations and procedures will be covered:
* Pairing with Reinforcement: Building Rapport with the Learner
* Manding (Requesting): Capturing and Contriving Motivation
* Classroom Management of Problem Behavior
* Natural Environment Teaching (NET)
* Intensive Teaching: Instructional Variables
* Teaching Play Skills
Presenter
Thomas M. Caffrey, M.Ed is the director of the Verbal Behavior Network
(http://www.verbalbehaviornetwork.com), a collaborative web-based
solution he designed to assist school districts and agencies in training
teachers and related professionals who work with children with autism
and other developmental disabilities. He consults with schools,
consortia and agencies in developing cost-effective staff training
programs. Mr. Caffrey developed the VBN Teacher Training Model, which
provides an infrastructure for public schools to "home grow" experts
(Board Certified Behavior Analysts). This model has now been adopted by
more than forty school districts in eight counties throughout New
Jersey.
Outcome Objectives
This workshop will demonstrate through extensive use of video, how best
practice procedures are being applied in public school settings. The
primary objective of this presentation is to provide the audience with a
conceptual framework, by illustrating how the principles of ABA can be
woven together to manage behaviors and teach language and other
important skills to children with autism and other developmental
disabilities. Classroom teachers, parents, paraprofessionals, and
specialists would all benefit from this presentation.
Registration Information
Registration deadline: Paid registration must be received by January
12th
Fees: $50 per person (Lunch will be on your own)
Please make checks payable to: Kristine Quinby

Increasing Functional Communication and Vocalization in Children
with Autism Using ABA
Parents and ABA therapists face enormous challenges teaching
children with autism to imitate and then spontaneously and
appropriately use language. Methods for effective transfer of skills
from imitative to spontaneous requesting to labeling and conversing
will be presented, viewed via videotape and practiced. Her
discussion also includes speech therapy techniques such as EO
manipulation, pairing/manding (via sign and echoic trails) and use
of early IV and suppression of signs to elicit vocalizations. Ms.
Kasper will also touch on the concept of fluencyusing language in
an effective and timely manner. Ms. Kasper will cover procedures to
maintain cooperation and systematically shape functional language in
children with limited language skills The purpose of this workshop
is to describe and demonstrate methods of effective teaching for
children with autism as found in the literature of Applied Behavior
Analysis as well as evaluation and treatment procedures which have
been proven effective in the field of speech-language pathology. The
methods and materials developed by Drs. Sundberg and Partington and
published in their manuals "The Assessment of Basic Language and
Learning Skills"(1998) and "Teaching Language to Children with
Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities"(1998) will be combined
with procedures popularized by Dr. Vincent Carbone and procedures
developed within the field of speech-language pathology

Website error

2007-07-30 20:43:00

Sorry, a parent has just pointed out to me that one of my website pages was
still proclaiming the Early Learner videos to be out of stock. In fact, I
have just reordered a large supply of them, so feel free to place an order.
I did not reorder PAL (european) format videos. I have only 10 copies left
of that format. So, if you have been waiting to order, don't hesitate.
Sorry for the error! Happy New Year!

VB vs. VB

2007-07-30 11:55:24

Can anyone tell me the difference between the VB Dr. Carbone is
doing and the VB Rutgers/Douglass Outreach is doing? Our son has
been attending Dr. Carbone's clinic for the past four months, but
our school district (almost in due process) wants us to "switch" to
Rutgers Outreach instead. I am very happy with the results at the
clinic am very nervous about making changes when something is
working....especially if there is a difference in philosophies.
Any information would be helpful....especially if it might help us
convince the district (or judge) to keep him where he is.
Thanks,
Grace/NJ

goals?
Thanks for any info.

We're Back!!

