teaching cause and effect

2007-02-28 12:12:57

Does anyone have a good list of activities to teach cause and effect
(why questions)? I have the list in A Work in Progress, but I'd like
some new ones to rotate with them. My daughter really needs this
reinforced, and I wanted a way to make it fun for her. We did basic
ones like sticking a paper towel in water, shutting the lights, knocking
things over, cutting things with a knife, asking what happened and why
it happened. Guess I could do turning the TV set on and off, ripping
paper, pressing buttons on various things, but if anyone has better
ideas I'd love to hear!

2007-02-27 19:42:14

Hello,
I have a good friend who is interested in working with children with
ASD. Her name is Susan Gorelick. She does not have any previous
behavioral experience, but has been wonderful with my child, and a
natural gift for engagement and loads of patience.
If someone in the NYC area is interested, please contact her at this
email address, or at 631-329-2922. She lives in the upper east side
of Manhattan, though she is here on Long Island for the rest of
August.
You can contact me at JFRRMR19@... if you have any
questions, though they may best be directed to her : ). (I will be
away for about 10 days, but will respond as soon as possible to any
inquiries).

Speech Therapy and Verbal Behavior

2007-02-26 23:20:37

Hi...we've been doing a VB program with our senior citizen
daughter (13.6 :-) for a year and a half or so. And never believe anyone who
tells you it won't work with an older child! But as we are trying to take
advantage of in home "regular" therapy hours also - she is getting OT, PT and
Speech at home several times a week. The OT and the PT are very openminded
and interested in input about her VB program. However (I'm sure you know
where I'm going with this) our SLP is not particularly interested in helping
with the program and being part of a team effort. She is trying, and she is
very capable and has gotten some good results with our child. (We also don't
have much choice in alternate therapists who will come to the house on
medicaid fee).
I discovered that if I can learn to speak Speech Therapese she is
much more likely to be interested. For example, she is more than happy to
work on "phonemes" but her eyes glaze over if I mention "echoics" or "tacts".
So my question is this - I am admittedly not up to snuff on traditional
speech therapy. Is there any type of book you all could recommend...something
along the lines of "Speech Therapy for Dummies?" I need to catch up quickly
and am not sure where to start. I don't want to learn enough to BE a speech
therapist, just enough to communicate with one and probably to be a pain in
the you know what. My husband and I joke with Jamie's doctors that we know
just enough to be dangerous and to make their lives miserable.
Any websites or suggsted reading would be greatly appreciated. I know
there are some sympathetic SLPs on this list also interested in bridging the
gap between ST and Verbal Behavior. And if they are on another list for
profesionals only would someone be kind enough to forward this letter to that
list. Please??

VB therapist moving to Reno

Hello everyone
I am moving to the Reno area in August and will have some hours
available to work as a VB therapist. I have been teaching verbal
behavior for almost 2 years under the supervision of Dr. Carbone
and his associates. I have worked with early, intermediate and
advanced learners and have run home programs. I also have
experience with signers. I have attended all of Dr. Carbones
workshops a few times with the exception of Workshop 3.
I became a board certified associate behavior analyst in 2000, and
I am a year and a half through a masters program in behavior
analysis at the University of Nevada.

would like more information about me ( resume, letters of

Spontaneous language and commenting

2007-02-25 04:04:52

Hello all.
Wanted to get some suggestions on how to get more spontaneous language.
Especially tacts and commenting.
I have tried the videos and the pauseing, but it seems he awaits the
PAUSE or the mute before illiciting resposes.
The thoughts were that if he finds the video that reinforcing he will
try and AVOID the pausing and start illocitng spontaneous commenting.
This hasnt transferred.
Has this happened with anyone else?
Also, suggestions on getting beyond manding for just immediate
reinforcing activites and objects.
My son will say (in one breath)
"Mom, wake up. Open the door, I need the keys, I want green swing, I
need bathing suit, lets go outside, lets go swimming" (this is what I wake up to
most mornings)
However, once his needs are met, he does not spontaneously tact or
comment on things.
Or even to go beyond his immediate reinforcing manding repitore.
Like manding for past events or reinfrocing activites. Or commenting or talking
when he is NOT engaged with me or teachers.
I think sometimes that for him his ABLLS is quite decieving since he has many
many skills and we do lots of NET but his spontaneous commenting or talking is
not beyond asking for immediate reinfrocing actions or things. Especially if
someone is not engaging him.
He knows many many intraverbals and you can go on and on with intraverbal
stories
that need him to fill in the blanks.. but it is his spontanoues initiation of
saying things whne not asked to or when not expected to that he seems deficited
at.
Any suggestions that you have done?
I know how it is supposed to work, and how to program for it, but it is always
great to hear what others have done who have "been there , had that problem."
I would love to hear some NOVEL
examples on how you promoted this.
Thanks! Nicole

WALL POCKETS FOR FLASHCARDS ETC?

2007-02-24 17:55:34

Our consultant for VB has advised us to get wall pockets to hold the various
sets of cards, words etc that we use in our son's programme, so that they can
now be taken out, mixed etc. and easily replaced. It ought to be easier than the
present ziplok bags we use.........faster, anyway. Well, last night I trudged
round IKEA looking for them and they are no longer there..........if they are,
none of the staff knew where they were either!
The only otherthing I have seen is in great little trading co. catalogue, and
has 12 big pockets for £25. It has to be hung on a door, and is held by
suspension cords at the bottom and top. All a bit fiddly.
Does anyone else use anything that sounds like this and do they remember where
they got it from?
I mean a kind of thing that has a flat back, rectangular shaped, and lots of
smaller pockets on the front of it.
Thanks,
Julie in Scotland.

Dear Listmates,
I would love to let the families along the I-45 between Conroe and

studying EC-4 education with emphasis in special education. Christie has
worked with our son (who'll be 6 in August) for 18 months and has done an
awesome job teaching him fun, interactive games and getting him to play
like a little boy. My children adore her. She is a bundle of energy and
enthusiasm and is gifted in increasing verbal behavior and teaching play
and social skills.
If interested, you can contact her directly at

Verbal Reinforcers

Can anyone point me to a list of verbal reinforcers we can use (i.e.,
Awesome!, Great Job!, Way to Go!)? I'd like to put them on a white board
so the tutors can glance up and say something besides "Good job." If you
could brainstorm and respond to me privately, I'll compile and repost the
list we've come up with. Thank you.

Updated Links Page and New Toy and Game section

2007-02-23 03:03:34

Hope everybody enjoyed their weekends. I updated the format of the links
page so you can get to the section you want easier. Check out the new
format. You may realize we have more links than you were able to notice
with the old format. Also, (sorry if this is redundant), check out our new
Toy and Game section. There is a good core of products there, and I am
expanding it even more every day. If anyone wants to be on an email list
for website updates email me privately. Also, if there are any behavioral
consultants who would like to post their website or email on the links page,
email me with your information, types of therapies you program, years
experience and contact information for at least 2 clients so I can check if
you are any good! Though no endorsement is implied by being on the list,
I'm sure some will take it that way, so I want to be careful.
Happy Monday!

thinking of getting it for our 3-1/2 yo HF PDD-NOS daughter. We tried the DT
Trainer for 30 days, and, while I liked the program, it did not hold her
attention because she is used to more vivid programs such as Jumpstart and
Reader Rabbit. We recently had her assessed for speech therapy; while her
expressive language is at the 12-24 month stage, her receptive language was
assessed to be normal for her age. Based on this, would The Great Action
Adventure work for her? It's an expensive program for us, and I don't want
to get it and have her lose interest quickly. All opinions appreciated!
Blessings!

visual schedules response

2007-02-17 23:41:49

Julie,
We just did this with my son and it worked well. We have 6 different colored
plastic bins of 2 different sizes. I just took photos of the empty bins. We
put whatever toy or activity we wanted him to do into a colored bin. On his
visual schedule he saw a picture of that colored empty bin, and learned he
had to do the activity that was in that bin. This way I don't have to
photograph every activity.