2007-07-29 05:17:46

Hello, old friends! I haven't posted on the list since summer. My boys
(Evy-5 HFA, and Ethan 3-Aspie) are successfully mainstreamed and doing great
in school. We are no longer officially running a program for either boy,
and don't even think about their diagnoses very often. Isn't that great?
And it's all due to great therapists, and thoughtful application of solid
teaching techniques using ABA. Just wanted to let you know that I decided
to reorder copies of the Early Learner at Home movie, so they are now for
sale again on my website at www.autismteachingtools.com . I know they have
helped a lot of people get started in their programs by showing them how we
applied ABA in its many facets during Ethan's recovery. The techniques are
all described in intimate detail. For more information, go to the video
section of the website. We have new video jackets too, with pictures of the
boys on the front and back. So if you are friends just wanting a peek at
the boys, feel free to pop over just to look.
For all of you still plugging away in your programs. Take heart. Recovery
CAN happen. God bless and Merry Christmas!

Teaching Social Talk was teaching sign more first / Please

2007-07-28 01:15:44

Jennie and group,
Colin was in first grade when he learned to sign EXCUSE ME. A teacher was
with him when he burped or did some other socially undesirable thing. She
instinctively--she's a mom AND a sp ed teacher--said EXCUSE ME and
simultaneously modeled the sign. Colin immediately imitated the sign.
Later that day she encountered Colin and waved Hi. Colin signed EXCUSE ME.

speech therapists in cupertino/sunnyvale area-VB program

2007-07-27 20:50:18

Dear listmates,
We just moved in to Cupertino Ca. I am looking for a speech therapist in the
Cupertino / Sunnyvale areas(Bay Area). Also I was wondering if there are any VB
Schools/ good consultants or carbone Associates here in Ca that you could
recommend. I have been looking around and haven't had much help in finding these
out. My son is 6 y.o and non verbal so that leaves him with very little time. I
would greatly appreciate any advice/help or information on the above.
Thanks in advance.

Syntax (Word Order)

2007-07-27 16:11:15

Hello,
I'm working with an 8 year old, boy who is quite verbal. He is having
difficulty with syntax, both written and spoken. Currently, we have a
program in which he puts jumbled sentences in order. He can do this
at about 75% accuracy. Does anyone have any more ideas on how to
teach this?
Thanks!

teaching numbers

2007-07-27 07:33:35

I work with a 6 year old (mostly nonverbal) child. Our team was able
to teach him letters within two weeks (lower case and upper case).
And most of his identification is repective. For some reason, he is
having lots of trouble with learning his numbers. I don't know if he
is bored with them or what, but we have been trying since July of
2003, and nothing. We have tried using 3-D numbers, using different
colors of ink on a note card, making Aaron stand up so he can have a
bird's view. I told his mom we should use the microwave since he is
so reinforced by it that he would just press any number. We really
don't know what else to try and I was hoping some one had some
suggestions. Anything would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Vacuum cleaner

2007-07-25 21:55:02

Dear listmates,
My 4 year ASD boy is very scared of upright vacuum cleaners. He cries
and throws tantrums whenever he sees a vacuum cleaner and cannot
tolerate the noise it makes. Surprisingly he is not scared of a 6.5
Hp shopvac and would willingly help using it. I need to know how to
remove the fear of Upright Vacuum Cleaners from his mind ?

VB

2007-07-25 21:23:25

Hi!
I just read your posting. We live in Carbone territory and
do not believe in it. To incoporate some into the program is
okay but the problem we have seen is that there is NO data
and no statistics on it. My daughter has twin 3.7 fraternal
boys and has an in home ABA program going on. The boys have
been making progress but she has tried to throw extra programs
at them and they seem to get confused, it is maybe too much
for them to comprehend. She believes in ABA. She has several
experts on this and the conclusion is "show me the data".
It seems that we have heard the children are not learning with
the VB. I have heard that when anyone goes to Carbones conferences
they are deeply impressed but again, NO DATA to back it up.
Where are you located? How do you feel you are doing with it?
You can e-mail me at a.paul1@....
Would be interested in chatting with you about this. OF course there
is always a doubt, "what if?" But when I approach anyone with ABA
they say "show me the statistics or data"

Telling stories-next step?