VISUAL SCHEDULES

2007-02-17 21:14:45

We are currently about to prepare photos for a visual/written schedule for
James.
Do others tend to just put all kinds of 'table work' together into one category?
If so, and you want to set up 3 tasks before reinforcer, or even two, how do you
differentiate between tasks?
If not, how do you divide up and take a photo of / name simply, activities such
as tacts, ffc's, fluency sprints etc?
Sean, you know James very well now. Photos of reinforcing items will not be
hard, but how do you suggest we divide / photograph / name the tasks?

Stim - acting out video scenes

2007-02-17 09:09:45

Dear All,
I wonder if anyone had encountered the following pattern with their child and
had successfully dealt with it. Please share.
My son has lately developed a stimming pattern which we are finding very
difficult to eliminate or reduce. Most of his old stims involved objects (like
arranging numbers according to the timer on the video player or peeling off bits
of everything soft enough to peel and throwing it into the toilet bowl!!) and we
kind of made the objects disappeared and the stims stopped after some tantrums.
However now that he is a master of imitation skills (NVI and VI) he is onto
acting, complete with all the different voice intonation and sound effects; and
we have nothing to take away or hide as it is within him. We had tried stopping
him watching the videos for a period of time but his memory skills beat us to it
- he would still be acting out long after not watching the videos. He could
virtually act out most of the scenes in his favourite videos (and he has a lot
of them - over 200). While it was funny to see him do that in the beginning, we
think it is getting way out of hand. He does that all the time when he is out of
therapy sessions and not engaged in any interesting activities and he refused to
play with the toys which he had liked very much before. Sometimes we could
interrupt him (eg by saying "pause first, let's go...) but when he has started
acting out his current most favoured video, he would threw a major tantrum if
someone interrupts him. There are some good parts to it though, eg he would ask
us to join in and be part of the props for his show!
Should we stopped the videos all together? Would that discouraged him from
verbalising or imitating?
Please email me privately at yarch@... as I have limited access to the
group mail. Thanks.
Regards,
Yvonne

Toe-walking

Okay, one more.
Kenny walks on his toes whenever he's not wearing shoes. He curls
his toes underneath, and it looks horribly painful. Any ideas on
what I can do about this (short of keeping him in shoes all the time)?
Thanks,

When to switch from home ABA to School Program

2007-02-14 23:11:20

Our son, Dylan, is 3-1/2 and has been in an intensive Lovaas-style
home ABA program (35 hrs/week). (We are currently starting a
supplemental VB program to see how he responds to NET.) His program
includes 5 hours per week in a preschool disabled program and 2 2hr
play dates during his home program per week. He is verbal, although
not converssational, and age appropriate on many academic skills
(alphabet, counting, colors, shapes, puzzles, etc). His primary
weeknesses are expressive language delay, recipricol language, peer
socialization. He still has a lot of problems with non-response and
scripting videos.
The school district wants to switch him to a full-day program at
school that will incorporate ABA (not Lovaas-style but couldn't tell
me what model) and some Greenspan with typical kids. I don't feel he
is ready...but how do you know when your child IS ready, and when the
appropriate time to make that kind of move is?

Word Learning Study - New York and Boston

2007-02-14 09:34:07

Dear List,
I am investigating what strategies children with autism use to learn
words mapped to pictures and objects. I am seeking children with
autism, age 6-9, with limited communicative ability to participate in
word learning studies, which are consistent with discrete trials
learning. Studies are conducted at New York University, Harvard
University or via home visits (Long Island, Queens, Manhattan, Boston
& neighboring suburbs).
Please contact Melissa Allen for more information:

Visual "stimming"

2007-02-14 03:01:29

Wonder if anybody has tips for minimizing my son's
visual stimming. He's 25 months and he will stare at a
spot on the wall, or a design on a piece of furniture
and circle that spot, or tilt his head in all
directions, etc.
We've done an awful lot of breaking-into his stims by
turning them into peek-a-boo games or simply
distracting with another activity... but sometimes you
just have to feed the other kids or something and you
can't get to him in time. Anything creative that you
may have used would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

What is "mildly verbal"?

What is considered "mildly verbal"? It's always so
difficult to get an understanding of these things
because what is mild to someone may be low to someone
else or high for yet another parent. Thanks.

Theory of Mind

2007-02-13 15:39:15

Hi guys, found a great book that is perfect for introducing Theory of Mind.
It is a children's book called "HUG" by Jez Alborough. The story is nearly
wordless (the word HUG appears on many pages). This is how we read it to
teach TOM. A little monkey walks up to a mommy-baby elephant pair who are
hugging and he labels, "HUG." I ask Evy, "What does the monkey see?"
Prompt, "the elephants are hugging." (He tends to see only the
label--elephants). Monkey walks past a pair of lizards, and snakes and
labels "Hug." Again, "What does the monkey see?" Prompt the
subject-action. Monkey walks past the elephants again with a very sad face.
You ask," How does the monkey feel?" (Sad) "Why does he feel sad?"
prompt "Because he wants a hug." Monkey continues walking dejectedly.
Maybe ask, "Does he want to hug the elephants?" who are watching monkey
walk away. (Prompt "NO") Ask " Who do you think he wants to hug?
(open-ended question)" (Any answer works) Comment "Let's find out " or "I
think he wants to find his mommy."
Monkey climbs on elephants trunk and tells elephant, "Hug" meaning he wants
help getting a hug. Elephant carries monkey on his head and off they go.
Ask, "Where do you think they are going?" Prompt "Maybe they are looking
for his mommy." Monkey sees cheetas (Evy calls them lions) hugging. Ask
"What does he see?" (Lions hugging). They walk on, monkey sees lions
hugging. Ask again, "What does he see?" Ditto with the hippos. Finally
all the animals watch as monkey opens his mouth and wails, "HUG!" We like
to reenact this part. Ask, "WHY is he yelling HUG!" (because he wants a
hug!) Monkey starts to cry. "Is he happy?" (No) "How does he feel?"
(Sad, lonely, etc). "What does he want?" (hug) Mommy Monkey comes
running, yelling "BOBO!" "Who do you think THAT is?" (mommy). "Why do you
think she is yelling "Bobo!" (that is his name)--inference moment. Monkey
runs to mother yelling "mommy!" "Is Bobo happy or sad?" (happy). Monkey
and mother hug. "Why do you think he is happy?" (Because he is getting a
hug). Monkey hugs elephants trunk and says "Hug." "Why is monkey hugging
the elephant?" (to say thank you for helping him find his mommy, because
he is happy, etc). Everybody has a group hug. (They are SO HAPPY).
Any time you ask a child to describe what another might be thinking, seeing
or feeling, you are helping them understand Theory of Mind, building
empathy, helping them acquire the foundation for social relationships. Keep
books in mind as a tool. FYI, we are fading the prompts ASAP. Juliet Burk

Speech and Language Therapist WANTED AND NEEDED

2007-02-13 09:37:09

Dear Friends, I have just come from a meeting tonight at my sons school. We
are loosing a contract speech therapist and are already down like 2
positions. The school has posted and advertised but of course is not getting
much response. If anyone knows of someone willing to relocate they are
offering a very attractive package. We live in a rural part of Michigan and
it is quiet and beautiful country! The district is one of the better ones in
the state. Yes, we still have our problems but I don't know of a district
that doesn't. There are some great kids here to work with and staff that is
supportive.
PLEASE we are in great need! If you know of anyone or of any sources we
could go to please let me know and I will pass this on!
THANK YOU
Sandy

More about the workshop...
Heroic parents, desperately search for a peer who will accept and play with
their son or daughter with Autism, Aspergers,
PDD and NVLD. They dream that an understanding friend will serve as the crucial
relationship bridge, opening the social world
for their child. Inevitably, they come face-to-face with a sad truth. You
cannot acquire friends as if they were objects or
possessions. And you cannot place a child with severe social deficits in a
normal setting and expect he will understand the
subtle signals of friendship through osmosis.
Until recently, there were few alternatives to the prayers and dreams of
parents and family that somehow, someway, they
would find an alternative to the general medical expectations; that their
child's condition would most likely result in a life apart
from others.
After years of clinical practice, teaching and research, Dr. Steven Gutstein
and Dr. Rachelle Sheely were unwilling to accept
these bleak predictions. They believed that people in the Autism spectrum could
become true partners in authentic relationships.
But, only through an intervention program designed to fit their unique style of
learning. Relationship Development Intervention,
RDI, is the result of their persistent efforts to open the world of joy,
excitement and unity found in authentic relationships, to
persons in the Autism spectrum.* Through RDI, there is a path to
emotionally fulfilling lives for thousands of children,
adolescents and adults facing lonely, isolated
futures.
Dr. Gutstein has described the theory and methods of RDI in his top selling
book, Autism/Aspergers: Solving the Relationship
Puzzle. In the spring of 2002, Jessica Kingsley will publish Dr. Gutstein and
Sheely two-volume collection of over 300 activities
and objectives for relationship development. Parents, educators and
professionals throughout the world will finally have the
tools to design comprehensive relationship programs.
Now, Dr. Steve Gutstein, in cooperation with The Elija Foundation will present
an intensive one day workshop to introduce
you to the Relationship Intervention Program.
*This method also works for others who have neurological disorders that lead
to similar social and emotional deficits.