2007-07-25 07:16:43

Hi group
My son Nicolas, age 4.10, is starting his third year of ABA. We are
at a crossroads - he is verbal, and we are kind of stuck on the
telling stories program. He can sequence a story no problem with the
pictures, but then getting him to tell the story is more difficult.
If we have visuals, he will say things like "walking dog"
then "eating ice cream" with the second picture, etc. We know where
we want to go "A boy was walking his dog then he went to the ice
cream store and had some ice cream. After he was done, he went to
his friend's house to play" or something like that. How do we cue
him to put more information into his descriptions? We find the same
problem with any program like "what is a dog?". We would ask for
three things about it, and he would say "small, brown, soft" without
any connecting words between the words. How do you help these kids
to be more conversational in their speech?
Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks
Lisa

Teaching Language Workshop by Carl Sundberg & Patrick McGreevy

2007-07-24 15:53:58

Teaching Language and Appropriate Behavior to Children and Adults
with Developmental Disabilities including Autism
Workshop 3: Intensive Training in Verbal Behavior for Professionals and
Parents
Carl Sundberg, Ph.D. and Patrick McGreevy, Ph.D.

December 6-7, 2003
Check-in: 8:00 a.m. Workshop: 8:30 a.m. â 3:30p.m.
Ramada Inn and Conference Center
Indianapolis, IN USA
This workshop provides two days of intensive training in the Verbal Behavior
approach to teaching language and appropriate behavior to vocal and non-vocal
children and adults with developmental disabilities, including autism. This
ABA approach, which is based on B.F. Skinnerâs analysis of verbal behavior
(expressive language), the research and writing of Jack Michael and others, the
book Teaching Language to Children with Autism and Other Developmental
Disabilities written by Mark Sundberg and Jim Partington, and the work of Vince
Carbone,
Patrick McGreevy, and others, begins with expressive language and includes
specific teaching procedures unfamiliar to most professionals and parents. This
workshop is designed for teachers, speech-language pathologists,
psychologists, behavior analysts, direct care providers, in-home therapists, and
parents
who have previously attended an introductory workshop in Verbal Behavior.
The cost of this intensive workshop is $395 per participant, which includes
refreshments, Guided Notes for the workshop with references, and a Verbal

where can I buy ABBLS supplies

2007-07-24 12:35:39

Hi,
My therapist told me about a site where I can buy the supplies to
accompany ABBLS goals. However, I lost the address. I've done a
google search and tried to recontact her, but no luck. Could someone
help? This is not difflearn, to buy the ABBLS, but rather a place
that supplies the stuff you need to teach ABLLS goals. Thanks, Rose

Word retrieval and cues

2007-07-24 01:04:10

I am having some problems with fading the visual cues. The answer is
not there without the picture; it's as though the picture(s) are the
answer or the child is not independently "thinking the picture set."
Parents think the stumbling block is the inability to truly
conceptualise outside the generalised response. We have faded to
1/4th of a picture and he doesn't seem to be able to put it all
together.
i.e.: can label airplane, IV's airplane flies in the ___ (sky) and
two other IV's, can point to and say airplane when given an array and
asked FFC's (has wings, flies, takes people on trips (in a mix)and
will say airplane on sight of one.
Speech therapist suggests there's some sort of apraxia and aphasia
going on because despite DTT, NET and manding programs, often the
word cannot be found and if it is found often the word approximation
fluctuates despite high EO. Anyone else have issues fading visual
cues and what do you do when the child appears unable to "find" or
retrieve the word without them.
Thanks.

Hello I am wondering if anyone had to give up a in home program and
what they did afterwards, I am in a financial bind, 2 small girls and
1 son with autism, my son is 5, we have had a wonderful in home 33-37
hours of Lovass for 1 year and he has made wonderful progress, In
the near future I may have to go back to work outside of the home
fulltime,we do not have family and nannies and help of any kind but
so far we have made it happen, its been tough on the girls, has
anyone had to move on to school and had any luck? any luck
mainstreaming without a in home program? and districts anywhere that
have a clue? and if you are working fulltime, the child gets no
afternoon hours of program so what are the options? If we are able to
find something decent we can and will relocate.