Do you want to learn how to improve the development of functional language
(including speech, sign, & PECS), reinforce
effectively, strengthen generalization, and improve the overall quality of
your applied behavior analysis (ABA) programming?
This workshop will discuss the ABA approach to teaching verbal behavior (VB) to
students with autism. This application of the
science of behavior is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of VB and the
subsequent work of Drs. Jack Michael, Vincent
Carbone, Mark Sundberg, Jim Partington,et al.
Participants will learn about the basic verbal operants, motivation and its
critical role in teaching, assessment procedures, and
curricular objectives that are essential for success in a student's
educational program. The workshop will address effective
teaching procedures for students with a range of skill repertoires and is for
anyone looking to increase language, whether the
student is nonvocal, has some language, or is nearly
conversational.
The workshop will describe and demonstrate:
· Pairing and establishing operations (EO)
· Errorless learning and teaching, including prompting and
fading procedures
· Assessment / Curriculum development, including the Assessment of Basic
Language & Learning Skills (ABLLS)
· Effective teaching practices to be used in both the natural environment
(NET) and in structured teaching environments
If you have the Sundberg and Partington manual and ABLLS please
bring them with you

Use of language; the word "I"

2007-02-12 13:07:39

We would sincerely appreciate your thoughts and ideas
on the following.
For preschool children, say those between 3 years and
3 1/2 years old, if they initiate speech on their own,
even if it's just to ask for things they want, like a
videotape, etc., and they say "Daddy, may I have the
XYZ (whatever videotape it is that they want at that
point) videotape, please" (which the child has been
taught to say), "Mommy, I want juice, please," "I want
an ice cream," and clap for themselves when they do
something right and say "I got it, yeah!," and say "I
wanna see XYZ" (it's usually two family members that
are mentioned) -- what does this indicate about the
children?
If the children are also very good with counting
numbers, the alphabet, site-reading several words, and
writing a few words, what does this indicate?
We are very concerned that while they learn relatively
quickly and this leads us to believe that they are at
least of average intelligence, that the constant
motion, moving around, fidgetiness, and almost always
walking around in a circle while watching television
(which we try to stop by redirecting or asking to sit
down) will make it very difficult for them to learn in
a structured environment such as school.
Thank you for your input.

with resources for me. Now I have to study which one would suit us
best.
Also, being that I am moving to Montana does any one know of ANYONE out
there I can connect up with for resources? I will be living thirty

Thanks again gang. You all are the best!

VB-Workshop in NY

2007-02-11 14:42:37

Hi Nicole,
Dr Carbone and his program sounds wonderful, I wish I could attend it, but I
live in Africa. I was wondering if you could give me some highlights of the
program as compared to ABA... I have a 3 1/2 year old ASD son, who started to
talk eight months ago, He has no problem asking for his needs, but will use as
little words as possible eventhough his vocab. is well over 1000 words, plus he
falls short on the what, where and how questions. Could you help me out a little
and give me tips on how Dr Carbone would pull this kind of communication. I
don't think I could afford a trip to America.
Thanks for your help,
Nina

VB Workshop in NY

2007-02-10 22:20:33

I have been attending the 3 day workshop with Dr Carbone on Verbal Behavior
For those of you who missed it I HIGHLY recommend attending ny upcoming
workshops that he does have
He is AMAZING. It is a life changing experience (check out drcarbone.net for
workshop scheduals)
And I have learned more (as has my teachers who the WHOLE team is attending)
than I have ever known when it comes to functional language
I am just blown away with the video footage and the misinterpretation that I HAD
as well as I beleive alot of the ABA community is on WHAT ABA is..As well as the
horrible teaching procedures many NY agencies are training our staff in..
If you cant see Dr carbone WHO I HIGHLY RECOMMEND FIRST OFF..
please come to our into workshop on VB (Verbal Behavior) with christina burk.
Our site is
http://www.elija.org
See the EVENTS section
We will also be hosting Dr ccarbones #4 workshop and will hopefully in the near
future (will MAY be as late as NEXT year) to have Dr carbone do a intro on Long
Island
There are parents and professional leaving there in tears as well as STOPPING
their programming in progress.. It is trully overwhelming..as well as MANY
questioning their past, present and future teaching methods.
Dr Carbones workshop is the most comprehensive I have EVER ATTENDED . IT leaves
you EMPOWERED and extremely knowledgable in dealing with unwilling learners and
self stimulatory or task avodant escape beahviors and most importantly teaching
FUNCTIONAL communication (including sign)
IT is unreal..and it has been the BEST 3 days of my ABA life! I have a very
DETAILED OVERALL understanding of ABA and verbal operants than I ever could have
had..
I cannot stress this enough.. I am completley over whelmed.. I thought I knew
everything from past consulatntions as well as all the literature I have read
and heard ob him. (I have been implementing a VB w ithout being at this intro.)
It is NOT the same as to see him in person!
I now have TRUE understanding of WHAT and why I am doing it.. My son HAS been
beneiftting even though I didnt have a complete understanding..
But now more than ever I know I am giving him the BEST that is out there .
Nicole

Verbal Behavior on Tape

2007-02-10 08:23:02

Dear Listmates
Several people have asked about verbal behavior footage on tape. The
Behavior Analysts, Inc. and the STARS school whose co-founders' (Dr. Mark
Sundberg and Dr. James Partington) are the writers of the "ABLLS" and
"Teaching Language and Communication to Children with Autism and other
deveopmental disabilities", whose curriculum and methodology is now
implemented and applied by Drs. Carbone and McGreevey and Christina Burke
and other wonderful Behavior Analysts across the country, have an excellent
video that has been available since last year, you can find more
information on their website http://www.behavioranalysts.com/. The
Behavior Analysts training division also has several wonderful training
tapes, that give many real life examples of various verbal operants. These
training tapes are shown during training workshops at the agency and I
don't know if they're available to public, but you can also get info on
those at the same site, by contacting the training division.
Sincerely
Arzu Forough,
p.s. my son has been a client of BAI since 1/00, and I've been very
impressed by the quality of the services and materials provided by the
training resources at BAI. I've worked with several other Behavior
Analysts and agencies prior and have yet to see this level of quality and
thoroughness.