Hi all,
I just wanted to let people know the S. 1248 is on the docket
for a Senate vote. We have won alot with this bill. It now
contains Functional Behavioral Assessment, which was returned
to the bill. It has alot of references to postive behavioral
support and research / scientifically based reading and
direct instruction. In addition, behavior specialist was
added and support for allowing them to have training in
techniques of scientific management, behavioral evaluation,
functional behavioral assessment, and positive behvioral
interventions and support. No mention this time around of
BCBA's but discussion of a behavior specialist certification
and I believe we will win the push for BCBA's as is occuring
in Pa at the state level.
In all, behavior analysts should feel free to support this
bill but not the house bill. This will allow behavior
analysts at
the university level to create more behavior analytic
positions by offering courses in Direct Instruction,
Functional Behavior Assessment and Scientific Behavior
Management. Please feel free to go to:

Talking Targets and Talking Words?

2007-07-22 08:07:31

Does anyone have any experience with these two products? Talking Targets looks
like a book with worksheets and Talking Words appears to be software allowing
production of worksheets, etc. Seems like it works from the ABLLS models and
from the website, seems like they're both pretty useful. However, before I make
the purchase, want to make sure it's worth it. Thank you in advance!

VB School in Chicago

2007-07-19 09:03:27

Does anyone know of a good school for my son's
special-ed teacher to visit when she goes up to
Chicago? My son is in a full-inclusion
1st-grade class in Bloomington, Indiana. His
special-ed teacher just attended Carbone's
workshop #1. She is very willing to learn more
about VB, but she could not get into workshop
#5, which is a workshop about how to use VB in
the classroom. However, she is going to spend
several days in Chicago next week, and she asked
me if there is a good school (public or private)
that she could visit. Does anyone know if there
is a Verbal Behavior school for children with
autism in Chicago? Better yet, is there a
school that combines VB with RDI (Relationship
Development Intervention)? If not, is there a
school that simply has a good program for
special ed? This is a great opportunity that
can really benefit my son and other AS kids at
his school. Any suggestions will be greatly
appreciated!
Thanks,
Julia

Teaching reading

2007-07-18 09:13:46

Hey Folks,
I've haven't had much experience teaching reading as part of an ABA program.
However I'm now faced with an 8 year old boy who has great site reading memory
but isn't able to see individual letters or sound out words. I am familiar with
and even used some of the available programs that are recommended such as SRA
distar etc. However, this family only speaks German so I need to know of
something that is either in German or more likely I'm hoping someone can outline
some basic strategies to begin teaching a child that letters have individual
sounds and that they can be put together. I'd also be interested in hearing
peoples takes on whether or not a child with a great memory can learn enough
words through site memory to overcome not being able to read by sounding out
letters.
Finally, If I need to buy a program, and teach myself the teaching methodology
and then offer it out piece by piece in German, I'd be interested in hearing
your opinions on which program would be the best to do this with.
Thanks for your input,
Robert

AUTISM WORKSHOP
The introductory one day workshop will cover the basic elements of B.F.
Skinnerâs analysis of language, language assessment, and beginning a language
intervention program for a child who has little (less than 100 words) or no
verbal
skills. The objectives of this workshop are to teach participants how to:
â¢Â  Use a behavioral approach to language assessment   Â
    (e.g., mands, tacts, and intraverbals).
â¢Â  Establish an effective individualized language
intervention program for children with autism.
â¢Â  Utilize motivational variables to teach language in
structured sessions (discrete trial training),   and in
    on-going daily activities (natural environment
    training).
â¢Â  Write language based IEPs and use the most efficient
    data collection system.
â¢Â  Determine if augmentative communication is necessary,
and if so, which type might be best for an individual
child (e.g., sign language, PECS, writing).
The two day workshop will follow the first day and will focus on more
advanced language training. This workshop is designed for individuals who have
taken
the one day workshop, or are familiar with behavior analysis and Skinnerâs
analysis of language (e.g., mands, tacts, and intraverbals) and are working with
children who have at least a 100 word tact and receptive vocabulary. The
objectives of this workshop are to teach participants how to:
â¢Â  Analyze a childâs language skills, including language
problems such as echolalia, rote responding, and
overcoming linguistic barriers using the tools of
behavior analysis and Skinnerâs (1957) book Verbal
    Behavior.
â¢Â  Develop intervention programs to teach multiple
    component tacts (e.g., subject-verb-noun),and advanced
    tacting (e.g., prepositions, adjectives, feelings).
â¢Â  Develop intervention programs to teach manding for
missing items, manding for information, and manding to
    remove aversives.
â¢Â  Develop intervention programs to teach social
interaction, classroom skills, and academic skills.
â¢Â  Analyze instructional decisions such as school
placements, inclusion, DTT vs. NET, as well as   alternative
treatments for autism.
These workshops are co-sponsored by University of north Texas, and can be
helpful for individuals who work or live with children with autism or other