videos of VB

2007-02-10 03:18:53

sorry for the cross posting..however I noticed alot of VERBAL BEHAVIOR going on
about WHAT VB looks like on tape..
As we all anxiously await a possible series of avb worshops by dr carbone and
his associates, or perhaps christina..
I would very much like to know WHAT it is, IF we WERE to compile PERSONAL
footage from our own programs.
The cost would be NOTHING Or menial (to cover production ,copying tapes and /or
shipping)
Mind you guys, this will be NO steven spielberg or martin scorsase quality OK :)
What is it would you like to see in action?
Of course you would have to understand that these would EXAMPLES of 2 particular
programs not RECIPES for someone to copy and follow exactly with THEIR
children...
.
We would ASSUME most have a basic KNOWLEDGE Of ABA..
We could , PRIOR to showing a clip explain what is going to be seen in the NEXT
segment
We would show examples of eliciting or teaching the verbal operants (tact mand
intraverbal WH or fill in )
as well as those who DO NOT prioritze the verbal operants in their program how
we do intensive teaching time at the table and AWAY from..Like I heard Sunberg
says "There is nothing MAGICAL about a TABLE" As well as Dana Reinecke's talk at
Queens college "Taking the TRIAL out of Dicrete trial teaching" "DTT does not
have to be face to face - knee to knee at a child sized table with proper
posture and hands and feet arranged perfectly on floor and lap".
I am assuming a good way to do it is to break down the different teaching
procedures that we apply.
Perhaps
* WHAT PAIRING looks like with a new teacher (non contingent reinforcement of
course while appropriate)
* What our prompt boards and data materials look like and HOW we utilize
these..as well as how we use this data to steer our sessions and targets and
rates of aqusition
* WHAT it looks like to mix and vary skills as well as difficult and easy trails
and give intermitten reinforcement (using fast past iti's and going with
behavioral momentum)
* Showing what a manding session would look like or how to use the TV or
computer or NET to get tacts and mands (spontaneously)
*What it looks like when our children engage in task avoidant or self
stimulatory behaviors HOW our teachers deal with these circumstances. (competing
reinforcer. establishing and maintaining EO. extinction )
* varying language and conversational tone (sd's)
Would there be anything else you would like to see? SO that you have a better
example of WHAT these teaching procedures look like in actions. I am assuming
THIS is what is confusing to all? Please let me know
AGAIN, understand this would be what OUR programs look like.. examples of
..based on OUR children functioning level (we happen to have Carbone VB
consultants, and I know some use Lovaas , Greer etc)
Perhaps this type of tape will help you in some way.??
If we see enough people would be interested or just want a glimpse of what these
procedures look like for 2 particular children..we will consider "producing"
such a tape..
Let me know
Nicole

Teaching Reading

2007-02-07 20:23:11

I recently started probing one of my students to see what sight words he has.
I initially started out having him match a word to pictures in a field of
three. He had a perfect score. I then had him match picture to word in a
field and he did perfect as well. After the first 50 words, I decided just
to place a field of three in front of him and have him get the word I ask
for. I'm certain to put similarly spelled words in a field so that I know
he's discriminating. Right now, he has about 200 sight words. I'm wondering
now where to go from here. The words I've been probing him on fall into
concrete categories (i.e., foods, vehicles, colors, shapes, numbers, animals,
etc). Should I start working on the Dolch reading list next? This
particular student has limited verbal language due to his apraxia, but has
above average receptive skills. HELP! Thanks so much in advance! If I've
rambled without making myself clear, e-mail me and I'll try to clarify!
Thanks again!

Spelling

2007-02-07 15:19:37

"Lorelie Sindt" <chrislolo@...
<cut for brevity
The problem is spelling. We had his list cut down to 4 words. He will do the
same words for weeks as he cannot get them right on paper. His words right
now are "on, chop, rap, hop".<cut for brevity
sentence that included his beloved trains, he wrote her entire sentence with
all words spelled right.
Just a thought, but why don't you drop spelling lists, and have him write
sentences about his favorite topics. You could have him write, say, three
sentences a day. Then you could analyze the sentences for spelling rules
represented by correctly spelled words and maybe just ask him, e.g.
"If ----- is spelled ------, then how would you spell ______ (another word
using the same rule)." If there are mis-spellings in the sentences, then
you could show him how to spell them correctly, and give him other similar
sentences with the word mis-spelled - his job would be to find the
mis-spelled word and correct it.
I would suggest that writing sentences to contain a given target word is a
much harder linguistic task than writing sentences about something that
interests you. Many of the traditional spelling list activities are
actually quite high-level linguistic challenges. Also, if he can
demonstrate mastery of spelling rules in a way that he finds less difficult,
you are more likely to teach him to enjoy spelling well.
I apologize for rambling -- I should rework this to make it more coherent,
but I'm just too tired.
Lots of luck, and report back on what you do and how it works,
MoSam

Wisconsin residents

2007-02-05 12:22:52

Anyone in Wisconsin have any advice for us on how to appeal an open
enrollment denial from their resident school district? We applied for open
enrollment for our son with PDD to a few excellent nonresident school
districts and our resident school district denied us to go elsewhere due to
"undue financial burden". We know we have 30 days to appeal the denial.
What we need is some help on how to make the appeal a successful appeal.
PLEASE any help you can give is will be deeply appreciated!!!