Beginning a LanguageIntervention Program
October 2, 2003
Teaching Advanced Language Skills
October 3 & 4, 2003
 Â
AUTISM WORKSHOP
The introductory one day workshop will cover the basic elements of B.F.
Skinnerâs analysis of language, language assessment, and beginning a language
intervention program for a child who has little (less than 100 words) or no
verbal
skills. The objectives of this workshop are to teach participants how to:
â¢Â  Use a behavioral approach to language assessment   Â
    (e.g., mands, tacts, and intraverbals).
â¢Â  Establish an effective individualized language
intervention program for children with autism.
â¢Â  Utilize motivational variables to teach language in
structured sessions (discrete trial training),   and in
    on-going daily activities (natural environment
    training).
â¢Â  Write language based IEPs and use the most efficient
    data collection system.
â¢Â  Determine if augmentative communication is necessary,
and if so, which type might be best for an individual
child (e.g., sign language, PECS, writing).
The two day workshop will follow the first day and will focus on more
advanced language training. This workshop is designed for individuals who have
taken
the one day workshop, or are familiar with behavior analysis and Skinnerâs
analysis of language (e.g., mands, tacts, and intraverbals) and are working with
children who have at least a 100 word tact and receptive vocabulary. The
objectives of this workshop are to teach participants how to:
â¢Â  Analyze a childâs language skills, including language
problems such as echolalia, rote responding, and
overcoming linguistic barriers using the tools of
behavior analysis and Skinnerâs (1957) book Verbal
    Behavior.
â¢Â  Develop intervention programs to teach multiple
    component tacts (e.g., subject-verb-noun),and advanced
    tacting (e.g., prepositions, adjectives, feelings).
â¢Â  Develop intervention programs to teach manding for
missing items, manding for information, and manding to
    remove aversives.
â¢Â  Develop intervention programs to teach social
interaction, classroom skills, and academic skills.
â¢Â  Analyze instructional decisions such as school
placements, inclusion, DTT vs. NET, as well as   alternative
treatments for autism.
These workshops are co-sponsored by University of north Texas, and can be
helpful for individuals who work or live with children with autism or other
developmental disabilities. Participants will receive a 75 page handout and a
certificate of attendance.

Verbal stimming

2007-07-15 15:00:00

Hi listers,
I'm mom of a 29 months aut. boy in Vietnam. I'm doing VB programe by myself
at home for just 2 months. My son is vocal and he can imitate quite well
most of my words. He loves music and can remember the song's melody with
some lyrics after just 3 times listerning. I'm happy about that because it
helps him in learning language. However, he sings spontaneously during most
of the day, during playing, during walking, even during learning time when
I'm in front of him and asking him question. This interfere a lot his
attention and learning. I don't know how to stop him - talking loudly,
shaking his head... don't work.
If any of you have experience or ideas how to deal with this, pls share with
me. Any reply will be very much appreciated.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks and best regards.

Speech Therapy

2007-07-14 10:15:50

Dear List,
Does anyone know what materials to use to do "speech therapy" at home? I want
to incorporate that into my son's program but not sure what to get.
Thank you,

When to say no

2007-07-14 04:44:42

Dear group,
We have been running a VB program for our 3yr old son for 6 months now. He is
manding quite a lot now and he always gets what he wants ASAP when he asks.
However, it is no great surprise to discover that his most frequently used
spontaneous mand is for sweetie!! He signs & vocalises beautifully. I don't
want him filling himself full of sweet stuff as he then doesn't eat meals and
then his concentration goes down. I am keen to follow the rules. Could anyone
offer advice as to how I might deal with the constant request for "sweetie".
I am still giving him the sweetie when he asks. His spontaneous manding is
gradually going up and yesterday he requested an abstract thing; he signed and
said train and then went to the door and did it again. He wanted to go and see
the trains!!
Many thanks
Bev

toileting question - running into the bathroom too often

2007-07-13 16:10:21

Probably not the biggest problem on the toileting spectrum of issue, but I need
some advice. My 5 year old (who got pretty good at toileting about 1 year ago)
now goes into the bathroom to attempt a bowel movement too often without
actually moving his bowels. In other words, on a typical weekend day, he may
wake up, feel he has to go and then go into the bathroom. He will sit on the
toilet for a while but after 5 or 10 minutes when nothing happens, we ask him to
get dressed and come out. He reacts calmly as he realizes nothing happened and
will comply. He then will do the same thing 4 or 5 more times at 1-2 hour
intervals later in the day. It's not until the 5th or 6th attempts that he
actually has a movement. The cycle then starts again. This does not seem to be
a work avoidance problem in general as it seems he feels he has to go, and it
happens during activities he enjoys (e.g., watching a video) as well as work
activities. Also, it's more of an issue at home (after-school
and weekends) because in school he is not brave enough to ask for the bathroom
more than once or twice a day.
I know this is not the worse problem to have and it's good news he's monitoring
his body, but I was curious to see if others have run into this and what I might
do to cut down on the number of "false alarms." Thank you.

Stimming

2007-07-13 15:26:23

Hi,
We have started an ABA program with my little guy that has been largely
successful using a VB model per say. Our main problem at this point is his
self stimming which takes the form of running and a form of hand flapping,
occasional spinning and visual stims. Does anyone have any advice on the
best way to deal with these behaviors? Is it important to take some kind of
data on when and under what circumstances these things occur or is it
believed that stimming is an internal thing that is not controlled by
environmental factors? I'm really confused with this one.
Thx,
Maryann

Verbal Behavior Preparation

2007-07-13 05:50:39

FYI,
I attended Dr. Carbone's workshop #4 at his Clinic in New York this past week
and I wanted to pass along to everyone just how practical and informative it
was. I was very impressed with the techniques and procedures that were shared.
I thought that the two presenters Holly and Cherish did an excellent job of
answering our questions and guiding us through the practice sessions. I feel
impelled to recommend it to everyone on this list. If you have any interest in
expanding your ABA programs into a more Verbal Behavior style approach, I
wouldn't hesitate to get to this seminar.

Video Request

2007-07-12 21:15:06

Hi All!!!
I have a request. This fall I have returned to college to finish a bachelor's
degree I started 19 years ago. I am now a Psychology major and plan to pursue a
graduate degree in ABA and hopefully become a BCBA in time.
In a couple weeks I will be teaching a class about Autism. (This is for extra
credit) I would like to include video examples of the behaviors described in
the DSM IV. Granted I have quite a variety of examples in my own household but
I would like to show a variety of children at a variety of ages if possible.
The video could also include techniques for handling the behavior if you wish.
I am also interested in showing examples of a Verbal Behavior program.
If anyone would like to share some video for a good cause please email me
privately at jwandkiwi@... and I will send you a form giving me permission
to use your tape. Your tape will only be shown to students in a teaching
environment at Illinois State University and will be returned to you. I am
doing this for extra credit - yes, but really I am doing it in an attempt to
raise awareness and possibly convince some young students to pursue a career in
helping kids with Autism. The class consists of potential special Ed teachers,
speech therapists, social workers and psychologists.
Thanks!!!

Therapists needed in South Jersey

2007-07-11 17:46:27

Hi everyone,
There is a big need for therapists (both trained and untrained) in our area here
in southern NJ (Moorestown, Mt. Laurel, Voorhees, Gloucester County, etc). I
have had many, many requests to help find therapists in the last few weeks and
am starting here...If anyone knows of therapists or college students (anyone who
would be interested). please pass on my email to them. So many great kids and
just not enough VB therapists out there!
Training is available and pay is ranging from $12 and up for inexperienced
individuals to approx. $20 (maybe bit more) for experienced therapists
(depending on experience).
Pass on to anyone who may be interested. Thanks so much,

ABA / VB Consultant

talking

2007-07-11 09:07:21

looking for input from you all; I am a therapist for a first grader
and I must say I think he is doing rather well. He follows
directions rather well, with little or no prompting. Needs little
prompting to listen to the teacher. Here is my concern...sometimes
he talks..not always loud..but just talks when the rest of the class
is supposed to be doing their work quietly.. but there is quiet
talking going on most of the time. What it is that he is talking
about seems to be mostly the thoughts in his head..like daydreaming
aloud. Sometimes I try to say..."it's okay to talk but you need to
talk to your friends or me." Is there some way to teach him to keep
the thoughts in his head from coming out of his mouth? Would a
social story help and if so..how to word it? What comes out of his
mouth isn't related to anything going on in class.
Thanks ahead of time.

therapists at home--organizing

2007-07-10 05:27:17

To address Naomi's question, we have a number of ways of maintaining
consistency in our home-based ABA program. We currently have six therapists
so this is a very important aspect of quality control for us.
Clinic meetings are ideal, but they get pretty pricey so we admittedly use
them less than we would like.
I have set up a binder called 'daily notes' and I ask therapists to jot down
highlights of the day when they're done their shifts - things that were
exceptional - exceptionally good, bad or unusual. It's just a little place
for anecdotal data to supplement the real data in his binder. I also ask my
lead to use this binder to flag any major changes in his programming,
referring them to the data and instruction sheets for further detail. It's
also a great place for me to make a note to staff about things that may or
may not be directly related to Michael's programming (e.g. "he is obsessing
on his Toy Story video so I have put it away in case you are looking for
it.").
Beside every posting in the book are six very narrow columns where
therapists must leave their initials after reading each post. It is part of
their responsibility to come in about 10 or 15 minutes in advance of each
shift (this is paid time) to set up their data sheet and review this book
back to the date of their last entry.
We have also made a group email list that includes our consultant, so we can
'discuss' his programming and our consultant can pipe in as he sees fit.
With respect to team meetings, even when we want them, I find it gets tricky
to get everyone in the same place at the same time due to many busy
schedules, so what we're now doing is supplementing the group meetings with
'mini-clinics'... my lead and I will discuss programming changes, and then
as it is convenient for her, she will schedule herself in - usually during a
'changing of the guards' as I call it, when one shift is ending and another
is beginning, and review the information with them, get their feedback etc.
Granted, they will be pulled away from my son for awhile, but hopefully, if
we do these frequently enough, we'll only have to use about a brief half
hour at the end of one shift and the another half at the beginning of
another, a few times a week, once every month or so. We haven't really
started this yet but I'm hoping it will work out nicely.
As for scheduling, I put our therapy schedule on-line so that all therapists
can see it from wherever they are, and our lead easily knows who is working
when so she can drop in as needed when additional supervision is needed.
There are many on-line, password-protected calendar services available on
the web that are perfect for this use.
I hope these ideas are helpful :-)

Subject: therapists at home--organizing
We have just recently started a in-home program and have a wonderful
consultant (luv ya Mary!). I would like to see a sampling of how various
people organize their therapists. Do you have regular meetings with them,
how else do you communicate with them? We currently have a cork board for
announcements, but I would like to be able to get them together for gr
